Macs: Where Everything Costs Money.

Dude, go burn a Mac somewhere, spread the word about how evil Mac OS X is and get of my back for once.

Ignore him, he's just a clueless teenage troll who doesn't have any concepts of real life IT industry - he reads things about some website and then posts flammatory comments based on his 'experiences' (read, what others wrote).

On that note, I use the Mac for interfacing directly with my Solaris and Linux servers on terminal level, majority of my scripts don't need any changes to run on the platform and all the familiar tools are direct ports from DarwinPorts or other 3rd party providers.

Trying to hunt these programs for Windows is a pain in the ass and even when you find them, they're either pale shadows of their original, are restricted by the anemic filesystem and design of the Win32 platform.

As for what terminals apps on Mac , Linux or any other shell can do that Monad can't do.. well it runs on 900kB of memory without .NET or Vista - I'd consider that a bonus if anything.

Thanks, I will. It wasn't exactly the first time this has happened, that's why I became a little bit agitated. So sorry for that. :)

Don't you get ever tired of trolling.. I mean you're not even good at it.

On that note, could everyone on this this report that guys posts so we can get rid of him, it is clear that he is here only to post flammatory posts - isn't that against the rules in the first place?

He asked a valid question which no one chose to, or could, answer. I think others are just as responsible as him for taking this thread OT.

Now let's play nice, hmm?

Oh, I'm sure it can. I'm not bashing functionality. I'm debasing variety.

I do have one question though: How would you organize pictures from two different cameras? For example in windows I just create two different folders, one for each camera, and then upload pictures into their respective folder. How would I go about doing this on the mac? Wouldn't iPhoto pop up automatically syncing both cameras? I want to keep each camera's photos separate.

Make smart albums in iPhoto based on the EXIF data from the cameras.

What's the best CD / DVD burning application?

Is Toast the best? I hate Roxio on Windows. I've always used Nero. Is there a better alternative to Toast?

If you didn't know any better you'd think Toast 7 Titanium and Easy Media Creator 8 were made by two entirely different companies.

Roxio Toast 7 Titanium is the most amazing pice of burning software I've ever seen. There's nothing like it on any OS.

I got my mac!

It is beautiful. Working flawlessly. I have VLC, Adium, and Camino installed right now. Unfortunately, I don't know how to change buddy icons on Adium. Better yet, I'd like to not have a buddy icon. How do I delete mine? It kind of integrated into the system and is using the snapshot I took during setup.

I'm also having trouble connecting to other computers. For example, in Windows I can go to "My Network Places" and view other computers and their shared folders. I can't see other computers in Network on the Macbook. I push Go -> Connect to server and enter "192.168.0.2/SharedDocs" to try to access that folder on another computer but it tells me I can't connect. What's wrong?

Thanks.

Make sure your Macbook is on the same workgroup as your windows computers.

I don't have my Mac in front of me, but if you go to System Preferences and then Sharing, you should be able to find where to change the workgroup. It is here where you can turn on Windows Sharing as well.

In Adium, go into preferences then accounts...you should be able to edit the account and there is a tab somewhere that will let you change the buddy icon.

Glad you enjoy it!

You need to prefix that address with the protocol name, so it should be "smb:\\192.168.0.2", once you authenticate with your Windows username/password, it will give you a list of available shares to mount.

I tried going into preferences, but it has nothing to do with me accessing other computers. It only gives me options about other computers accessing mine. I couldn't find a workgroup thing. I could only change some "xxxxx.local" thing which I changed to "home.local". I also tried putting in "smb:\\" before the ip, but it stil gives me an unable to connect warning.

He got the direction of the slashes wrong. It's "smb://192.168.0.2/SharedDocs"

There's no need to be in the same workgroup because OS X will scan all of them on your network. However, if you wanted to be, that's in the Directory Access program in the Utilities folder. You don't set that in System Preferences. The value you did change in System Preferences is your system name. I don't really know if you want that to be "home" or not. :p

Another way you can do that whole networking is by just using the "Network" area in Finder and clicking on the workgroup of your Windows computer then double clicking the computer. Should prompt you for authentication after that.

Oh My Goodness. You're right. HAHAHA! THANK YOU!

I also popped in 2 GB of Ram today. Man, installing that was difficult. But now, this mac is running beautifully. I've got two windows of Camino running, adium running, and itunes running with no slowdown or heat or whine! I guess I got lucky or just the norm. who knows. I also have another question. How do I control iTunes from the desktop? I see lots of people with their desktop showing coverart with controls next to it. I can't control iTunes when it's sitting in the dock. Is a widget the only way? If so, what's the best widget to display album art and control itunes?

Thanks!

http://www.yellowmug.com/sk4it/ - Control iTunes from keyboard (free)

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ipod...nes/menuet.html - Another keyboard controller (pretty, but not free and I found it buggy)

http://wincent.com/a/products/synergy-classic/ - And another one (I use this one, not free but cheap)

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ipod...controller.html - This one puts controls in the menu bar (free)

Menuet and Synergy also allow you to put basic controls (play, pause, skip) in the menu bar next to the clock so you can use your mouse. Not sure about SizzlingKeys, haven't tried it.

Is it possible to get a widget to stay on the desktop without dashboard running?

// edit

by the way, i decided to use bytecontroller. it's the most unobtrusive.

Yes it is. You could either buy this http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26627 or do this instead, which is free, http://www.askdavetaylor.com/dashboard_wid..._x_desktop.html. I do not know of any free applications but I am sure they exist and maybe someone else could point one out? I don't usually put widgets on my dashboard so I have not bothered to look around for any free applications to do this for me such as what Amnesty does.

I'm currently using ByteController but it doesn't open when iTunes is open. I have to manually open it each time. Is that normal? I'd like for it to open automatically whenever iTunes is open. I have the option "show only when itunes is open" option checked to no avail.

Thanks.

Here's something that's been bothering me. Do Mac users close their programs? When I x out of a program, it still has the arrow underneath the icon on the dock. I presume this means it's still running in the background. In order to quit I have to go up to the taskbar or right click the icon. This leads me to ask the question: do mac users keep programs like itunes, safari, etc. running constantly in the background when not in use?

Squibbles : If you just click the red-x they do not close. You need to close them in the dock or File > Quit AppName or Apple + Q. Otherwise they keep running.

You can see what programs are really running through the process manager (I actually don't have a Mac myself), but I usually just use Apple + Tab (or "something" + Tab).

    • Apple and Tesla trade secrets reportedly exposed following a Tata Electronics cyberattack by Hamid Ganji Image via Depositphotos.com Tata Electronics has confirmed that it detected a cybersecurity incident in some of its systems. The Indian company is a manufacturing partner of both Apple and Tesla, and the incident may have exposed some trade secrets belonging to the two American companies. The World Leaks ransomware group is said to be behind the attack, and it has reportedly posted up to 200,000 files on the dark web, including component designs and specification documents related to Apple and Tesla products. Tata Electronics told Reuters that its response protocols were deployed immediately and that the “incident has had no impact on our operations across businesses, which remain unaffected.” The ransomware group reportedly sent a ransom demand to Tata Electronics, while Apple has launched an investigation into the incident. World Leaks claims it stole more than 200,000 files totaling over 630GB from Tata Electronics. Some database files on the ransomware group’s website are titled "com.apple.factorydata," which could refer to Apple’s iPhone production operations in India. Moreover, some documents reportedly contain material specifications and quality inspection standards for iPhone circuit board components. However, Apple is not the only affected company. A folder found in the World Leaks database is titled "NV36 Chargeport Controller - North America," which may refer to Tesla Model Y components. Additionally, other files in the database reportedly contain drawings related to Tesla’s Project Highland, the internal codename for the EV maker’s updated Model 3 sedan. To support the authenticity of the stolen files, World Leaks has published documents containing footers that read: "This document contains proprietary and confidential information of Apple Inc." and "information contained herein is deemed confidential, proprietary, and a trade secret of Tesla Inc." Cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia told Reuters that the database also contains emails, event logs spanning several years, and passport copies of employees, including foreign nationals. Both Tesla and Apple have declined to comment on the scale of the incident.
