Your fresh news is instantly updated and always handy. New articles appear are bigger to show you what’s important. You can browse from categories for content sources based in different countries. This can be really helpful for those of you who like traveling. If you’re interested in cricket, you won’t have to comb through all the sports articles. We’ll deliver only the stuff related to your favorite sport, based on the sources you’ve selected. You can choose the sources you trust. How does that sound?

Custom ad-blocking list support

We want to pimp your ride with our built-in ad blocker. We’re considering giving you power users the possibility to load your own files in the block-list form. There’ll be an extra button in Preferences, where you can add/remove any extra block-list files you’d like to load.

Other changes

Besides these big changes, we’ also prepared a number of minor fixes and updates, including:

• Prompt on risky downloads: we’ve had a few objections regarding the current implementation of the solution, but we decided to turn it on as it enhances user security, and this advantage prevails over minor nuisances.
• The Windows x64 experimental installer is now fixed and should work correctly.
• The middle-click action on the bookmarks bar folders is also fixed.
• We’ve fixed a minor nuisance related to Google Hangouts not working without the proper plug-in.
• The Bluejeans plug-in should now work seamlessly.
• Last but not least: a few crashes should disappear since we’ve fixed the root causes.

Adblocking updates

• Adblocker now consumes a lot less memory on start (up to 100MB less!)
• Fix: articles not loaded on some sites with adblocker on (e.g. pcworld.com).
• There are also several updates in the UI and exception lists.

• Fix: selecting language in the spellchecker.
• Fix: crashes due to unregistered new permission in extensions.
• Clipboard access in WebUI pages is now correctly applied.
• Fix: unable to close browser while downloading a file.
• Fix: opening of bookmark folder items from the context menu.

• Fix: download resumption not working after restart.
• Personal news:This feature is under heavy development right now, so the #personal-news flag is still disabled by default. The team is working on improvements and adding more cool stuff there. You can enable the feature flag and share your feedback about our tuned news page.

Known issues

We are aware that embedded YouTube videos cannot be played in the fullscreen mode, and are working on the fix.
Also, the Linux users will again have issues with h264 videos. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Opera 38 developer Free VPN integrated in Opera for better online privacy

 

The first major browser maker to integrate an unlimited and free VPN or virtual private network. Now, you don’t have to download VPN extensions or pay for VPN subscriptions to access blocked websites and to shield your browsing when on public Wi-Fi.

Why we are adding free VPN in Opera

Bringing this important privacy improvement marks another step in building a browser that matches up to people’s expectations in 2016. When you think about it, many popular options offered by desktop browsers today were invented (quite frequently by Opera) many years ago. The innovation energy in the industry has been recently so focused on mobile, even if the desktop is still thriving.

In January, we were reviewing our product plans, and we realized that people need new features in order to browse the web efficiently in 2016. It also became apparent to us that what people need are not the same features that were relevant for their browsers ten years ago. This is why we today have more engineers than ever before working on new features for our desktop browser.

So far we have the native ad blocker. And, we’re introducing another major feature in just a matter of a few weeks; a native, unlimited and free VPN client, right inside your browser!

Enhanced privacy online with Opera’s free VPN

According to Global Web Index*, more than half a billion people (24% of the world’s internet population) have tried or are currently using VPN services. According to the research, the primary reasons for people to use a VPN are:

– To access better entertainment content (38%)
– To keep anonymity while browsing (30%)
– To access restricted networks and sites in my country (28%)
– To access restricted sites at work (27%)
– To communicate with friends/family abroad (24%)
– To access restricted news websites in my country (22%)

According to the research, young people are leading the way when it comes to VPN usage, with almost one third of people between 16-34 having used a VPN.

Better than traditional VPNs

Until now, most VPN services and proxy servers have been limited and based on a paid subscription. With a free, unlimited, native VPN that just works out-of-the-box and doesn’t require any subscription, Opera wants to make VPNs available to everyone.

That’s why Opera’s built-in free VPN feature is easy to use. To activate it, Mac users just need to click the Opera menu, select “Preferences” and toggle the feature VPN on, while Windows and Linux users need to go to the “Privacy and Security” section in “Settings” and enable VPN there. A button will appear in the browser address field, from which the user can see and change location (more locations will appear later), check whether their IP is exposed and review statistics for their data used. It’s free and unlimited to use, yet it offers several must-have options available in paid VPNs, such as:

• Hide your IP address – Opera will replace your IP address with a virtual IP address, so it’s harder for sites to track your location and identify your computer. This means you can browse the web more privately.
• Unblocking of firewalls and websites – Many countries, schools and workplaces block video-streaming sites, social networks and other services. By using a VPN you can access your favorite content, no matter where you are.
• Public Wi-Fi security – When you’re surfing the web on public Wi-Fi, intruders can easily sniff data. By using a VPN, you can improve the security of your personal information.

Add your own photo as theme

Some time ago, we introduced the “Create your theme” option in the theme manager. It turned out, though, that the option was not visible enough for users. Now just go to Customize startpage and click ‘+’ button and use your own photos to create a theme.

All extension users will have the extension manager always handy. The extension icon is visible on side panel on the left side of the Speed Dial page.

Support for adding a personal ad blocker list

Our ad blocker now contains support for adding your own block lists. To add your own custom list file, head to Settings and click the ‘Custom Block Lists’ button in the ad-blocking section (note that ‘Show advanced settings’ from the ‘Browser’ panel must be enabled to see the button).
The lists have to be in EasyList-style format, and you can use existing lists such as the EasyList affiliate lists to ensure you get to block all that you want. As a reminder, Opera itself provides a block list based on the publicly available EasyList and EasyPrivacy.

Speed Dial improvements

Did you ever remove your speed dial accidentally? Now you won’t. You’ll notice three little dots on hover in place where close button used to be. It has the same content as context menu, so you can open, edit or remove speed dial.

 

 

the company confirmed  that it is  powered by SurfEasy. Opera told   that it is completely free and not limited in any way. Additionally, no user data logs are being kept by the company.

Configuring the VPN in Opera

The VPN that Opera ships with is not enabled by default. To enable it, do the following:

1. Load opera://settings/ in the web browser's address bar.
2. Switch to privacy & security using the sidebar menu.
3. Scroll down until you find the VPN section.
4. Check the "enable VPN" box.

And that's it. Opera will make use of the VPN from that moment on for all connections the browser makes. This means that your "real" IP address won't be visible anymore to websites (unless they use other means of detection if available), and that your connection is encrypted which prevents eavesdropping.

You can verify that the VPN is working by loading our IP checker using Opera and another browser you have access to. The IP addresses shown to you should be different as Opera uses the VPN while the other browser does not.

The Opera browser displays a VPN icon in the browser's address bar when the virtual private network connection feature has been enabled in the settings.

You can click on the icon to display data transfer stats and switch to another virtual location. The current implementation supports servers in the United States, Canada and Germany.

There is also an option to turn the VPN on or off quickly using the interface. This can be useful if services on the Internet block you from accessing them (..Netflix..) when you are using a VPN or proxy, or when you want to a direct connection to a service.

I'll give it a try. I like some of the things Opera does although who knows how good the vpn actually is.

 

Edit 1: Or not. Downloaded it, installed it, added a few extensions and now I'm encountering an endless crash/load loop. This is new and exciting.
