Strong earthquake rattles Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii (CNN) -- A strong earthquake rumbled underneath the islands of Hawaii on Sunday, the National Earthquake Information Center reported on its Web site.

The quake had a magnitude of 6.3 and was centered 153 miles southeast of Honolulu, the NEIC said.

Bruce Pressgrave of U.S.Geological Survey said preliminary reports indicate the quake was centered along the West coast of the Big Island.

The temblor struck at 7:07 a.m. local time (1:07 p.m. ET) and was measured at a depth of almost 15 miles.

KITV reporter Keoki Kerr in Kaneohe, Hawaii, said he hadn't heard of any serious injuries, although it was difficult to reach people at that time.

Electrical power was out in some parts of the capital city of Oahu, and there were reports of landslides, said Kerr.

Erik von Ancken, a reporter from Orlando, was vacationing in Hawaii with his fiancee.

"My fiancee and I -- we were walking on some of the paths by the ocean. The fish in the pond started jumping. ... The windows on the buildings started to shake," he said. "People started to run for higher ground. ... There was a lot of fear."

Supposedly, I've b een through quite a few but I never felt one ... untill this past Feb. 24 (2006) ... I was at the Rideau Center in Ottawa Ontario ... the mall was just about to close ... I was about to buy an iTunes card (stupid thing to do) when I felt the ENTIRE mall shake. I looked at the clerk and said "there isn't a train station near here or a subwa... no, no there isn't ... that had to be an earthquake!" ... went back to the Radisson and turned on the news, and voila, it was just as I expected - an earthquake.

Just got our power back after 12 freaking hours. Thank you state for using an outdated power grid.

*Joins Synthetic Girl*

Well, atleast no one got hurt. Its finally good to be back with electricity after spending 14+ hours w/out it. Heck, I didn't know what to do with my laptop.

Just got my power back here in Kaneohe. Finally! It was nice w/o electricity for while, but. I slept thrugh it this morning - I thought I was dreaming :D

I couldn't sleep ever since the earthquake shoke me awake. Other local members on other forums report that everything is a-okay.
