Touchscreen iPod coming in November

Recommended Posts

The ipod has 4 buttons, and a scroll. Why would it possibly need a touchscreen.

To get rid of the buttons in order to have a bigger screen. The iPod will be a media player, with better video playback functionality. There is enough money to get in the video downloading business.

If they integrate FlashLite this would be even more awesome. With the touchpad they arent restricted to the 4 button interface. If a new media, game or whatever needs a new interface they just give it to you via a firmware upgrade.

Oh, and ... one more thing. Interfaces like mouse and keyboards as we know them today will soon be obsolete. Having interfaces integrated into the screen, with real time interaction that is the future. (I need a link to this aweosme presentation of the multiple input touchscreen)

Damn, don't jump on gizmodo like that. The touchscreen rumor has been know since february! I remember it because my friend wanted to buy an ipod and I there were already rumors of a new ipod, and he didnt want to make my mistake (I bought colour ipod and 3 weeks later the video one was released).

One thing has been known for some time, and that is that the 5G ipod is NOT the "video ipod" they promised. So that one is next.

It has been romoured also that the ipod wheel will be part of the touchscreen, so there would still be a wheel. They even got some patents for a touchsreen thing like that

the ipod is NOT an mp3 player!

its a multimedia device that plays m4a and m4v which is apple's format for video and audio on the ipod

the reason they called the ipod the ipod is because the always had the intention of having video and audio on their!

nothing will ever be too fancy for the ipod

theirs plans for:

WiFi

Camera

Chat

I couldn't agree more. Kind of like the Nintendo DS to me. They had a good thing going with the Gameboy Advance and Gameboy Advance SP and IMO they ruined the DS by using a pen for most of the controls.

1) Most games don't use the screen.

2) Go play Metroid.

I've noticed with my PSP screen that if you just touch the screen even slightly, it'll leave a thick fingerprint that needs to be wiped off. I may buy a screen protector but I think that might ruin the beauty of the screen, not sure though.

It won't be smart for Apple to introduce a touchscreen interface that uses something like a pen or a stylus, that will be way to different than the traditional iPod interface. But you never know, if anyone can pull it off, it'll be Apple. :)

Why would they patent a nontouch touch screen without any intention in using it? Silly Apple, they don't know what to do, even at the top!

Just because they patented the idea, doesn't mean they actually know how to accomplish the task flawlessly... (oh, and let's wait for the official news)

That sounds really dumb and not needed. The current clickweel works perfectly. Why would you want a touch screen for controlling music? It makes sense with the DS, but this is just stupid. They already scratch up easily enough. How are they going to protect the screen? The DS works because it has a top lid that flips and protects it when not in use. You'd have to be an idiot to spend $300+ on one of these.

If apple could make a new ipod, they could make one thats rectangle. with a huge screen ( no larger the 3.5" ) and a click wheel on the side, if they want to make a "true video ipod"

but no touch screen.

this is just another dumb idea like that kodak camera with wi-fi that includes a touch screen.

It IS an MP3 (AIFF, whatever) player first of all. It was an MP3 player in 2001 and it is still its main function now. It is what it was mode to be, not what it is becoming (quite lame actually).

    • For the purpose that it was built for, it’s a great machine. It’s okay to own multiple machines, it’s okay for machines to be different. If every computer was the same, they’d be boring af.
    • OpenAI is rolling out a major upgrade to ChatGPT memory by Pradeep Viswanathan OpenAI is rolling out a major upgrade to ChatGPT's memory, making the system more capable, current, and scalable across long-term use. Memory allows ChatGPT to remember useful details about users, including their preferences, projects, and constraints. Instead of starting every conversation from scratch, ChatGPT can use this context to provide more relevant responses in future chats. OpenAI first launched saved memories in February 2024. That feature allowed users to explicitly ask ChatGPT to save information into its memory, such as travel plans or writing preferences. However, this system had limits because it depended heavily on users giving clear instructions to remember something. Additionally, saved memories could become stale over time. In April 2025, OpenAI expanded memory by allowing ChatGPT to reference past chat context outside the saved memories list. This was powered by a background process called “dreaming,” which automatically curates memories from chat history. This made ChatGPT better at learning from natural conversation without requiring users to manually save every detail. Today, OpenAI announced a more capable and compute-efficient memory architecture built on top of dreaming. This new system improves ChatGPT’s ability to carry forward useful context, follow user preferences, and remain accurate as time passes. According to OpenAI’s internal evaluations, the new system improves factual recall from 67.9% in 2025 to 82.8% in 2026. Preference adherence improves from 55.3% to 71.3%, while accuracy over time improves from 52.2% to 75.1%. The best part of this new system is a new memory summary page where users can review ChatGPT's memories. Users can even update details, correct information, or give instructions on what topics ChatGPT should bring up and when. This new, improved memory system is available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the US starting today. It will roll out to more countries, as well as Free and Go users, in the coming weeks.
    • I work for a video production company in Australia. The camera operators shoot footage and then pass the SD card over to the editors. Much easier than handing over the entire camera. Plus, on a busy day you can hand off the SD card and then pop another in for the next shoot. Or, you might have used multiple SD cards because you need the extra space for a long shoot. I also use USB cables and wifi for transferring footage, but in many cases an SD card reader is the easiest method.
