LOL @ Blue Dragon

poor Microsoft, they know it's impossible win console wars without win in Japan.

Yeah, it's terrible that Blue Dragon came in at #4 with 80,000 copies sold, even though there aren't even 200,000 Xbox 360s in Japan.

The funny thing is that your beloved PS3, with it's larger installed base in Japan, doesn't have any games that came close to selling that much in a week. I'm not even sure that any titles have sold 80,000 copies overall yet...

(I have nothing against the PS3, personally. It just feels like we have a new "Apple Fanboy" in the making here.)

it only costs 70 less in the states so it's really a fair comparison to make. Technically they really are two different types of machines that can't be fairly compared on a technical level, however since they are in the same price league it wouldn't be unfair to make a sales comparison.

1) They arent different generations of consoles, they both come out in 2004 within a month of each other, they are both relatively the same generation, the PS2 and 360 arent.

2) The PSP and a game is ?150 where i live, and the DS is ?125-130 with a game where i live.

Go preach your Sony loving crap elsewhere.

The PSP was $250 for the longest time while the DS was $150, a $100 difference. Technology-wise they are not one generation apart, the PSP is equivalent to the PS2 and the DS the N64, that is two generations difference. A console is a console, both are making profits for their respective companies, you should be able to compare anything that is sold, no matter how old they are apart.
Go preach your Sony loving crap elsewhere.
Seriously grow up or go to a different forum, no one will miss you if you do.

80,000 copies is bad for an RPG in Japan considering Japan's biggest RPGs sell in the millions launch week then die off the following weeks. BD will pretty much be a blip on the radar next week or the following week and will probably sell as much as the medicore RPGs in Japan.

There are no good games out in Japan for the PS3, pretty much all of them are ****ty games rushed for launch, hence the reason none have sold well. Wait until a game like VF5 that usually sells well or something along those lines comes out that people would actually want. Edited by Flux Capacitor

The PS3 have been out for just one month with limited supply and a lot of crap games. Of course that you wont find a game that sold more than 80,000 copies.

I think Blue Dragon didn't do that bad but you will see that the Xbox 360 will sell better in the next 2 or 3 weeks but again will start selling 1,000 per week. If people dont find interesting the games on a console I dont think they will buy it for just 1 game.

The difference is that there is no installed base for the 360 there. When the high-selling RPGs are released in Japan there are several million people that own the console already.

Also, this RPG is new IP as well as its company's first released game. Even though there are some big names behind the game, you couldn't expect it to sell as many copies as Square-Enix's most popular games even if this title was released on the PS2.

Yeah, I know. I just put that in there because the other guy was pointing and laughing at Blue Dragon as if it's doing worse than the best PS3 games - in a place where the Xbox brand has no traction.

Even with the limited supply, the PS3 userbase is still bigger than the 360's. There are more people to sell the games to. That being said, I definitely understand why games sales are low. See what I wrote above your quote. ^

The 360 definitely needs and handful of highly-rated games if they want a significant number of hardware sales. If not, I hope they at least send the few they get to the US. :)

That is no excuse though. Those games just don't get purchased by the current user base alone, they add more to user base significantly and by significant I mean in the hundreds of thousands. If you look at the sales charts when games like FFX on the PS2 or FFIII on the DS, the PS2 and DS hardware sales spiked into the hundreds of thousands.

There are new IP RPGs all the time released in Japan that sell way more then 80,000.

And there is the other problem that selling 80,000 might not even cover the development costs, which is not encouraging for future games. There was some article that stated a ridiculously high number of FFXIII copies in the hundreds of thousands or even million are going to need to be sold just in order to cover SE operating costs. I would expect the same for a similar next gen RPGs like Blue Dragon to cost in the same ballpark.

Both of those platforms had plenty of other popular games to play once a person finished the RPG they bought it for. Right now, a lot of people are probably worried about their 360s collecting dust if they go ahead and purchase it solely for Blue Dragon.

Yep, on systems with a userbase or at least a proven company behind it.

That is very true and could pose a problem. Though, Microsoft is publishing this title and doesn't seem to mind throwing money away - especially in Japan. As long as they can keep Japanese developers aboard and bring some of these titles overseas I'll be happy. I don't need an overwhelming amount of JRPG's - just enough to give me a variety of games to choose from.

Japan's market sure is weird.

But you can't just compare the PS2 to the 360 since it costs a lot less.

Yet we compare the PSP to the DS and the DS costs alot less....

You took that sentence out of context. I said you can't just compare the PS2 to the 360, because then you're not factoring in the Xbox - which is the direct competitior to the PS2. I stand by my argument that PS2+PS3 versus Xbox+Xbox360 is an interesting number to look at.

PSP versus NDS is completely different. There is no "lower tier" or previous-gen PSP to include in the mix. The only offering Sony has is the PSP.

I hope, for your sake, that you understood what I was getting at and are just being your usual difficult self, jmole.

Is Wii still sold out there?.. nobody is going to buy Wii games if they cant even get a Wii... but then again, Wii Sports made the list :o

I'd say that it sells out every shipment. But as you said, both Wii Play and Wii Sports made the list and are selling a fair bit higher than Zelda.

In the US, the attach rate for Zelda is around 85%, while in Japan it's around 35%. Blue Dragon has an attach rate of around 40%.

I hope, for your sake, that you understood what I was getting at and are just being your usual difficult self, jmole.

:o I should have guessed. ;)

I was wondering just how long it would be before somebody figured that out. He may have changed the name but he is still the same jmole.

The Japanese see Microsoft's logo on the box and they shun it. The fact that Blue Dragon sold so well for being Microsoft-published is a good sign. Maybe the Japanese will finally start accepting American products and not considering them to be the devil. :p

I dont think it will keep sellin g like that week. This was because of Blue Dragon. They will have to release games like Blue Dragon to keep those numbers. My prediction is that you'll see the numbers back to 1,000 - 2,000 in like 3 weeks.

I'm just glad Nintendo is back in the race and even though Microsoft isn't selling that well in Japan, it's worldwide sales are more than enough to keep it in front.

So basically, all this means is more and more competition. All we need now is for Sony to stop ****ing things up and we should have the best generation of gaming to date.

    • Waymo recalls self-driving software after cars enter closed freeway work zones by Paul Hill Waymo, the self-driving car maker owned by Alphabet – the parent company of Google –, has recalled some of its fifth-generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS). It did so after some of its cars drove through closed construction zones. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles were capable of driving through a closed freeway construction zone and continuing to drive at speed. The listing on the NHTSA website says that Waymo is currently developing a solution to fix this issue, but in the meantime, freeway driving is being restricted. Waymo will update its ADS software so that vehicles can detect when they can avoid entering construction zones. According to the Safety Recall Report, on April 20, 2026, Waymo’s Field Safety Committee began meetings reviewing an event from April 11, 2026, and five events from April 19, 2026, where Waymo’s autonomous vehicles didn’t recognize and drove past ramp closure signs into the pre-planned freeway construction zones. This took place in Phoenix, Arizona. Separately, on May 18, 2026, seven Waymo vehicles entered freeway lanes with active construction in the San Francisco Bay Area by driving between cones that were placed to show the lane was closed. On the back of both of these events, Waymo restricted freeway driving until it could address the issue. In June, Waymo’s Safety Board reviewed the issue and additional information related to ADS performances around construction zones; then, as a result, it decided to conduct a recall. This development is not good for Waymo as it adds to a growing list of technical hiccups its cars have experienced. Ultimately, it will lead to more scrutiny from lawmakers around the world who will be more cautious about letting autonomous vehicles on their roads without tighter regulation. For readers in areas where Waymo operates, does this news make you more wary about stepping into one of these vehicles?
