Annoying Vista Icon Outline

Hey guys I'm not sure if this has been posted here before but i was wonder how to take the stupid outline from the icons off when selected.

I looked through the control panel but didn't find anything i was looking for.

Ya, for an OS in 2006, looks like something from windows 3.1 with the big box around it

it's there for accessibility reasons, if you mean the dotted line around the text.

there should be a option.

yeah i remember having that in OSx but i never really cared much because it was nicely blended in

Send feedback back to microsoft saying there should be a option, if enough people do it, they will change it.

if its enabled w/ wallpapers, it must be in the registry some place.

It's not disabled by turning off the wallpapers. It's there so you can tell which icon is highlighted more easily. If it really bothers you, don't keep icons highlighted on your desktop. :rolleyes:

P.S. how else would you highlight icons if the outline wasn't there?

What really sucks about it is that it reduces the contrast of the icon's text. White text on a light-blue background is hard to see. Another example of MS's poor UI design.

I don't think anyone is so stupid they don't know what icon they are highlighting.

You don't have to use so much color to tell the user what icon you are selecting.

The question isn't really so much as which one you have currently selected as much as when you tab back to it and need to know which icon is selected. The box helps draw your eye to the right icon. If you have a complaint, and you are a beta tester, maybe you should be useful and give feedback. Like:

"Hey Microsoft. It's hard to read the text with the light-blue highlight once you've selected an icon. Your suggestion here. etc etc etc."

Simply just whining is the least helpful thing you can do.

what bulid are you using. The newer bulids have toned it down a bit...

unless you mean when you single click it then yes, it has a bit to munch tones but just hilighting it its fine...

tech dude. im using the new 5728 build.

when i go over it with my mouse without clicking on it it's okay but it still has that nasty looking border around it.

Shut off DWM, select a classic theme, and you'll be back to the same old shading from XP and pre-XP. The problem with XP's (and non DWM Vista's) shading methods is that with certain hue ranges, the colours in the icon turn into apecrap.

I personally prefer this shading pattern over the same colour shifting effect, but that's just me.

I think the effect is much better than the dotted lines. Now, If there was a way to remove the dotted line all together..

P.S. Builds dated 9/25/2006 and later have improved the contrast problem with the white text and light-blue background. It should be significantly easier to read the text now.
