GDC 06: Eyes-On Ratchet and Clank PS3 Demo

Ted Price shows us a sneak peek at 2007's hi-res Lombax.

by Jeremy Dunham

March 22, 2006 - Following a rather lengthy "pro PS3" speech given at the tail-end of Phil Harrison's keynote address, Insomniac Games' President Ted Price showed the thousands in attendance a hands-on demo of the game formerly known as I-8 (Resistance: Fall of Man). But just when we thought Ted's time was up, he surprised us all with a trailer for his team's next PS3 project slated for 2007. The project...? Another edition of the popular Ratchet and Clank series (and here we thought the franchise would remain PS2 only).

Though no footage of either Ratchet the Lombax or Clank the robot was shown in the two-minute teaser, plenty of environmental details were. Beginning in a tunnel that opened up into a cityscape, the camera slowly crept forward through the tubing to reveal a heavily-animated metropolis. Flying cars, ships, and other vehicles were literally everywhere -- with familiar Ratchet staples like the air taxi and Gadgetron supply truck soaring through the skies between the everyday transports.

The trailer looked like this, only higher-res and with more stuff.

Once the camera fully removed itself out of the tunnel, it quickly swooped downwards "Fifth Element-style" through a number of multi-level highways speeding past buildings and floating obstacles. After a couple of near-misses with the flying cars, the camera finally settled in a perched position overlooking a walkway. As the viewpoint stopped moving, police sirens started blaring in the background while an army of robotic soldiers began marching in unison down the sidewalk. Halfway through the march, a speeding car zoomed overhead at high velocity while several police cars (no doubt the source of the sirens heard earlier) chased after it. And just to make things clear as the trailer came to an end, a giant blimp with an electric "Ratchet and Clank" logo floated in and out of view as the image faded to black.

Needless to say, the trademark style of Ratchet and Clank made the game immediately obvious to those who had played the franchise once the video first popped up. Then again, we had never seen the franchise quite like this before. Shown in extremely high detail with plenty of animation, Ratchet PS3's city was certainly beautiful. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it was almost the best looking demo of the entire presentation -- second only to The Getaway.

Unfortunately, we're going to have to wait quite awhile longer before we hear anything more on Ratchet and Clank PS3. Given the game's early development time, an expected 2007 appearance, and Resistance's priority on the release schedule, an E3 peek beyond another teaser is highly unlikely. Even so, as big fans of the series here at the office, we'll keep you updated with any developments.
