I've been using the nightly Flock builds for quite some time now. It is now my default browser (for the past few weeks at least) and I love it. The first beta has now been released, and if you haven't tried Flock yet, or haven't used it for awhile, I think you may be surprised how good the browser is now.

For those of you who don't know what Flock is, it is a Mozilla/Firefox based browser, with intergrated features such as Flickr and Photobucket support, direct Blog support (Blogger, Drupal, LiveJournal, MoveableType, Typepad and WordPress supported) and backup/share etc your favorites with delicious and Shadows. That's everything I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more :)

They've also as of this new beta release, released a ton of new compatable extensions. I don't want to sound like an ad here, so I'll just leave it at that right now. I highly recommend you try out the new beta, it's very stable, and the intergrated features rock.

Nice, I remember trying the first release of Flock. Whats new in this one?

Everything I listed was either changed or completely redone since then. They've added full bookmark support, previously you had to star pages and use that as favorites. Now you can import your IE/Firefox etc favorites and use them normally. Big plus there if you ask me.

I don't know, there's been a ton of changed to Flock since you used it last. It's been quite a few months ago, I'd suggest just downing it and trying it out. It would be hard for me to explain every change as there has been a ton of them under the hood and even more visually.

trying it out

it looks and feels like firefox with a different skin, sure you can do some different things firefox can't do but for the most part its firefox.

They've done some under the hood stuff that makes it different than Firefox. For example, with 3 tabs open, Firefox on my system is using currently almost 90 megs of memory (ouch). Those same 3 tabs in Flock, 41 megs of memory. Not sure what it is they did, but hey, it works :)

But yes, I suppose it is just Firefox. With a million changes :p

cool, ill check it out, thanks for the heads up LOC :)

EDIT// Great browser, install went well too. Looking forward to the next release(s)

Glad you like it, make sure you check out the extensions also. Normal Firefox extensions won't work...usually. So I'd suggest you check the Flock-converted ones.

And just an FYI for everyone, I've found what looks to be a bug. If you install the FasterFox extension they offer, it pretty much nukes the ability to browse the internet with the browser. Heh, going to post it on their bug forums or submit it to them in a bit. I've confirmed it's Fasterfox, it only happens when it's installed and enabled. If I disable it, everything is fine.

I tried this browser ages ago and its improved so much in the past year ... oh and it renders neowin lightning quick .. much faster than opera :o i was so taken aback by this i switched :D. All i need is a nice simple adblock list filter g-set doesn't work with flock yet.

Hmm... Not bad. I'm typing this message in Flock Beta 1, and I must say I'm impressed. The setup was quick, and now I have one button access to both my Photobucket account and my personal blog. Is this based on the coding of Firefox 1.5? Will most extensions and themes work with Flock?

I'm not sure what code base it uses, I'm sure it is FF 1.5 or later though. And as I said above, most FF extensions will not work with Flock right now. You can try the Flock'd thingy, but it doesn't always work.

How do you import this filter?

Just save the text file to your desktop or wherever. Then using the Adblock-Flock extension, click on "Adblock Options" and in the drop down menu, choose import. Browse to the text file and blamo, there you go. It'll ask if you want to replace or append. Unless you have adblock stuff in, I suggest you replace. Then you should be good to go.

just installed Flock.

using it now.

it looks great.

i hope it catches on with everyone else

i'm going to try the blogging features now.

thanks for the news LOC. :)

Enjoy the ride. Flock is really just put together perfectly if you ask me. It just "feels" right.

And about the blogging, can't beat intergrated Wordpress support. And don't forget, Flock has a deal with Wordpress as it is. Originally, you could only get a Wordpress blog (as a test I think) if you used Flock. But when they opened it up to anyone, man having Flock use it was a stroke of genius. Heh.

Hmm, I don't see much difference in page rendering or page rendering speed. Only difference is the font size.

It's very nice looking, but I don't have much use for the bloging stuff etc.

My only problem with this is that I can't get the top toolbar setup exactly how I want it, like I have it in firefox. I expected it to allow me to do it as it's pretty much firefox. I can't move the bookmark toolbar stuff away from that toolbar and but them to the right on the buttons.

edit: also, it failed at importing my bookmarks properly. Any bookmarks that were in a folder vanished.

edit: also, memory usage on this is incredibly high. 70MB just browsing the forum here, while firefox is at 20MB. 6 tabs on firefox brings it to 40MB.

    • I found that stability back then was really down to the motherboard manufacturer. Back then i stuck with Microstar motherboards and VIA chipsets as they were ultra reliable. Most stuff was done with jumpers and left little room for user created problems 👍
    • Yes, Scoop was created to promote Coreutils for Windows. You can still see early versions of their website on the Web Archive. It was a joke that nobody took seriously. Microsoft's implementation of Coreutils, however, are built in Rust.
    • Looks like EA's Star Wars Zero Company will be out this August by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Over a year ago, EA surprise announced that a team of former Firaxis members is working on a brand-new Star Wars game. Dubbed Zero Company, the title would have XCOM-like turn-based tactics gameplay as players manage a squad of professionals from all over the galaxy. Now, just ahead of an official announcement, it looks like the release date has leaked out. The upcoming Summer Game Fest presentation on Friday is when EA is supposed to show off the title's gameplay footage, with fans also expecting it to reveal a release date. However, the ever-reliable billbil-kun from Dealabs says they have already managed to find out when the game is coming out and what versions fans will have the option of purchasing. Per the leak, Star Wars Zero Company has an August 27, 2026, release date attached to it. The title is slated to release on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 with a $49.99 standard and $59.99 Deluxe edition. The leaker also adds that there won't be any early access perk attached to this special edition. Pre-orders could kick off alongside the official announcement this Friday, too. For those unfamiliar with the title, Bit Reactor is developing Star Wars Zero Company with help from Respawn Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games. The EA-published title is said to be set during the "twilight of the Clone Wars." We will have to wait and see if base building and management mechanics from the XCOM series will be present here, too. "You will step into the shoes of Hawks, a former Republic officer who leads Zero Company — an unconventional outfit of professionals for hire hailing from across the galaxy," reads the game description. "Hawks and Zero Company are recruited for an operation that pits them against an emerging threat that will consume the galaxy if left unchecked. To succeed, Hawks will lead a team of uneasy allies who must set aside their differences to overcome nearly impossible odds." You can catch the Star Wars Zero Company extended gameplay reveal at the Summer Game Fest showcase that's kicking off on Friday at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET.
    • All their other games always had a new cast and new story, so that's not very surprising. The new dev is worrisome though.
