Need a few graphics done

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Neowin Shift needs some graphics to be done for the next release. Here's what I need:

Grub splash screen (Non-urgent) Grub image format

format: xpm.gz at 640x480x14color

Main boot splash (Urgent, this is the background you see while Shift is loading)

format: jpeg, medium-sized

Here is what I posted, but in more detail.

Thanks guys

For the GRUB splash, most of the logos in this poll would make a great background, once the selection is made.

Is the next release using flux? or xfce? both? I have started a flux style (posted elsewhere) but don't know what the status of flux on this distro is yet...

I have yet to try fluxbox. A morphix developer said that fluxbox was untested and might not be too stable. I'll try it and maybe we can use it for the next release.

Based on what we have so far, the image Phi made is going to be the official logo. I might decide to require a majority, and take the two best logos based on voting, and the winner is the official, but based on current results, we have a winner. The alternative image made by Phi would make a perfect boot screen (NOT grub).

And I'm about to put that logo into the splash screens I made. Those splash screens still need polishing, but they are better than nothing. I'll post them here soon, and then if you could put them in the distro Bulio. Or does XFCE even have splash screens? Anyway, they'll make nice GNOME splashes.

I also have a wallpaper idea, I'll post that here. I can't do the GRUB thing though, since I can't test it (I know, someone working on a Linux distro should be using Linux, but my laptops broken, so sue me).

EDIT:

I have other colors, but I haven't put the new logo in, and since I haven't finished polishing this, I didn't see much point in changing the splashes. Too much work. Plus, the logo isn't even official yet.

I'm going to bed, but I'll start on the wallpaper tomorrow.

Sorry if I seem impatient, I just didn't know what the status was.

Mark,

That looks pretty nice actually for a boot screen!

Here you go:

boot6fs.jpg

Since this logo seems more official. I figured this would be the default logo (as opposed to the Alternative logo Glass made), and the alternative would be in smaller places, since it's flatter.

It's designed as the bootsplash, but could easily be converted into wallpaper as well. I love vectors

Simon, I like the alternate better, with the arrows pointing in, making a more noticeable "S" shape. Any specific reason that one is "official" and the other is "alternate"?
Oh no, another poll! Walls... closing... in... on... me...

I'm giving the current poll another day though, so everyone in the world gets at least 24 hours to vote.

Link mark? I'm mostly an Openbox guy, but I'm always happy to tryout a Neowin Fluxbox theme :)

Edit: 666 Posts

Not sure if it will work in Openbox (does OB support pixmaps?), but here is a tarball of the pixmaps directory

Shift_Blue_pixmaps.tgz.zip (untar to ~/.fluxbox/pixmaps/, so it exists as ~/.fluxbox/pixmaps/Shift_Blue)

Shift_Blue.txt (place as ~/.flluxbox/styles/Shift_Blue)

init_Shift.txt (this is my init file, which should replace your existing ~/.fluxbox/init However, please mv your current init file, so you don't lose your personal preferences when done looking at this draft release of a Shift theme for fluxbox)

Of course, the .zip and .txt extensions had to be added to allow Neowin uploading, and will need to be removed.

Quick screenie showing toolbar and focused/unfocused window decorations:

EDIT: Oh, the "init" file is needed, because I pre-rounded the "O" stick and the "X" close buttons, and if you mix the order around, you get an odd looking window top. And re-added the image, which seems to have broken in my edit.

Hate to say it Simon, but I agree with this opinion.... the alterate is better IMO.

Mark your init file gives an error when trying to d/l it. So far looks nice though. It seems to be working (in fluxbox, I won't even try getting it to run in openbox) without the init file, is it really needed?
The init file sets the button positions. Most users have close as the far right button, so that isn't a problem. Don't know about the "stick" button, though, that is sort of iffy from user to user.

Other than that, the init file has other flux-wide preferences that would likely be different from what I use to what others use (hence my comment about backing up your existing init before using mine).

Thanks, Mark.

That is great!

Thanks, but it isn't really original work. I used some of the background images used for bars on the Neowin site, then just added buttons (the only original works here) to them.

It is meant to be a strawman for others to critique and suggest alternatives; more of a question than an answer.

Not everyone needs/wants an overpriced SUV or pickup truck that is so tall you have to have a step ladder to get in and out of it.

Before, they worshiped at his feet, including a lot of so called hollywood types. Now, because he fell off the plantation truck, they toss him under the bus.
