Using a 21" monitor for a TV: Wise? Unwise?

Recommended Posts

This seems like a pretty cool product (Gateway 21" HDTV-Ready LCD Monitor FPD2185WH):

It has a TV tuner, it's HDTV ready.

It's got all the inputs (VGA analog, DVI, S-Video, Composite, Component).

The monitor specs seem good (1680 x 1050, 8ms response time).

I was figuring on using it as a TV but connecting it to the computer when necessary. In general, I would like to have the flexibility to use it as either. Will I be missing something buying this convergence product?

They have one of these on display at the local Office Depot and I have to say it's a really nice monitor. TV display looks great on it and the high resolution and low response time will make it great for PC gaming. If I had the $ I'd have one for myself.

the lack of speakers built in might be a pain. I know even with my surround sound in my room I still use the built in speakers a lot for general tv watching.

Thanks for making me aware, I didn't really notice that at first.

I have a digital cable box the directs the sound to my stereo system so it should still work out alright.

Hey, the monitor sells for US$600 but C$800. That isn't a fair exchange. A raw currency exchange should mean that it should sell for C$700.

If anyone has alternative sources in Toronto then let me know. I would need a proper retail receipt so I can submit it to my wife's workplace for partial reimbursement.

So, I picked up the monitor and connected it to the cable box via S-Video and I connected my VCR via composite.

I wanted to connect my DVD player via component but I didn't have any cables. For the fun of it, I had a three connector composite cable (white and red audio plus a yellow video cable) and I used it in place of the component cables. It seems to work. I might be losing quality but at least it gets it working in the meanwhile.

Maybe I'll ask my cable company about a HDTV cable box. That would be cool.
