Are you positive you can't end calls by closing the phone? Maybe that's in one of the settings you havent played around in..

Great review! I wish I could get this phone but I cannot justify spending that much. :(

I haven't messed around with all of the settings, so maybe it is possible. But in other reviews I've read of the phone, they have been pretty consistent in saying that it isn't possible.

Also, the V635 only has 5 MB of internal memory, and can only (seemingly) support up to 256 MB of external memory.

Well, I got a bit more when I deleted the stock wallpapers and ringtones, but I got a 512mb memory card in it, and am currently use it as my backup MP3 player. There's a few out there who reports that you can use a 1gb card on it.

I'm wondering why in the hell would anyone want to spend $700 on a freaking phone... It boggles the mind

In the same way some people spend $100,000 on an Aston Martin when a Toyota will do the same job. You get what you pay for. Some people like having not only a phone, but also a digital camera and a MP3 player all in one device.

I cant believe the prices of phones in the US, I guess that phones are the only things that are cheaper in the UK.

You could get a W810i on contract for ?20 a month, with the phone being free and you get 100 minutes and 100 texts a month. That is on a 12 month contract.

So that works out at about ?240 for a top of the range phone and a load of minutes and texts!

Not to mention that the phone isn't even $700 in the first place. The most expensive I've ever seen it for was $640, which is what I paid. But now I've seen it for as cheap as $520.

It really depends, in the case of my brother, he pays a lot less being Premium client, gets a lot of offers, can deal alot more, etc, at the end, he ends paying from HIS POCKET about 50$ for the last gen Phone, he sold his K750I a while ago, waiting for the K950i :p

Back on topic, i hate this phone... and now that i look at it, looks like an improved version of te W600, but even uglier..., i really hate it...

On the other side, the K950 is a god damn beautiful cellphone, but... 8gb memory stick? 2gb internal? symbian?, im doubting about first and last..., i havent got Nokia because of the Symbian, so it wouldnt be a smart move from SE

What do you hate about it? Just the design? If that's all, I can understand why. This is a form factor that really takes some getting used to. It's not as convenient as your traditional clamshell or candy bar phone, but I think that the swivel form factor makes the phone a bit exclusive-ish.

Nice review. Too bad a phone like this won't come to canada. I have one comment though. Are you sure about the power adapter requiring 220V? My sister has a W800i that we bought from england. It has the standard 3 prong english plug, but the adapter can work on either 110V or 220V. So all that was needed was to wire up a quick adapter. No transformer necessary.

You're correct. It was my mistake. In fact, all that is required is an adapter.
Just wondering...If I'm in Australia..

Am I able to buy this phone then go to a pre-paid mobile dealer (let's say Optus) and purchase a prepaid Sim card (about $100?)

Or do you need a certain uber 3G sim card?

Nope. This is an unlocked GSM phone, so it will work with any GSM provider. Any provider that uses SIM cards is a GSM provider. So yes, this phone will work fine with your Australian provider. The W900i is, however, "3G ready," so if you have a carrier that has a 3G network, get a 3G SIM card and take advantage of it. ;)

Yay, it's unlocked GSM...that's cool..

What I meant before though (and I apologise because it wasn't explained clearly enough) was that if I buy a 3G sim card am I able to purchase that in conjunction with a prepaid plan or are they only available on set monthly plans?

Because honestly I can't trust myself on anything that is not prepaid :pinch:

And often certain phones and sim cards I've realised are tied down to certain types of plans..

And I don't really want to spend all the money buying this phone and then realising I need to pay a monthly fee as well for it..

I've had the W900i for abou three weeks now. In that time, the price has dropped nearly $100, to a near affordable $530. If you are still clamoring for this phone, now is the time. Not only is it cheaper, but it has also been discontinued, with major carriers such as Vodafone dropping support for it entirely.

Discontinued???

Is that a GOOD thing??

Wtf?

So if support has been dropped for it, how are you supposed to use it?

It's not a good thing for SE, but I guess for the people who own it, they own a "collector's item" of sorts. And by discontinued, I think it really means that Vodafone is going to stop selling it, which is currently the only way to get it outside of purchasing it unlocked. The Sony Ericsson website still releases firmware updates for it, as well as the general collection of themes, games, etc.
I'm lost...

The damn phone hasn't even been RELEASED in Australia...And it's already DISCONTINUED ???

Bah..That's crazy

From what I understand, the W900i was never intended to be a mass-market phone. It was an experimental stepping stone of types for SE, seeing how a small graphics card would perform in a jack-knife form factor. I think what we will see in the future is the technology that was used in the W900i placed into other phones. For example, the upcoming K790a/K800i both feature QVGA screens, first seen in the W900i.
Collectors item...means it'll be more expensive.. no.gif

I still reckon it has quite a unique design etc, which I quite liked..

Guess I'll hafta wait for the next phone to come along..

*sob*

Well, I think the S710i is still in production. And there's always a chance SE will make a new jack-knife form factor phone.

    • Not surprising at all. Apple got three months worth of marketing hype with the Macbook Neo's incredible low launch price. They have sowed the idea that the Neo is the best value laptop and that idea will last for years even though the value is no longer there. They do this every five years or so with a single new product that is amazing value which distracts from the rest of their products being horrendously overpriced.
