Beckinsale not to return for Underworld 3

British actress Kate Beckinsale has been removed from the upcoming sequel 'Underworld 3' after the franchise's writer and director Len Wiseman omitted her character from the script.

Oddly enough, Wiseman is also Beckinsale's real-life hubby and was asked to write a penning to the first two films, which leaves the sultry character of Selena out of the story.

Beckinsale told MTV: "I think it's a prequel before I'm actually in it, so I think that won't include me if it happens."

:( It won't be the same without Kate. But I guess this officially tells us they are going to do a prequel which I personally think is a mistake. But who knows?

I have only seen the first of the two, but the movie was surprisingly better than I expected. Many agree with me. Just because it is not hugely popular does not mean it is not well made.

I have to agree, it is a good action film. Probably better than most action films released in the same year. One thing is bad acting though. The element or realism disappears in thin air, no matter how hard the actors act, and how much they put into their character. There were one or two famous actors added on in the second movie, but still while they did add depth to the overall story, it still didn't make this movie more than it was originally made for... Action.

Removing Kate Beckinsale is a suicidal move for the movie franchise. I mean the only thing that caught my eye when first watching Underworld was this hot babe in a tight fitting leather suit. I think the first one was awesome, mainly because the story was so original (not the same boring vampire story that's been around centuries). The second wasn't so good in my opinion because it didn't seem to have that original story element anymore. Sort of like Saw & Saw II, or actually any other sequel for that matter. Sequels suck because they don't have the ability to surprise us anymore. At least, that's my take on it... I will, however, see the third one when it comes out though. With or without Kate, but she will be missed though.

I thought the story was alright, but it could have been executed so much better than what it was. There was a potential for greatness, but it just turned into the same old vampire action movie in the end.

LEN WISEMAN: The third film is going to be a prequel. It will be the origin story and we find out things we didn't know about Lucian; he'll have a much bigger part in it. It will be about the creation [of the races] and what started the war. It will be a period piece. In terms of the writing, a lot of the writing has been done. We've been developing UNDERWORLD 3 for a while. I won't be directing UNDERWORLD 3; I'm just going to be producing and writing.

iF: Is Kate going to be in it, or is this in the time period before her character?

WISEMAN: It will be in the time period before, but it will overlap into the creation of her as well. We're in the process of seeing how far we go with that.

It is going to be weird him not doing Underworld 3. Hopefully they get someone good to direct it. Otherwise it sounds interesting.
