Lost - Season Three

Some Finale info from USA Today...

"I'm sorry, because no matter what I do -- you're going to die, Charlie." This proclamation from Desmond earlier this season certainly made it seem as though Dominic Monaghan (Charlie) wouldn't survive "Lost's" third season. And, according to executive producer Damon Lindelof, that is a very real possibility. But the show's resident baddies also better watch their backs. "The finale will culminate in a fairly cool showdown between our survivors and the Others," he says, "and lives will be lost on both sides."

And for those people who like to see cast on set....what about Young Benjamin and Normal Benjamin

Hmmm... you're right of course.

Des has the Scottish accent and stuff, but I could swear someone in the show is Portugese...

Mathias and Henrik, the people from the "Listening Station" at the end of the season 2 are portuguese. Those are the only people on Lost who speak portuguese at the moment.

I guess I'm really different. I like rich character development, so I really like the flashbacks. There's only been one episode that I wish I could forget ever happened, and that of course would be the Nikki/Paulo episode. Other than that, I can't think of one flashback or episode that I really didn't like (oh wait, there was the episode where Sawyer decided to proclaim himself the new sheriff, that episode ticked me off, but other than that I've enjoyed them all).

My only big beef with Lost is the fact that they have created so many different stories that some kind of get pushed to the side or forgotten although (e.g. Sawyer/new sheriff). Or they take forever to answer some of the basic questions. For example, why haven't we returned to the shark or furthermore, why hasn't anyone gotten Danielle to take them to the radio tower yet? After going to the Black Pearl, that would have been my next adventure if the hatch turned out to be nothing (which isn't entirely true, but for the most part it was). I guess some of the things that have happened I would have done differently...

Black Pearl? Someone got Jack Sparrow involved in all of this...

There were quite a few for me. I liked the Nikki/Paulo episode a lot more than I liked the Sheriff one and the season two Charlie centric episode where he was going nuts about Aaron and got punched by Locke; that episode was probably my least favorite because it had a former heroin user who just couldn't come out and say, "I AM NOT USING HEROIN." Instead, he just looked guilty while he was innocent, BAD writing imo.

The Jack tattoo one is a very close second.

Yeah, didn't you know the Black Pearl shows up after the zombie season to rescue the survivors. :p I meant Black Rock.

brazillian!!

i'm portuguese and there's no way that's european portuguese

Yup: "The language spoken at the listening station appears to be Brazilian Portuguese in structure, although the accent and wording were reported by native speakers as very unusual." --Source: Lostpedia

There was always a hint of children with abilities in regards to Walt. When Michael was questioned in season two, one of the questions was, verbatim, "Have you seen Walt in various places on the island?" Syid and Shannon both saw Walt; there were other instances of people alluding to Walt being special in season one, more specifically, his step-dad. So no Heroes crossover :p

Yeah I don't mean we are gonna see Nathan Petrelli fly to the Island to rescue everyone...I meant I feel like alot of programs these days like to use the idea of people with abilities...its just getting over used I feel...

Few things I was thinking about this morning.

What if the others leader was either the controller or actually was the smoke ball?

When Charlie, Kate and Locke went to get the pilot from the plane, the pilot was attacked by either a polar bear or the smoke thing. Ofcourse the pilot is the one person that the others HAD to dispose of quickly.

Also, Ben knew there would be survivors from the crash, most people would expect they'd be dead, but Ben told them to get a list, therefore it is my thinking that he knew the Island protects good people, or people in general, which also ties in with the sperm being stronger and Ethan being stronger (assuming he'd been living there for years, before and after he picked up Juliet.

It's possible that their leader, this Jacob person or whoever is Smokey or whatever is causing the Losties to see people from their past. Seeing as these people have played important roles in their lives if Ben really believes in Jacob then perhaps he is just a vision/manifestation like Jack's father or Yemi.

Which also makes me think. Did Juliet really see her sister in that video or was it another vision thing....

This is the final paragraph in an interview with Lindelof and Kring(Heroes Creator) from the newest issue of Wizard(the comics magazine). This is the only thing having to due with what will happen in the show...everything else was just about writing and the friendship between the two writers.

Wizard: What can you guys tell us about how your shows will wrap up this season?

Lindelof: For us, I will say the construct of Season 3 started with our heroes victimized by this - at the time - unseen, malicious and malevolent force on the

island of these "Other" people. By the end of the season, you will know a lot more about them and what they're doing there and why they've been preying on our guys.

There is going to be an epic confrontation between the two groups - for lack of a better word, a war - and that's where we are heading to in our season finale. Hopefully, people will be more satisfied than they were in previous seasons - there are going to be a lot of answers along the way to the mysteries that people really care about.

I need to point out: just because they were SPEAKING Brazillian doesn't mean they're not PLAYING Portugese.

I speak Arabic - quite fluently too.

"Sayid?" He's Naveed Andrews. A half-Brit half-Desi. Probably never spoke a word of Arabic in his life before joining LOST cast. Yet he's supposed to be the big, bad Iraqi.

That's the one thing I absoloutely hate about LOST. They can't do languages. AT ALL.

24 does a decent job (though Nadia in CTU is Mexican and can't string together two Arabic words if her life depended on it - but damn, she looks Middle Eastern to me!) MOST of the "terrorists" speak something that can be understood as Arabic and is more or less gramatically correct, even if in a very bad accent. Some of the baddies have pretty good Arabic accents too.

Just like Jack's tattoo being in one language and LOST producers pretending its in another, an actor speaking a dialect of a language when the producers meant for him to be speaking another isn't so far off.

It's sad. All the special effects, all the good acting, all the talent WASTED by making just about any international dialog look totally wrong and fake - like a badly translated movie from the 20s.

Thank God they got lucky with Sun and Jin - they speak Korean just fine - or so my friend tells me. But why can't they have the rest speak the right language the right way?

Either pick a character that can speak the language, or with today's technology have the player mouth it while someone that REALLY knows the language does the real talking - I know it's possible.

    • That lens of history will burn if you hold it at the right angle... Warn users too late: Shame, Microsoft! That extremely minor update to an obscure Control Panel widget required 2 years of warning. Warn users too early: Shame, Microsoft! We've got better things to do. Pipeline and process be damned, we'll just always be disappointed, eh?
    • Microsoft Paint used to be my favorite Windows app as a kid, and it's still pretty good by Usama Jawad I have been using Windows since the early 2000s, when I was around 10 years old or so. I vaguely remember playing around with Windows 98 and Windows 2000, but that may have been on school PCs which had old operating systems installed. My main OS on the home PC, and the one I recall spending most time with, was Windows XP. At that time, I used the home PC to create Word and PowerPoint documents for school, but a lot of the time, I simply used it to play games. My dad would bring game discs which we would try and install on the PC, sometimes unsuccessfully, and sometimes, we would rely on flash games in the browser, like Bubble Trouble on Miniclip. However, the problem with the latter approach was the internet speed. On a good day, our dial-up internet would offer us speeds of 56 kbps, but on most days, it was closer to 33 kbps. This did not facilitate online gaming as I would often have to wait minutes for a game to load or "draw" on the screen, and trying to download pirated games wasn't simple either. I remember getting tired of waiting for online games to load and just downloading simulator games from the Big Fish Games website instead, only to be disappointed after finding out that I was just being given access to trial versions of the title, and I needed to fork out money to pay for the full version. All of this is to say that it wasn't very easy to find entertainment options on the home PC when I was a kid, due to a number of reasons, mostly outside of my control. This situation pushed me towards a rather unconventional ally: Microsoft Paint. Whenever the internet wasn't working as good as I expected, I would simply spin up Paint and draw complete rubbish on the canvas. Of course, that wasn't always the intention, but it usually happened when I messed up drawing a straight line or something, and then I would give up on that particular piece and simply draw a random collection of objects. Microsoft Paint was extremely accessible and easy to use. Even if you weren't an artist, you could quickly understand the tools at your disposal and how to leverage them on a canvas. The absolute breadth on offer ensured that each painting was truly unique, as you could utilize various combinations of tools like the pencil, paint, spray paint, and more to truly personalize your creation. Since I wasn't particularly good at drawing both on digital screen or a physical screen, I remember that my main style of art would be to insert a bunch of randomly intersecting lines and then fill them with random colors through the paint can. I have trying to replicate that art style in the latest version of Paint below, and as you can see, it's truly Pablo Picasso-esque. The human imagination truly knows no bounds Microsoft Paint kept me occupied for hours and was my best friend when video games on the home PC were inaccessible for one reason or the other. There was no academic or professional reason for which I would need to use Paint, but I still loved using it in my personal time, even if what I created wasn't worth being shown to anyone. It was simply fun. Fast-forward to today, and the situation is mostly the same. Now that I am almost 29 years old, and I still have no reason to use Microsoft Paint in a professional capacity. In fact, I don't even use it in a personal capacity, except to dabble with it from time to time, just to see if core functionalities are still intact. And I'm happy to say that I think Microsoft Paint still offers the same accessibility and inviting experience that it did to me a couple of decades ago, even though its UX has been refreshed and it's been integrated with Copilot features. Interestingly, things could have been a lot different, had Microsoft had its way. Microsoft Paint was marked for deprecation with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update in 2017, and even began displaying a product retirement alert, urging customers to shift to Paint 3D instead. Fortunately, after consumer backlash, Microsoft reversed course on this decision, and Paint continues to be a native app inside Windows installations that can also be updated quite frequently through the Microsoft Store. Instead, Paint 3D ended up on the chopping block, which is for the better, I think. I have intermittently played around with Microsoft's refreshed Paint experience in the past few years, and I do think it has received worthwhile upgrades. the UI and the UX has been modernized while retaining core functionality, and the app is still fairly easy to use. It doesn't meet any of my use-cases, but I've never really had any use-cases ever, as described previously. Of course, the elephant in the room is the Copilot integration. Personally, I believe that this is one place where Copilot does make sense, environmental concerns aside. I know that a lot of creatives use AI to generate images, and while some may be using professional alternatives, Paint still offers a decent casual experience, with the power of Copilot. Of course, you do need to have a valid Microsoft 365 Copilot license and available credits to use it, but even if you don't, you still get the big Copilot button in the toolbar, unfortunately. All in all, I am glad that Microsoft Paint continues to be a native feature in Windows 11, and a piece of software that has evolved to meet modern needs without cutting off its own roots. It's just an iconic piece of Windows history that was an essential part of my childhood, and while I don't use it anymore, I'm just glad it is still there.
