Firefox Crop Circle!

Recommended Posts

It was neat how they did this, looks totally cool as well. When i first got told about it "IM" this morning i totally though this was a neowin news item, and so i wrote up a article and submitted it. I may as well post the article in here:

FireFox users take the fox to an all new level

Does the sudden apprence of a firefox symbol in a crop field scare you? Are there aliens at work?

No this shouldn?t scare you, and yes we can promise you that no aliens had a hand in building this. Contrusted by a group of firefox fans and the same team that created the Firefox mural from cornstarch and kool-aid (http://lug.oregonstate.edu/index.php/Projects/Firefox/Firefox_Sidewalk) and also lanched the Firefox Weather Ballon (http://lug.oregonstate.edu/index.php/Projects/Firefox/Firefox_Sky).

The complete project was planned in under 2 weeks and contuscted in under 24 hours, the final diameter of the fox was about 68 meters (220 Feet). The crop circle was constructed in a oat field near Amity, Oregon where the crop circle is completely invisable from the road but unmistakable from the air.

The team of FireFox 12 fans consisted mainly of OSU stundents who carefully stamped down the oats from 3:00pm (1500 Hours) Friday afternoon and went to 2:30am (0230 Hours) the next morning. The group placed the finishing touches on the crop circle from 7:30am till 11am staturday morning.

The idea came from Matt and John (Mozilla video interns) who came up with the idea a few weeks before hand, While bing fuled by the enthusiasm of Asa Dotzler (Mozilla) the crop circle project became within reach.[Links:[/b]b>iImagesu>

No hired professionals, British or otherwise, were involved in the making of this crop circle. We don't need them; we do go to an engineering school after all. :) Just a bunch of college kids with a basic knowledge of geometry. Though it is a nice compliment. :)

Sorry but the photo title in page one crearly disagrees with you.

Professionals from england were paid and flown in to do this, also the farmer was paid. Noting this to try and reduce comments about mad off farmers or stupid fans with too much time on their hands kind of posts.

Except that he made that up.. Take a look at the actual page and write-up. I was there, helping make the crop circle. This is the actual link: http://lug.oregonstate.edu/index.php/Proje.../Firefox_Circle

I'm the Beth that contacted the Alex. This is me: http://lug.oregonstate.edu/gallery/firefox...circle/img_5200

It really wasn't that hard to make, sorry if you can't believe us :)

I remember when the plans first came out that some guys in england were contacted and supposed to be flown iin to do this and were just waiting on a field for it. So this changed? I didn't hear anything about them not doing it, so I figured it was still that guys from england that were paid to do it?

They were originally thinking about flying in professionals from England (they were never contracted, and certainly weren't waiting on standby), but that would have cost about $10,000 PLUS Mozilla was going to have to find a field for them, pay for their flights, and accomodations. They ran into a few OSLUG members (including me) at OSCON 2006, and we got really excited about the project, and it was obvious that we could do it for a tiny fraction of that price. We found a field and secured permission ourselves. Mozilla also appreciated the fact that it would be a grassroots effort. ;) Mozilla paid for the farmers to be compensated, for an hour of helicopter time, and for a bunch of our food. We received no other compensation for this project. The guy with the small airplane is my friend who lived in the dorms with me a few years ago.

If you had read the write-up we did on it, you would see a clear explanation of how we pulled it off and no mention of hiring professionals to do the basic math necessary to accomplish this project. Please don't spread blatantly wrong and misleading information without bothering to check the facts.

    • I agree when are you going to read this (really poor BTW) article? Here is a better article so you actually know what is going on and answers questions you had in other comments --> https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/05/speed-boosting-low-latency-profile-is-one-of-the-improvements-coming-to-windows-11/ It is unclear if one will be able to disable the new profile at this point but I am not seeing any reason why one would.
    • I disagree; they come off very "bitchy" and "whiny". Make a great product and combine that with a great price (free) and people will come over to your side. Or build it and they will come as they say. Constantly trying to get attention by complaining all the time, will turn people off to your product.
    • It use to be a nightmare, with LibreOffice supporting a newer draft ODF standard by default, and Microsoft Office supporting the older non-draft standard. Now that they both support the same version of ODF, they should be interoperable.

With features like HTTPS Everywhere and built-in tracker blocking, Brave keeps your online activities safe from prying eyes. Brave is one of the safest browsers on the market today. It blocks third-party data storage. It protects from browser fingerprinting. And it does all this by default. Speed - Brave is built on Chromium, the same technology that powers Google Chrome, and is optimized for speed, providing a fast and responsive browsing experience. Brave Browser also features Brave Rewards, a system that rewards users with Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) for viewing opt-in ads. This innovative system provides an alternative revenue model for content creators and a way to support the Brave community. SlimBrave Neo takes all the good things about Brave and makes them even better by keeping everything clean, light, and privacy-focused. It removes the extra clutter, turns off features you might not need, and cuts down on anything that could slow you down or collect unnecessary data. Because it relies on simple settings and policies instead of modifying the browser itself, you still get full Brave compatibility—just in a smoother, lighter, and more privacy-friendly package. • Hi. As the title suggests, I can't access the forum on my phone. I'm using Edge on Android and when I try to navigate to the forum I get a "we value your privacy" popup and none of the buttons are clickable. It effectively stonewalls me from reading any forum content.
