IDE and eIDE channels-CDROMs not being recognized.

Recommended Posts

Okay, here's my situation. I got a new motherboard recently and it has one IDE channel and one EIDE channel.

I've tried all kinds of configurations but I cannot seem to get both hard drives and both CD-ROMs to get detected all at the same time. My current configuration is as follows:

On EIDE channel:

Both CD-ROMs

On IDE channel:

Both IDE hard drives

With this configuration, both hard drives work, but neither CD does.

If I put the CD-ROMs on the IDE channel and the hard drives on the EIDE channel I get the "Blue Screen of Death" when I boot up. Don't know why and I can't tell what the error is because it reboots instantly when it comes up.

I did get both CD-ROMs to detect by reversing the layout of the IDE cables so that the end with the SHORTER gap between the connectors was plugged into the motherboard. (Not the "default" set up.) With it like this (both cables reversed). . . I can't remember exactly but it was either both CDROMs and one HD, or both HDs and one CD-ROM. I *believe* it's the latter. Sorry that I can't remember. :)

But anyway. . . does anyone have suggestions as to how I can get them all working?

TIA.

i dont know whats an eide,im guessing its faster then ide? hdd should be on the faster bus. but since you didnt mention any model number, the best bet is to check the manual to see whats the recommended config.

typical things to check are the jumpers, ide & power cables and the bios.

afaik EIDE is only an improved version of IDE, which was needed to support harddisks bigger than 540 MB back in the day. so either your mainboard is very VERY old or you misunderstood something about the IDE ports on your board.

Lol, okay I didn't know that. What led me to believe only one was eIDE was that only one actually *said* eIDE on the mobo, the other just said IDE, nothing to indicate enhanced.

But anyway, my motherboard is. . . (according to Belarc Advisor): ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5LD2-VM Rev 1.xx

If you want to take a look at it. But otherwise, I've tried putting the hard drives on, well, channel that says EIDE and the CDROMs on the channel that just says IDE. And I get the dreaded BSOD every time, but I can't see what the message is because it reboots instantly when it comes up.

    • Since they open sourced the calculator in Win 10/11 it is much better and can do a lot, I love it.
    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
    • Because of the EU (a good thing) newer android devices been getting 5 years worth of security patches. Except some Motorola which found the loop hole, and offer ZERO updates. In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.
