Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 (Nightly) New Icons

I didn't know that Radiant Core (the web design company that is doing the visual refresh) specializes on optimizing Gecko too.

They probably don't, but I've yet to hear a single article promote the new FF in terms of performance. It's all flash and form instead of function. It seems that as the product has gone more mainstream and commercial they've lost sight of the core of their product.

Me neither. That was a blatant rip from Internet Explorer 7 who ripped it blatantly from Opera.

OMG those new icons are really washed out :( Don't like this 'visual refresh' at all. (N)

I personally find having a close icon on each tab is a much better design, but one of the nice things about Firefox is you can change the behavior if you want to. You can set it up like how it was before, with one close icon to the far right of the browser.

GUYS:

The close button on the tabs _is_ a blatant rip off of IE7, but it's not as good. IE7 has INVISIBLE close buttons. Each tab has a close button, but only one close button is visible at once.

To clarify: the 'x' is hidden unless you are on that tab. Much better idea.

With firefox you can change pref to have one tab on the right (old style), close button on each tab, or a close button on the active tab (what your referring to as invisible close buttons).

Just the default is one close on every tab.

No its not, Opera and Safari (iirc) have had close buttons on tabs long before IE7 was out so shush.

A close button on each tab is easier for new users to locate and more intuitive. Firefox has had several changes to make it more consistent with IE7 (like moving the popup bar to the top) as it makes it easier for novice users making the transition from IE.

As for IE7 having a better system... I completely disagree. IE7 is a mess. Tabs get lost, there's very little space for them, there's now several buttons and menus cluttering up the right-hand side of the screen and it's generally a far worse approach than Firefox. I'm glad they're finally adding tabs but they haven't been implemented well.
