Jericho fans win....

June 6, 2007

To the Fans of Jericho:

Wow!

Over the past few weeks you have put forth an impressive and probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a prime time television series. You got our attention; your emails and collective voice have been heard.

As a result, CBS has ordered seven episodes of ?Jericho? for mid-season next year. In success, there is the potential for more. But, for there to be more ?Jericho,? we will need more viewers.

A loyal and passionate community has clearly formed around the show. But that community needs to grow. It needs to grow on the CBS Television Network, as well as on the many digital platforms where we make the show available.

We will count on you to rally around the show, to recruit new viewers with the same grass-roots energy, intensity and volume you have displayed in recent weeks.

At this time, I cannot tell you the specific date or time period that ?Jericho? will return to our schedule. However, in the interim, we are working on several initiatives to help introduce the show to new audiences. This includes re-broadcasting ?Jericho? on CBS this summer, streaming episodes and clips from these episodes across the CBS Audience Network (online), releasing the first season DVD on September 25 and continuing the story of Jericho in the digital world until the new episodes return. We will let you know specifics when we have them so you can pass them on.

On behalf of everyone at CBS, thank you for expressing your support of ?Jericho? in such an extraordinary manner. Your protest was creative, sustained and very thoughtful and respectful in tone. You made a difference.

Sincerely,

Nina Tassler

President, CBS Entertainment

P.S. Please stop sending us nuts :)

* Confirmed all actors returning and have signed contracts

* They start shooting in 5 weeks as they have set space now

* Jericho will have a summer campaign programming

* DVD Release 9/25

* They will be doing some online things/story maybe similar to LOST experience

* Producers were adamant that a 2 hour movie could not tie up the shows story.

* Thought shows might be Mid-Late October, and run 7 consecutive shows.

* Lots of fans calling in and doing THANK YOU'S to the producers.

Look who that press release is signed by....

... the very same woman I sent an e-mail to a couple of weeks back. Nice to know I had a hand in it and got through to the right person ;)

Yeah tis awesome...whats even more awesome is its 7 and more episodes...if the 7 are watched by alot of people then they get a 23 episode season for 2008...

The good news keeps rolling out of the Jericho camp. Tvguide reported Friday that Jericho could return to the air as early as October depending on how CBS's new shows fare. The info comes directly from Stephen Chbosky who gave an interview to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette earlier the same day and discussed how the new budget constraints might impact the production, as well as whether or not the seven episode run could conceivably leave fans with another cliff hanger, or not.

Interestingly enough, Chbosky had two tidbits of news when it came to the finale for the seven episode run. First off, he promised a grand cliff hangar that fans would go nuts over. (No pun intended.) "You don't have to stretch anything out. It'll be seven episodes with a great cliffhanger at the end." Chbosky told the Post-Gazette.

Of course, he didn't describe the cliff hangar, but at the same time it is a statement that should give Jericho fans pause. The series, after all, still on thin ice. Indications are, however, that CBS may make a decision on more episodes sooner rather than later. In the same interview, Chbosky alluded that they had a plan to end the show during this seven episode arc if need be. "We know how to wrap up the show if we have to, ultimately it will depend when they put us on the schedule, but it could be as early as October and in that case we will have time to wrap it up if necessary."

Aside from a reduction in guest stars and new locations, Chbosky did not indicate much in the way of changes related to the new budget. Since the heart of the show is Jericho itself, this shouldn't be of much concern for fans.

I personally can't wait for the show to return. I agree with what some people say about the beginning of season 1. I was hooked at once but episode 4-10 was a bit predictable. When the show really kicked into high gear was after the incredible stupid hiatus!

From episode 12 and on I couldn't wait for the next episode and after the season finale, when the cancellation was official I was outraged!!

It's nice to see what 20 tons of nuts can do :D

Can't wait for season 2 and I hope everyone will be watching so we get even more episodes after that! :)

Good jobb Jericho Rangers, we have our job cut out for us :)

The way the ended teh season was very ordinary, so I hope they can think up some good storylines for a new season.

They will but what they will do is put in an ending so if its canceled again...then we will know how it ended...

well, I just started watching yesterday, and I have to say I loved every minute of it. why was it canceled in the first place any way?

Because CBS is nuts.

Brief version... Some genius at CBS thought it would be a good idea to change the time slot that Jericho aired in to one that put it up head-to-head with the king of annoying reality shows, American Idol. Ratings dropped, and CBS was like "OMG, Jericho is teh suq!" There is more to it, which involves the useless Nielsen Ratings, but I'll not bore you with that.

well, I just started watching yesterday, and I have to say I loved every minute of it. why was it canceled in the first place any way?

Well as d3bruts1d said it involves many things but I think the thing that hurt it the most was the massive hiatus it suffered for 11 odd weeks over the christmas period...that crippled the program and people generally lost interest...

DVD Box Art for Season 1

4vhlwrk.jpg

A few weeks ago, fans of Jericho (myself included) were able to breathe a sigh of relief when a "nutty" campaign to CBS convinced them to renew the show, and produce a second season for broadcast. At the same time, CBS/Paramount told us that Jericho - The 1st Season would be on DVD on September 25th.

This morning, though, the studio officially posted the release for solicitation to retailers, so the stores (both in your neighborhood, and online) can begin to make plans to stock it on their shelves. The listing showed a new date, however, that was a week later than we were previously told: October 2nd. Other info mentioned a running time of just over 16 hours, which sounds about right for 22 episodes. There's also this description, followed by the never-before-seen box art, featuring the nuclear blast in the distance:

JERICHO is a drama about what happens when a nuclear mushroom cloud suddenly appears on the horizon, plunging the residents of a small, peaceful Kansas town into chaos, leaving them completely isolated and wondering if they're the only Americans left alive. But in this time of crisis, as sensible people become paranoid, personal agendas take over and well-kept secrets threaten to be revealed, some people will find an inner strength they never knew they had and the most unlikely heroes will emerge

  • 4 weeks later...
10:28 am: Nuts! CBS has planted one-pound bags of peanuts on all of our chairs along with "Save Jericho" T-shirts! Nothing like a little swag to brighten my post-Emmy nod doldrums.

10:34 am: The Jericho panel includes stars Skeet Ulrich, Lennie James, Ashley Scott and exec producer Carol Barbee. Got questions? Post 'em below -- and quick!

10:36 am: Announcement! CBS is launching a new effort to give viewers a heads-up via e-mail when Sunday night programming will be delayed due to football overruns. It's called CBS Eye-Lert. Oh, I get it -- Eye-Lert! Clever!

10:45 am: "I don't think any of us thought it would come back when the decision was made [to cancel it], because it only happened one time before," says Barbee, who adds that the Season 2 story will focus solely on the happenings in Jericho. Had there been a full-season pickup, part of the action would've been set in New York.

10:48 am: Skeet says the best way the cast and crew can thank fans for their support is to "continue to make the best show we can make and push the story forward." He's also not ruling out going door-to-door giving out free DVDs.

10:50 am: Due to the limited order, the seven episodes will be "lean and mean," says Barbee. "The stories will focus on just a couple of people. We're arcing out an action story that will have resolution [at the end of the seven episodes]."

10:52 am: It was always the plan that Gerald McRaney's character would die. "It may've happened a little sooner then we had planned," says Barbee, "but that's just where the story was going." They wanted Skeet to step up and be a leader.

10:53 am: "We're ready, willing and able" to continue on beyond the seven episodes should CBS order more, says Barbee.

10:57 am: All of the cliff-hangers from last season "will be paid off" by the end of the season premiere. Episode Two will jump ahead several weeks "after the battle."

10:59 am: The Season Two story will focus primarily on Hawkins and Jake's mission to save the world

11:01 am: Lennie James says the "NUTS" campaign was "incredibly humbling... and gratifying."

11:03 am: Casting scoop: Heather's returning! Barbee confirms that Sprague Hayden will be back for several episodes. Titus Welliver, meanwhile, won't be returning as Col. Hoffman, but a new character is coming in "to fill those shows."

11:15 am: Barbee says the last half of the season "was really the show we always meant to make."

11:17 am: Jericho Season 1 DVD out Oct. 2.

11:19 am: Gaggle stampede! Off to get you some Jake/Heather scoop!

11:25 am: Exclusive Jake/Heather prattle from Barbee: "Heather comes back to town to find Jake and Emily together. And she gets a possible new love interest. But there's still a pull between her and Jake that ends up working into the story."

Yeah as long as you watched Season 1 then Season 2 will start October...

Some More Season 2 Stuff...

* The Cheyenne government’s army breaks up the fighting between Jericho and New Bern, but we can still look forward to some postwar scores being settled secretly.

* Cheyenne will work to bring water and power back to Jericho.

* Titus Welliver, who played Col. Robert Hoffman in the first season finale, was unavailable to reprise the role for the new season.

Esai Morales has joined the cast of the returning Jericho in a recurring role.

The NYPD Blue star - recently seen on the short-lived drama Vanished - will play Colonel Hoffman, a career military officer and Iraq war veteran who has not heard from his wife since the day of the attacks. He will appear in six of the seven episodes ordered for midseason.

Jericho was cancelled by CBS in May but a huge fan revolt prompted the network to re-think and order a second "mini"-season last month.

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
