Hey,

I saw something called a Modem Uncapping kit on some torrent site, was just wondering, would this work or is this liable to screw up my connection/pc?

Cheers,

easily screw up your connection, more likely to screw up your life tho.

"Uncapping is an illegal activity and many internet service providers check modem configuation files nightly to detect uncapped modems. If caught uncappers risk possible account termination and/or prosecution under theft of service laws."

edit: and obviously, anything from an unknown source such as a torrent site could be a virus.

uncapping kits attempt to remove the up/down limit that is stored in your cable modem. Most of these are just viruses/spam/trojans, and if they do work, your isp will eventually notice and probably sue you or charge you for the extra bandwidth. If you want a better connection, pay for it like everyone else.

This is done but "editing" a file hardcoded into a modem. But to do this right, you have to have a Linux box and a TFTP setup. It is aggressively being suggested to you that you don't try and mess with this. The config file in the modems being altered in anyway will trigger an alarm. There are people who work in survellience dept. at ISP's and use Engress and Egress filters, needless to say, they can view EVERYTHING from their console.

Hmm, I wonder how I know this...

    • Most of what you asked was in the article, what do you get for wasting my time? This is a “deal”’article, not a review of the machine.
