ATI Tells NVIDIA "Writing is on the Wall"

Recommended Posts

Used both ATI and nVidia for a long time. All those people complaining about how each others cards suck and crashs is fanboyism at best. Ever since the 9xxx series, ATI has been doing very well, and the official drivers were at least half decent. I never had a problem with Nvidia either, but all those Nvidia fanboys are just annoying -- OMG ATI IS TEH SUX THEIR DRIVERS SUXX0RS MY BOXORS I BOUGHT AN ATI CARD IT CRASHS AND BLOWS UP GOES ON FIRE OMG!!! GOT AN NVIDIA IT MUST BE DA BEST BECAUSE ITS AN NNNVIIIDDDIA 6200 NEVER CRASHS ON ME PWNS ATI OUT OF DA WATER AND INTO SPACE OMG!!! NVIDIA ROX ATI GO SUX00R!!!!

I have had three ATI cards (9500 Pro, 9800 Pro and x800xt)and I will say I have never had these driver issues that people are talking about...and I have played HL2 and this is the first time I even heard about that. So I will say that I think ATI makes good cards and the only issues I have had with them were my fault

I put them in my HP which only had 200 watt PSU :) This was before I knew anything about computers and what do you know, once I got them above the recommended wattate (300 for the first two, 350 for x800xt) they run beautifully.

However, I will admit if I was gonna buy a card today, I would definetly get one from Nvidia. They are both winning at the midrange and higher end cards. So I buy based on whats best for the price at the time. Same with how I would buy an Intel Core Duo right now even though I have had nothing but AMD's all my life.

I think the merge was good for ATI, because they just havent been the same since that big delay last year (or was it two years ago?)and I hope AMD will help them up to speed and also this will help AMD catch up with Intel's COre Duo, cuz I must say I was hoping for much more bang out of AM2. SO I think in the long run this will be better for us since it will increase competition. Except I am kinda scared that one of the companies will get killed and go out of business thus getting rid of the competition and charging high prices for a product only they can supply.

On a side note, can someone explain to me what the "writing is on the wall" is? I'm not really gettting it. This just an effort to intimidate Nvidia that they are gonna lose the crown in the future? Not really sure why a new partner (or subordinate) of AMD would want to even say that, considering Nvidia is still a partner. Seems like this would **** of AMD since they will be the owners of ATI but still want a strong relationship with Nvidia

Only if your using linux they suck. ATI loves microsoft and has way better driver support. Even with vista coming up that will be even more aparent.

Even I would have to agree with this...even on the Macintosh, ATI's drivers and utilities are FAR better...hell, NVidia doesnt even provide any software to adjust the settings on their cards on the Mac. You would think they would, considering the fact that they support Linux and their cards have been sold in the highest end Mac's for a long time now...

nVidia won't be defeated easily, I'm sure.

I had one ATi card, and it kept taking me out of games, and displaying a message a long the lines of "The GPU has encountered an error and has been reset". Took it back to the store, changed it for my current nVidia which is still going strong. I'm always very wary of trying a product again, after there has been a fault like that - I would understand if it did it after a year of use or something, but not on something brand new.

You do know that somtimes it is possable to get a bad card, right? Most people RMA and get a new card that normally works the way it is supposed to.

But.... Oh, wait, that's right. ATI is an unbiased source.

I don't get it. It all seems fine to me...

I would love to see an Intel/nVidia partnership though, InVidiatel?

Loads of people in here are arguing about drivers and such and I don't get why.

Yes, but it puts you off a product damn quick when it is the first time you try that product. It was the first ATi card I tried, so I went back to nVidia, which I have never had a problem with.

I've run two ATI cards in the last 4 years, a 9500 Pro and an X850 XT. Both have been great with little to no problems and I've played quite a few games on them, all worked great. Hell the 9500 Pro was the best card I ever had.

Nvidia fans are like zealots, they love to complain about other brands without ever actually giving them a try. But then that doesn't really surprise me considering what kind of people are required to buy into nvidia's constant FUD and bs marketing.

Who really cares? Come on, it's just a piece of board with a chip or two. I've had both Nvidia and ATI and I liked them both. Nvidia is far easier to change settings and ATI hardware runs much smoother. I've never had a problem with an Nvidia driver, but I've had a few performance issues. I've had problems with ATI drivers, but the performance is spot on what I payed for. Overall, they have both done a very good job at what they do, and I hope both continue to perform. I grew up on Nvidia, before that I had an Apple II, so they get the slight nod, but big deal. To leave my two cents for the story though, I'm still waiting to see how AMD is going to regain the crown from the Core 2.

eh whatever, let the war begin. I am no fanboy of either ati or nvidia. I had a 9800pro, now i got a 6800xt. Before that was a FX5200 and before that was radeon 7500. And before that was my voodoo 3, man that was an awesome card. But either way, if this means prices go down like what intel force AMD to do. Then i am all for it

i switched from intel to amd, and will be going to Intel very soon (conroe baby ;)

i switched from ati to nvidia, and will be staying with nvidia for long tme.

mark my works, once the contract between intel and ati ends, intel will drop that crossblow support so fast, atil won't even know what happened.

ati is so far behind in dual GPU market, not to even mention quad

ati is so far behind in dual GPU market, not to even mention quad

And that's a bad thing? As far as I'm concerned dual GPUs are a useless waste of money and always will be as long as new cards with 50% or more performance keep coming out every year. One high end will always be faster than two low or mid range cards for less money and 100% compatibility.

Besides, I prefer ATI as a company; they aren't as hellbent on profit and filled with egotistical assclowns like nvidia.

Like it or not, that's my opinion based on observation.

Fads are fads and that's what SLI is. A useless fad for the stupid to pour their money into.

If you can afford to do it properly, then it would be worth it. For example, if you can afford two 7900 512Mbs and you play games that would benefit from it, then it is probably worth it. If you are going to put together two 6600 128Mbs, then its dumb - for the same money you could get a single card that would perform much better.

say what every you want, I will go enjoy my games at 1920x1080 with 4xAA (or 8XSLI AA) with 16xAF all settings maxed with frame rates above 60.

by the end of the year i'm getting a 30 inch Benq with even higher resolution.

    • Exciting! It’s amazing how hearing Japanese can naturally enhance the perceived quality of any experience or product.
    • Your other comment in another article says otherwise, namely "Microsoft veteran wants to replace every single line of C/C++ code with Rust and AI".
    • Sued and... exonerated. Oh, they learned a lesson alright. They learned that anyone who uses the word "antiturst" in conjunction with "Microsoft" is an idiot, even if that person is Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson. That judge ruined the image of the US justice system. Microsoft Edge has a 5.14% market share. Also, Windows is no longer the #1 OS. None of this constitutes a monopoly. Google Chrome, however, has 70.25% share. Also, Google's Android is the #1 OS. Now that's closer to a monopoly.
