Price Sheet

Intel officially announced its Core 2 Duo microprocessors on Thursday, dubbing the desktop "Conroe" and the mobile "Merom" chips "the best processors in the world". Intel also cut other selected processors by as much as 60 percent.

The Core 2 Duo duo are also expected to receive a more formal welcome later today at Intel's headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif., where OEMs and other launch partners are expected to describe their plans.

Also, has anyone noticed how the 3.8Ghz P4 is still $600? I mean, who'd be dumb enough to buy that?

Some sort of marketing reason, can't remember what though.

I remember back in 1999 or so, when the P3 500Mhz first came out, the were selling PII 450's for something like $300 more then the 500Mhz part or something like that.

If only they'd cut prices on the Pentium Ms so I can upgrade my processor. Sigh.

How do you plan to upgrade to a Pentium M? Car PC? Laptop? I'd be careful because many smaller mobos have very limited acceptance and those that support P3/P4 might not accept a P6 like the Pentium M.

When will these be available for purchase on sites like newegg?

I think this is the point that people are missing. Sure, they "launched" the Core 2 CPUs today, but good luck finding a store selling them. I thought companies learned something from the paper launch garbage of the past.

    • COBOL itself is not the problem. Code that has been bodged and kludged over decades but still somehow runs is probably the sort of Gordian knot that even AI can't necessarily unravel.
    • Nice devices but my Surface Pro 9 got bricked from a Windows Update efter only three years. Never buying a device from MS again.
