YESSSS! New MacBook + iPod

Recommended Posts

I bought a 12" iBook last September and loved every second of using it for almost a year. However, when the new MacBook came out, I started drooling for it of course. The drooling continued for about 5 months. :D Then, I decided to sell the iBook on ebay. When I bought it last September, the only upgraded I did was the RAM. I put in 512mb more to make 1 gig. With taxes, and the student discount (without the ipod though), it came out to about $1,140.00. I sold the iBook (I think very fairly) for $700 the first day!

So yesterday I put in the order for the new MacBook  . As I was goin through the ordering process, I decided to also order a 30gig white iPod with the macbook. I figured I might as well do it since it would come out to about 100 dollars with the rebate. I think before I was the only person around here without an iPod. Anyways, the macbook I ordered is the 2.0Ghz model with the SuperDrive. The only I upgrade I did was the 80 gig hard drive. I already bought the wireless mighty mouse (:woot:) and the 1 gig ram from newegg (2x :woot: ) which are patiently waiting for the macbook. Oh and btw, Windows is dead to me.

Question though. I read in a thread earlier that it is not advisable to put in different DIMMs in the two slots in the macbook. So should I leave one 256mb DIMM in the macbook and put in a 1gig DIMM as well when it arrives? Or should I just put in the 1 gig and that's it? Thanks.

Here's something you'd be interested in.

Apple unable to meet rising MacBook demand

Apple Computer is once again facing a problem that it has become all too familiar with -- not enough supply of its most popular products to meet growing demand.

In particular, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company this month is reportedly struggling to fill orders for its consumer-oriented MacBook notebooks, which are arguably its most popular new product of the year.

Weighing on the Mac maker is the back-to-school shopping bonanza, a potentially lucrative period each year in which student buyers willingly plunk down chunks of cash for the latest computer systems before the start of fall classes.

This year, Apple's MacBooks are being billed as a hot ticket, but the company (or one of its component suppliers) has seemingly underestimated demand. Many customers who were expecting to receive previously-placed orders for the 13-inch Intel notebooks by this week got something else instead -- an apology letter from Apple stating that it would be unable to fill orders within the timeframe it had promised.

"I ordered a MacBook over the weekend," said one customer. "The order was to be processed in 5-8 days. I just got an apology letter from Apple saying they would not be able to meet that order fulfillment deadline."

It's unclear how far back the MacBook backlog stretches, but customers who custom-configured their systems with added memory and hard drive space are reporting delays up to two weeks from when they first placed their orders.

"I ordered a MacBook a week ago with a promise of shipping within 24 hours. The ship date was then set for yesterday (8/21)," another customer said. "I have now recieved notice that my computer won't ship until a week from today (8/29)."

The insufficient supply of MacBooks is not necessarily a new problem. During a recent conference call, Apple executives said that despite shipping as many units as it could during the spring, the company still exited its June quarter with backlog. However, they anticipated reaching a supply and demand balance on the notebooks by the end of September.

In general, sales of Apple's notebook computers have been on the up and up this year, with the company's share of the US notebook marketing doubling to 12 percent during the six-month period ending June. Though it did not fulfill all of its notebook orders during its most recent quarter, they company still shipped a record 800,000 units.

In an attempt to form a long-term solution to its notebook supply difficulties, the Mac maker has been scouring the far east for a third manufacturing partner to compliment current partners, Asustek and Quanta. With insiders believing Apple holds the potential to sell upwards of 1 million notebook systems during its December holiday quarter, the company will surely need the added help.

It won't do any harm in putting different sizes of RAM in your MB. For example, a 1GB and 256MB stick. The main advantage in having two RAM sticks that are identical in size, (1GB/1GB fo example) is that memory performance with increase due to that fact the RAM will operate in dual-channel mode. This will only work if both RAM sticks are matched pairs though.

All in all. Unless you are doing very RAM and CPU intensive tasks you probably won't notice the difference. If you have a 1GB and a 256MB stick, put them both in and you'll be fine.

placed order yesterday night, order confirmed and dispatched today expected to arrive before 29th.

I would have waited until january or some other update but my computer just crapped out on me!

I dont think they have supply problems at all...

Are you sure about that? I think what they mean is that its expected to SHIP before the 29th, not arrive before the 29th. Then again maybe stock in the UK is much less in demand than it is here.

I'm going to be purchasing a macbook in the near future as well, maybe a macbook pro if I can afford it. We'll see. But, I will be ditching Windows soon enough ;) I'm excited.

Congrats on your purchase. Hope you don't get dinged by the delay I've been hearing about.

Same here, I want to ditch Windows so bad. But my budget made buy a Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505 for now.

It's a good laptop to be honest, but I really want to convert to a Mac and specifically a MacBook Pro since it has a X1600.
