New version of starforce...

Good old StarForce, taking away the feeling of guilt that comes from pirating...

lol..nice one.

And for anyone that _might_ be worried in case they have it.

Check this out.

I dunno, seems reasonable to stop the spread of piracy.

What how?!!! you're a coder and that sounds reasonable to you?!

is it reasonable to jeopardize pc's because some stupid piece of code thinks its pirating?!

btw Futuremark are not the ones who discovered but rather members on their forums.

I've found threads about removing starforce, but I assume that once you remove it the game no longer plays?

Also, would it be against Neowin rules to ask for assistance in getting a game to work, without starforce installed?

Like I said, I am not a Pirate, but, I feel that this software causes more harm than anything else. Some of the games on the list I actually like: trackmania, BoA, etc. It just sucks.

Posting that kind of stuff is risky for neowin. I would suggest places more like cdfreaks or daemon tools boards. I'm not going to link to their boards but a simple google search and you can find them.

This kind of protection scheme should be illegal. It is just as bad as a virus IMHO. I still remember the problem I had when I wanted to install Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Wouldn't run because I had virtual drives installed and I need those to mount image for my job. I was lucky though that I was able to get my money back. Trust me, I will never buy a game with that protection sheme EVER again, that's for sure.

I hope Ubisoft won't use this protection again or i'll do my best to convince people in Montreal not to buy there games... even if it's made here.

It's just a total disrespect to the customer...

If Starforce can gain access to Ring0 on Windows, virus writers can reverse engineer the code, learn how to gain access the same way, or even simpler, attack Starforce's code to enable their virus to hitch a ride on the system. In other words, if Starforce can be hacked (which it had many times), then Starforce is a serious backdoor to any system. Don't they have a law against this? Hopefully Vista doesn't allow anything to gain access to Ring0.

Update:

Its been confirmed by futuremark that they have not carried out any investigations into starforce themselves, it appears that the information came from members of futuremarks forums.

    • It is when it's a desktop in my house though for a PC that's lightly used and not really important when it is. If it was a laptop, it would be a different story. The real solution is varied and begins starting at post #22 in that thread.
