"Dell has two problems, it is approaching stagnancy in their main markets, and is about as exciting as an American cheese on white bread sandwich. Michael Dell's fairly desperate PR raising attempt at every CES keynote shows it wants to look 'cool' but can't, no matter how hard it tries. That is why an acquisition or 12 makes sense, lord knows it has the cash."

Here is the key thing to remember. The story was posted by "The Inquirer" I wouldnt read there stories with a microscope. hmm I dont think (I wouldnt touch there stories with a 20 foot pole) didnt translate to well.

They shouldnt be trusted.

If Dell did buy Alienware, they would wreck the brand I think. Image wouldnt be boosted in anyone's mind.

I agree now lets go smash a few dells..... :D

That would probaly make them want to buy Alienware evenmore(if what the inquirer reports is true). I do believe that Dell wanted there image improved/boosted is correct.

if this happens, i'll cry.

Me to

perhaps they wouldnt associate the name dell with Alienware and leave it to run as it does (not likely). I duno, if they ran it as a subsidary company then they could make it transparent. Knowing larger companies this wouldnt last long. However the dell name on an alienware system doesnt seem a good idea. they are well renound for home or business pc's, they (Dell) arent particully renound for their gaming systems. Likewise Alienware is known to be a high end gaming brand.

If they mix the brands dell will either have a higher average pc cost (the low end will be there of course but overall their product page will have more expensive machines listed), or alienware will be associated with the cheaper dell pc's.

I live in Australia where I have no access to Alienware but I dont think it would be that great a purchase. It's not like dell cant easily release high end pc's...all it takes is one person to sit down and select some quality components if thats the market they want to enter. If "dell" was too heavily involved in the day to day running of the company they could hurt the brand name, especially since the people who buy alienware are likely to be the very people who would normally avoid using a dell.

to be honist, i wouldnt even think of spending like 50 quid more on a pc just because a case looks good!!!!

I stick the case under the desk and it serves its process fine

You can also get a pc at the same spec for a better price than alienware, there overpriced by miles!

alienware prices are way over inflated if dell buy them they will remove amd and stuff them all full of intel processors and alienwares rep is in the bin :) both companys quite frankly are cool and do alright products but cost way too much for what they offer...

they need to sell more pre-overclocked computers like they are doing with the core duo from 3.5 to 4.2ghz. if they do this for their high end desktop and laptops then people will bound to buy them as they will be faster off the shelf than the other companies. they have to make sure they have same warrenty though.

got an inspiron 1300 myself, ?351 delivered, upgraded it to 1gb ram and 1.6ghz centrino, sold old ram and cpu, so cost me ?400 in total for a really good spec laptop. use ebay when upgrading and selling, 512mb ddr2 costs ?25 or ?100 if you choose it on dell.com!!!

alienwares arent bad, they just expensive, you can customize it more than on dell e.g audigy cards, raid0 setup etc. dell needs to add more options to change components.

I think you have been mis-informed. I live in Australia and Australian's do have access to Alienware.

If you guys think Dell can drop the price of Alienware rigs, maybe a little but not what you guys would want. Do you forget Dell load alot of junk. adware onto there pc's as to pay for some of the production costs.

Why would remove AMD from Alienware. I dont want to start a flamewar but I pretty sure AMD are better are gaming then Intel.

Yeah, If you like big green lump of **** stuck in your room, you must have no taste. But I wouldn't expect an Alienware fanboy to give any other reply.

Ok, I'm not an Alienware fanboy, never owned one, have not intention to.

green Case. Well, buy a system with a different case.

Also, while looks count a little, most of the people on Neowin, including myself look at whats on the inside. Since Alienware produce some of the meanest, gruntworthy machines around, I think you are a little blinded by the fact that you can't look beyond a green case.

Its Not All About The Looks:

?I?ll admit it?I use PCs just to play games and that?s why I bought my first Alienware setup nearly 10 years ago. Its power and speed were just dazzling and the ability to configure the machines specifically for my needs was a Godsend. And as an artist?nothing beats being able to run around in the games pumped up at full resolution and at the highest graphics settings possible. That?s why Alienware rigs continue to be tops in my book.?

Let's not get crazy in here. Alienware systems are a little over the top towards looks and a little strange about the type of parts they use but everyone has their likes and dislikes. I have owned 2 Dells in my life (so far) and have worked on a few Alienware systems. It's not like Kia is buying Lamborghini here, they both build computers that provide a certain level of usability to their respective users. You never know, they might actually make something worth buying from that sort of merger...

cheers, didn't know that (or had never looked as I wouldnt actually buy one)

No problem. If I didnt build my own systems or if a friend wanted to buy a pre-built gaming system I would buy Alienware and would always recommend them over Dell, HP and other cheapo pre-build companys.
