PS3 tops Wii in Japan... AGAIN

Thursday 22-Nov-2007 11:16 AM

Sony comes out on top for a second week running

It came as quite a surprise when sales figures released last week revealed that PS3 had outsold Wii in Nintendo-crazed Japan, and it's gone and done it again.

Figures for the week ending November 18 places the PS3 almost 20,000 units ahead of Wii, with PS3 selling 53,000 consoles, Wii shifting 36,000. This is despite the fact that Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles released last week and entered the software charts and number two, with 105,000 sales.

DS still tops the hardware list, with 81,000, boosted slightly by the release of Mario Party DS which topped the software charts with 115,000 sales. PSP's return to form is ongoing, as Sony manages to flog 66,000 of those.

Xbox 360 expectedly struggled to pass the 5,000 mark, which put it behind even the PS2, which managed 8,800 sales, according to the figures compiled by Japanese magazine publisher, Enterbrain (via Famitsu).

Sony boss, Howard Stringer, said recently that PS3's recent fortune "was planned by the PlayStation group."

Well planned.

Mario parties in Japan

by Rob Purchese

Mario Party DS has danced its way to the top of the Japanese charts by flogging more than 116,000 copies, GamesIndustry.biz reports.

Sales numbers from Media Create pitched its closest competitor as Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, which managed an esteemed 83,000.

Below that was Dynasty Warriors 6 in third, while new entries Pro Baseball Family Stadium DS and Game Center CX: Arino's Challenge for fourth and fifth respectively.

One surprise, however, was that much-hyped first-party romp Heavenly Sword - only released on 15th November - sold just 15,000 copies. This landed it in seventh, a mere two places and 2000 sales ahead of old-timer Wii Sports in ninth.

The top ten for Japan is as follows:

Mario Party DS (DS)

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (Wii)

Shin Sangoku Musou 5 (PS3)

Pro Baseball Family Stadium DS (DS)

Game Center CX: Arino's Challenge (DS)

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

Heavenly Sword (PS3)

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (DS)

Wii Sports (Wii)

Armored Soldiers: Votoms (PS2)

I'd take Famitsus numbers to be closer to the truth at this point. And if this is so, than it's pretty different as the gap between the Wii and PS3 is small. Which shows that the PS3 is once again falling down off of it's highes. at 39,178 this week, I'd guess that next week we'll see it at the lower 30's if not under 30k even.

I'm a bit suprised the 360 went up to 6,525 from it's low 5k last week. Though it doesn't look like much if MS can keep the 360 above 5k per week that'd be something in my book.

Famitsu's numbers are the ones that have the PS3 higher. The lower ones are M-Create (which is what this thread is based on).

The 360 went up to 7k now. This is interesting, maybe it's building up for LO? That's my hope anyways. And the Wii is back over the PS3, so all is well with the world. heh

    • Are they marketed as an entry into astronomy or astrophotography? I do astrophotography. With big rigs, lots of computers, cables and headaches. I love it. And by learning this ridiculously complex hobby, I’ve learned about the objects I’m shooting. Astronomy followed from photography.
    • Microsoft confirms Recycle Bin bug across all versions of Windows by Usama Jawad A couple of days ago, we reported that the latest Patch Tuesday update has seemingly resulted in a lot of issues for many users, including OneDrive and Dropbox access problems, BitLocker recovery lockouts, and BSODs. Although Microsoft is yet to acknowledge these bugs, it has confirmed another, relatively smaller issue across all supported versions of Windows. In an update on its Windows Release Health Dashboard, Microsoft has confirmed that after installing June's Patch Tuesday update (KB5094126), you'll experience unexpected behavior when leveraging Recycle Bin. Basically, when you attempt to delete an item from the Recycle Bin, the confirm dialog will show you the internal file name of that content rather than the actual name. For example, the file may be named abc.png, but the confirm dialog will ask if you're sure that you want to permanently delete $Rxxxxx.png from the Recycle Bin. This is pretty much it for the scope of the bug itself; it just displays the wrong name in the confirm dialog. The correct name will be shown in the list view of the Recycle Bin and if you restore the file, it will return with the correct name as well. This issue affects pretty much all supported versions of Windows client and server, including: Client: Windows 11, version 26H1; Windows 11, version 25H2; Windows 11, version 24H2; Windows 11, version 23H2; Windows 10, version 22H2; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 Server: Windows Server 2025; Windows Server 2022; Windows Server 2019; Windows Server 2016; Windows Server 2012 R2; Windows Server 2012 As things currently stand, Microsoft is working on a concrete solution that will be released in a "future" Windows update. It remains to be seen if the firm will wait till the next Patch Tuesday or roll out an out-of-band (OOB) fix. The good news is that commercial customers can deploy a workaround right now, but they will have to reach out to Microsoft Support for Business for additional details.
    • They said by this time everyone will have flying cars. WELL...
    • A study by physicist Henry Tye of Cornell University suggests that the universe may not expand forever. Instead, it could eventually stop expanding, begin contracting and end in a "Big Crunch" roughly 20 billion years from now. Maybe not as we now know that time can flow backwards.
    • Of course. Simply reverse the polarity.
