Open AIM is now released.

Wow. I'm REALLY excited about this. The other day I was looking for a reference for making an AIM client for a project I'm about to undertake.

EDIT...

I do have some involvement with the Gaim and AdiumX projects... if I download this, does that mean I am longer permitted to work in those projects because of my knowledge of the API released by AOL? I don't want to get into legal trouble and I don't want to stop working with Gaim and AdiumX. I am not planning on bringing my knowledge of the AIM API into the Gaim and AdiumX projects though... I only want to use it for a small open source AIM-only related project.

As long as you don't use the API in those multi client projects, you should be fine.

ok, but if i made my own client from scratch and distributed it to people, that would be ok, right?

yes, but you do have to apply for a "deploy key" then.

I don't think it will be long before someone gets around the "no multiheaded clients" restriction.....paging maxxus :p

Uh no, they won't. Their developer key/deploy key will simply be blocked and the app will no longer work.

This is good. In theory we could make a whole better IM using the AIM network.

One question that i asked millions of time and will ask again.

Since the AIM network can chat to ICQ network. Does that mean this Open AIM could in someway replace ICQ as well. ( Since ICQ is in desperate need of new Updated and modern client )

anyone on this issues?

i was wondering if anyone has created a custom aim client yet? if so...and if this gets popular, i think someone should open a topic for it, something like the foobar topic, or the miranda topic...

and if there already is a place where i can see the custom aim clients, could someone let me know. because i love testing these things out...

thanks

There is a custom client included in the SDK that is an MFC based c++/ATL application. It is ad free and runs in about 8,000K of memory. The custom client has to be compiled to be used, I did not include the exe in the SDK. You can take that code and make any changes you want to it...go forth and iterate.

It only hurts it if people expect it to suddenly appear in Trillian. We have to be realistic here. I've used Miranda and Trillian and always wind up back at the three first party clients. Some people want the convenience of one app for it all, and that's fine, but they have to expec trade offs just like I trade off the convenience for further functionality.

yeah but when you have friends on more than 1 network, it's crazy to run 3 instant managers

can someone take SULAX's client and compile it to a '.exe' for all of us who know nothing about coding? That would be great...thanks!

so how in the world do i compile the custom client that is included?...... like specific..... please thanks !!

Someone, somewhere, please force all of us into one unified messaging client!

Let's see, we have AOL, ICQ, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo!...I'm sure there's more. SMS, does that count?

Do you not understand the concept of running a business? It would make no sense, in a business sense, for any network provider to endorse a mutli-headed client which promotes use of competing networks.

Let me talk to my Product Manager to make sure its ok if I put it up on my blog. If I can't I will see if one of my buddies will build it and release it.

I haven't acquired the SDK yet, but what environment is it advised that you work with it in? Also, what are the steps for actually building it? Thanks.

I believe from glancing at it C++ and C#. However you could import the DLLs and use VB, so really anything.

im currently in a c++ class.................. would this even be worth looking at for me? (absolute noob at programming here)

Definitely. We have tons of sample code. In fact we have an entire IM application in the SDK that the ui code is open source. Take a look at it...and see if you can get started with the samples. When working in c++ you have to handle some COM stuff, but that is where the sample accsample can come in handy. If you have any questions just PM me...I will help you out, though I don't do homework. ;)

Sweet. I was wondering why you were saying "we" but after looking at your blog.. I understand. Thanks for the input. :)

    • Nice, hope they *finally* fixed the issue with the NTFS driver where the system would completely brick during large file copies using the built in driver. It's been broken for years requiring me to use the older, slower, NTFS-3G FUSE driver.
    • Windows 11 KB5094126 BSODing, freezing, forcing BitLocker lockout, breaks OneDrive, and more by Sayan Sen Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5094126 and KB5093998 last week as the latest Patch Tuesday updates. Following that the company also published the accompanying dynamic updates under KB5094149, KB5095971, and KB5094156. While Microsoft has so far not acknowledged any major problems with the release, some users online are running into problems. These range from OneDrive and Dropbox access issues, BitLocker recovery lockouts, to blue screens and BSODs. The most common one seems to be happening with HP systems wherein affected users say they hit 0xc0430001 BSOD (blue screen of death) error code after the KB5094126 update. We wonder if this could be related to the recent bug we covered on HP devices wherein the ongoing Secure Boot certificate updates are leading to similar issues. While we are not certain, users affected by this issue likely need to ensure that the boot.stl file is included on the installation media (such as a USB installer or ISO), if the above-mentioned dynamic updates are deployed. If this file is missing, computers may fail to boot from the installation media and could display the error 0xc0430001. This STL file is used by Secure Boot to verify that the boot files are trusted, so it must match the same Windows version and system architecture. To ensure the file is included, Microsoft recommends using the Update WinPE script, which automatically updates the image and handles the required files. Alternatively, you can manually copy the boot.stl file from the Windows\Boot\EFI folder on a Windows device and place it in the matching folder on your installation media before deploying the updated image. Aside from blue screening some users also note their systems have been freezing following the update. This could be happening to Lenovo PCs specifically. In the case of the OneDrive and Dropbox access issues, a user figured out that there could be a conflict with UAC. He explained: "Okay, so I did some digging, and in our environment KB5094126 breaks OneDrive and Dropbox in Explorer. I went through all our GPOs and found out that the combination of disabling UAC and having my user being a local admin breaks OneDrive in Explorer. ... If I enable UAC again, then it works, even with KB5094126 still installed." Hopefully, Microsoft will look into these issues. • It is when it's a desktop in my house though for a PC that's lightly used and not really important when it is. If it was a laptop, it would be a different story. The real solution is varied and begins starting at post #22 in that thread.
