Google Desktop 3 criticized

Recommended Posts

Google released the latest version of its desktop search application on Wednesday. It includes an option that allows people who regularly use several computers to search for items stored on multiple computers simultaneously.

ZDNET reports the Electronic Frontier Foundation sounded a warning "EFF urges consumers not to use this feature, because it will make their personal data more vulnerable to subpoenas from the government and possibly private litigants, while providing a convenient one-stop-shop for hackers who've obtained a user's Google password"...

I don't think google's plan is to compete with anyone. I read a Time article on them (and if they could be trusted) and it seems like they just like to do what they do, and to heck with what others are doing. They buy up companies, then let the software go for free, free mail, free IM, etc. It really does seem like they just like doing things that people want to use.
