Vista Build 5365 released too testers on connect

Recommended Posts

Is it possible in this build or expected in future builds to be able to change the taskbar color? I really hate the dark gray, it's very somber looking to me and though in some screen shots from this thread show a lighter color gray I'd like to have the taskbar white like it is with OS X.

The colors of the sidebar, taskbar, window chrome, and start menu are all customizable.

Are there anyone else having an issue with the wireless adaptor?

Could you be less specific please? My Intel Wireless 2915 a/b/g constantly disconnects and reconnects to certain APs. Usually it will eventually stay connected after a minute or so.

Can someone please post a screen shot with the taskbar in a different color, white if possible. I'd love to see what it looks like in a color other than that somber gray/dark gray color.

Yes i definitely do. Vista had drivers for my wireless card as usual and i was off to the fun in notime flat. But i dunno if these drivers are bad or what but i loose connection alot. It's like i have less signal power now compared to when i was in XP. I can't go upstairs in my bedroom without lots of interuptions. now i'm in the kitchen which is closer and it hasn't dropped once.

I stream my music from my media server downstairs.

Another crazy thing, i didn't think this made sense or maybe it's just odd coincidence but everytime someone calls (the house phone) it cuts off. I only have a 900mhz cordless in the house, the rest are cordless so i plugged it out but someone just called and it still cut off while i was typing this, came back like 30 seconds later (my streaming music stopped) My laptop isn't plugged in so i dunno why it would interfere?

I will admit it has been a few builds since I have installed Vista, and this time I finally did an x64, but some apps that previously worked semi well with it, now flip out, but I suspect it may be with the app, and the x86 emulation.

The one application I had the most issues with, would not seem to accept the flag ("name.exe" -flag) that makes it not check hardware but its neither here nor there.

Overall, the UAP seemed more annoying to me, and it seems to now popup giving you a warning that it is about to ask you for permission, so more than one dialog per operation it needs help for (it pops up for EVERYTHING still that envolved a change.)

Had bugs with it telling me I couldnt save changes to existing files (and the account IS admin flagged) even after it asked me for permission.

Another big thing I noticed is, if you turn UAP off, you cannot tell it "I will monitor this myself" like you can for AV/Firewall. That little red X in the bottom of the taskbar is something I like to tell to go away.

I will be happier with Vista when they UAP is worked out, the bloody permissions popup hell reminds me of days before popup blockers. You know they are coming and you dread even using the applications for that reason.

As for its looks, I had to install the XP 64bit driver from nv for graphics because the provided one seems to make it slower overall... So I dont even get the pretty transparency lol.

well for UAP, i turned it off but i don't have the icon in the tray reminiding me all the time that it's not enabled. Granted yeah it doesn't give you the option to say i will monitor it myself but it doesn't annoy. I turned it off and it doesn't bother me at all about anything anymore. (this is with the x86 version tho, not x64)

So far i'm loving it, I've decided to use it as my ONLY OS even tho i have a few wireless hiccups but it just seems an issue with my WLAN card being in low power mode because i'm on batteries. (Damn Centrino card - lol.. i love it tho) I didn't even have the issue with searchindexer.exe always crashing like some people have said.

last build i tested was 5308 which i got rid of it after like 20 mins, now this build is great, and what surprised me the most, is that Media Center is actually working well, TV Tuner (WinTV PVR-150MCE) and all smooth.

Creative X-Fi installed and working nice.

only 2 problems so far, my wireless card only worked on the first boot, and my CPU Usage is going crazy 67-100 % usage on Pentium D 820.

^^ Because THAT'S how you Beta Test. Not. If you want the CPU Usage to stop, cut off the indexing, if you must -- but don't turn off a service just like that. Even if you have the issue with the SearchIndexer.exe crashing, you can get around disabling the service, if you just change the unicode settings to EN-US.

I've send my bug report on it, like many others. And I consider my job done with this bug. I've stoped the service because Vista is not usable. And it SHOULD work with my unicode settings.

By the way, 5365 is now available on MSDN.

Just downloaded it and now installing it... in VMware. I didn't get any errors when I booted from the ISO, the only thing was... it looked awful (see attachment), due to the lack of drivers.

I couldn't upgrade the existing English XP Pro, because I didn't have enough free space (it needs 8 GB for an upgrade!)

I'll try to install it, hopefully without disk.sys-BSOD's (remember 5342, anyone?)

Update: tried installing it, but after the second reboot (Previous Windows / Windows Vista / Setup Rollback) Vista won't boot, it only presents a black screen. Any suggestions?

the build is won't likely to show up on MSDN.. from what i;ve read..

and btw hope my Y2K CRT monitor will eventually work like a charm in this latest build..

as i can't manage to push its refresh rate beyond 70Hz in two previous avalaible vista build before..

Where do you change it then ?

Do we have to go to that Classic Display properties or something like that with a Windows 95 era screen showing Windows 95 style UI bits (icons, text, windows, etc..) ?

I tried on that window to change the color of the active window and it doesn't work.

Other things like Icons size works in a strange way, it seems to never change the size of the icon itself and only change the size of the space outside the icon, weird...

MS started getting rid of these old fashion screens so hopefully they will get rid of that one as well...

Err what ?

That's not good enough for me, this screen only allows to select the shade but once you click the Open Classic Properties then you see a lovely Windows 95 screen with settings that either don't map with the new UI (like top most window) or work in a strange way (icon size).

I really hope MS will change that before final....

Found a bug. Not sure if its been said on here yet.

Go onto My Computer (or any Explorer window). Right click "Documents" in the let pane and click "Create Shortcut". A shortcut of "Documents will appear in the left hand list, but "Common Places" will appear on the desktop. You can't delete or do anything with it.

The only way to get rid of it is to drag the new Documents shortcut from the left hand pane onto the desktop, where it will strangely overwrite "Common Folders" and then you cna delete it.

^^ You can anonymously report bugs through MBC if your so inclined; even if your not a BT. You just won't be able to access feedback etc.

MBC ?

5365 is too unstable for me (crashed a few times at various stages) and Explorer due to the Indexing servicing hanging all the time is quite unusable.

Can't wait for the next official beta release.

One thing I am very happy though is the speed the start menu comes, much faster than in any other Windows version, you click and it's there.

Only downside is for some reasons on my Audigy the "click" sound sometimes happens a second or two later before I actually clicked on the icon, oops :D

    • Nah. They'll milk the current generation in terms of design - controllers, consoles, but no meaningful hardware improvements. This is one reason why people aren't buying Xbox hardware - it's stagnant.
    • Funny, but I didn't had the issue. All PC's at work are Dell and we had the culprit version of Support Assist for about 2 weeks until we got the new one. No problem at all. And for checking you can also use Dell Command Update, no need to search in windows settings. Just check the Upgrade History.
    • YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • Apple are scared of their customers! They have built a brand over the years of "it just works out of the box", but that slows innovation. Samsung's master stroke was the Galaxy Ultra: "Let's cram everything into one handset, make it so stupid only real nerds will love it, some of the features will work, some won't, but the audience will have such a high tolerance they won't care". Apple has no such device and so they are constantly worrying these days about the fallout of creating a new experience that customers might not like. I know it is often cited the reason they don't build a touchscreen Mac Book is they don't want to cannibalise the the iPad market, but I think it's equally cold feet after the criticism Microsoft receive trying to make a touch compatible desktop OS
