fishrman
Interesting find: I was just going back through Jerry Honeycutt's MS Press "Windows Registry Guide" and found this in the Developing an Answer File section. Same fun run command ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/452199-uninstalling-windows-messenger/#findComment-587413406 Share on other sites

EZRecovery
I just use Shoot the Messenger from Gibson Research, works like a charm, one shot. Just Google it and you'll find it. You are stopping the service, not uninstalling the program from Microsoft. EZRecovery
I tried the RunDll32 command, and it did not work for me. Now, I did a search and I found a Microsoft website that specifies how to disable it from running on a XP-based computer. To turn on the Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run option, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK. 2. In Group Policy, expand Local Computer Policy, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then expand Windows Messenger. 3. Double-click Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run, and then click Enabled. 4. Click OK. 5. On the File menu, click Exit to quit the Group Policy snap-in. war
doesn't work on Home edition fyi Then do it manually using the registry editor. That's all group policy editor does. ;) That is the ONLY way to uninstall it. Only? Um, no. You could do it manually. That is do what the command does, one step at a time. Such as removing registry entries, deleting files and folders, unregistry dlls, etc. Take a look at the inf file. ;) Plus, you could go to the file itself and right click and select remove. lol, yes I am being a smart ass... ;) :woot: Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/452199-uninstalling-windows-messenger/#findComment-587453270 Share on other sites
EZRecovery
doesn't work on Home edition fyi I'm using Professional This is the way I've been doing it. Uninstall MessengerYou have to edit sysoc.inf (located in /WINDOWS/inf). Under [Components] you should see the following line: msmsgs=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7. Take the word 'hide' out of the line, and it should look like this: msmsgs=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7. Exit and save. Go to Add or Remove Programs, and click on Add/Remove Windows Components. There you should now be able to uncheck the MSN Messenger Service, and by clicking Next it will uninstall. Disables the service from starting up and running altogether which is good enough for me ;) As for the thread starter... Your method does NOT uninstall it...
