You do realise that Apple recycled a lot of icons from Mac OS 1 through to Mac OS 9.2 right?

Apple had redone the whole interface for Mac OS X because they had scrapped the whole code base from Mac OS 9.2 and started on a clean slate, and moved to a Unix-based OS. Since they had to recompile everything anyway, they had the chance to refresh everything. Unlike Microsoft who are only modifying their previous versions of Windows.

Well technically they could have reused the old icons but part of OS X was a completely redesigned GUI. It was easy to do that since they were basically creating a whole new operating system. The similarities between classic and OS X really stop after the Apple in the top left hand corner, lol. Its that different, but if they wanted to they could have reused old icons. But that would have negated the purpose of creating a totally new GUI. But enough about Apple, lol.

Well I'll be honest, I haven't tried a build since 4074 (those were the days :D) but this looks pretty good. Flip 3D has that nice subtle curve which makes it look a bit more fluid, and while I can't stand the premise and principle behind windows, at least MS is making it look really good. Overall though it isn't a total redesign and restructuring of the basic windows concept, it seems to me anyways that Vista is shaping up to be a nice OS.

Installation seemed pretty quick and easy compared to beta2. Memory can still be refined ( hopefully they do that in RC1).

Took the drivers for my nVidia gfx, sound ( which wasnt the case in beta2 ). I cant seem to get my network working on my Intel Pro 10/100 Lan Card.

Cant get Firefox to work ( crashes on me ). Windows Live Messenger works fine.

Daemon tools wont work :( will try the latest 4.0.3 ( I tried the 4.0 )

GUI seems OKAY. They can do a better job with Icons!!!! ( Hopefully before RTM )

Waiting for a new driver from nvidia for this build / or for coming RC1. Hopefully someone can find a working fix for the lan driver.

~No thats just an awful computer

Now that wasn't nice, I have a 5 in a half year old computer, and its a pentium 4 1.70 ghz processor, 512 megabytes of ram, nd a nVidia Geforce FX 5600 (i upgraded it with all my money, it had a nVidia Geforce 2 MX 400)...

a few more questions:

- did the WMP team finally update *any* of the ancient WMP6 visualizations?

- are there still 2 MediaCenter UI's present? ie. the new dark blue Vista style and the old MCE2005 blue?

PS: here we go again with legacy stuff and it should become quite clear now to those who think I am nitpicking that there is far more of this around than an icon here, an icon there... IMHO this is exactly what's wrong with MS...

whats the memory usage like now?

700/900MB Idle.....(I have 3gb)

Media Center doesn't seem to be as stable in this build so far as it was in 5472... Sound randomly loops or crashes. Which is a shame because I want to move to Vista's media center full time, its just so much better... I'll post here if I can fix it

That said this build does "feel" more complete than previous builds, Many icon's have been changed.

It installed it under an hour which is great considering I'm not even using my fast hard disk to test it on

I still don't understand why it is people go for Ultimate and not one of the other versions?

Exactly, Ultimate has got much of the business functionality which many people will not use. When shopping for operating systems, the more you have isn't necessarily the best approach. If you don't require many of the features in Ultimate, why consume resources for no reason? You will end up disabling many processes which you paid for anyways....

Athlon64 3200+, 1G memory, 7600GT

Could my pc fully run Vista?

Of course you can, some days ago I installed the build 5472 in a AthlonXP 2.5ghz, with 256MB of RAM and a PCI 4MB video card!, slow but usable, The amazing thing of this is that the same installation was running in the same configuration but with a different motherboard, after I changed the motherboards by a fault in the first board, Vista runs perfectly! XP didn't start after the change. So, I must supose this is a pro in Vista.

Right now I'm downloading the Pre-RC1 but the server is sloooow, 20-30kbps

Excuse me while I rant.

- Install time, roughly 40 minutes. Not 20 like most people are claiming, my PC isn't cutting edge anymore though.

- General install, really patchy, different reboots into different setups (full colour, partial colour, blackness), seemed messy.

- First start up, again messy. A lot of stuff was obviously being prepared in the background, I was just faced with a frozen screen, would've been nice to know whats going on.

- IE7 looks Horrible, black, despite using Vista frost for my glass.

- General interface, a few clean ups here and there but still messy, Ill post a screenshot of little things that bug me.

- General programs - meh. Messenger cant come installed which sucks, Windows Mail is absolutely crap compared to Live Mail Desktop. WMP is no different. Photo gallery is freaking awesome.

- Flip3D looks slicker now

As were getting close to the release candidate, sometime in september, Ive really realised that Windows isnt going to look all that great. After that Aero Diomand discussion and revolutionary desktop change, we've ended up with another, just ok, looking version of windows.

Maybe Ive tested too many Vista builds now but not alot is changing. Vista is definitely a nice replacement to XP but its not a big leap and its really disappointing they cant build the Live programs directly into it.

Some afterthoughts...

- Why the hell is backup my PC one of the first programs to run and get pushed in Vista? I JUST INSTALLED , I HAVE NO FILES TO BACKUP (maybe I misunderstood?)

- Where has the little program that installs hardware without a drivers gone to? IT WAS USEFUL.

- Will Paint ever get an update? Just bundle in Paint.Net, screw the lawsuits.

Look at this. How can a company spend 5billion dollars on research and development and yet most of the programs have a different coloured header? WHERES THE CONSISTENCY. Whoever decided on that VILE blue for Windows Mail is either coloured blind or sick, plain up sick.

Maybe its because I do web design for a living, but wtf is going on here. I can see what they've tried to accomplish but its just thrown around and horrible.

BUT, for all my bitching, its really stable and definitely something you could use full time with more driver and program support. Its a good replacement to XP, it just isn't going to be an amazing step.

its out in torrents!!!!i downloading now!!!

I seem to remember getting 40% on my warning bar for saying this very sentence a few months ago..... :shifty:

Oh well.......I guess it only applies to some in here.......

In actual fact four months I've been hoping they had something up their sleeves, I am starting to realise this is all they have. Yes I think it is a great improvement and I am looking forward to upgrading and yes I do class it as an upgrade. But, yes there is a but. The user interface in my opinion it is disappointing I think it is messy I am not saying I could do any better but there is so much talent that can be used by Microsoft that I do believe that Vista will not come up to scratch. I believe the public including myself was expecting something slightly more special in regards to the user interface.

I completely agree with you that it looks messy, inconsistent and above all lacking the ability to customise. You could do more with the user interface in Windows 95 than just changing the tone.

I am enjoying the new icons, the new colour schemes and the transparencies I just wish it would all work seamlessly together because it doesn't at present.

I am also aware there is still time, although that is getting very slim. Perhaps they should have promised more in the way of under the hood programming which in my opinion is great and they have done a great job. But four months we have heard about the new user interface well, I am more excited about office than I am the user interface for windows Vista.

    • Yes, Scoop was created to promote Coreutils for Windows. You can still see early versions of their website on the Web Archive. It was a joke that nobody took seriously. Microsoft's implementation of Coreutils, however, are built in Rust.
    • Looks like EA's Star Wars Zero Company will be out this August by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Over a year ago, EA surprise announced that a team of former Firaxis members is working on a brand-new Star Wars game. Dubbed Zero Company, the title would have XCOM-like turn-based tactics gameplay as players manage a squad of professionals from all over the galaxy. Now, just ahead of an official announcement, it looks like the release date has leaked out. The upcoming Summer Game Fest presentation on Friday is when EA is supposed to show off the title's gameplay footage, with fans also expecting it to reveal a release date. However, the ever-reliable billbil-kun from Dealabs says they have already managed to find out when the game is coming out and what versions fans will have the option of purchasing. Per the leak, Star Wars Zero Company has an August 27, 2026, release date attached to it. The title is slated to release on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 with a $49.99 standard and $59.99 Deluxe edition. The leaker also adds that there won't be any early access perk attached to this special edition. Pre-orders could kick off alongside the official announcement this Friday, too. For those unfamiliar with the title, Bit Reactor is developing Star Wars Zero Company with help from Respawn Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games. The EA-published title is said to be set during the "twilight of the Clone Wars." We will have to wait and see if base building and management mechanics from the XCOM series will be present here, too. "You will step into the shoes of Hawks, a former Republic officer who leads Zero Company — an unconventional outfit of professionals for hire hailing from across the galaxy," reads the game description. "Hawks and Zero Company are recruited for an operation that pits them against an emerging threat that will consume the galaxy if left unchecked. To succeed, Hawks will lead a team of uneasy allies who must set aside their differences to overcome nearly impossible odds." You can catch the Star Wars Zero Company extended gameplay reveal at the Summer Game Fest showcase that's kicking off on Friday at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET.
    • All their other games always had a new cast and new story, so that's not very surprising. The new dev is worrisome though.
    • New dev usually means more trash. I also despise that they censored the 1 remake.
