AutoPatcher XP October 2006

Recommended Posts

I think there is a bug in October release, you cant save as default (hold shift and hover mouse over modules details).. it always go into module details ...

This feature works in Sept 2006

I think that Sep is 5.1.35, and Oct is 5.1.37. This version appearantly has a bug.

Pardon the total noob questions here but... I always install my updates the same way. I dl them and save them to my desktop, then shut everything down and install from there. I have never had a problem with this. When I tried that with the October 06 XP update, it got about 1/2 way through installing and then Windows just shut down and rebooted. This has never happened before. It has always asked me in the past if I wanted to reboot immediately and then gave me a countdown... So far, I am assuming that it was normal, that it was just designed that way this time, and that the counter telling me when it was going to be finished was just wrong and it finished faster than expected. Even though I am assuming this, however, I would still like some sort of reassurance, if possible. Is this normal or have I done something wrong or is it a problem with the update itself?

Thank you for your patience (If in fact you are patient...) Thank you for helping anyway if you are not... :)

I've had reboots on two machines so far. I had to run Autopatcher again and reselect my preferences again, then it ran through with no problem.

Not sure which module is causing the reboots.

Same here...

Never had such problems.

After the reboots, AP detected what was successfully installed & what was still missing - a few cycles like this, and I completed the whole October update.

This makes a third report of the reboots - could you guys nail that? If there's a log or something that you may need, tell me - I'm currently on my Win2k machine though.

I had the October Update installed on several XP machines and noticed that reboots occur on specific configurations though I have yet to pinpoint the exact cause.

I do agree that IE7 should be included perhaps with the next release.

Let's not force stuff as that onto others, shall we? For that we already got some other MS products... :p

Now if you say that it would only be as an optional update, then I'd keep my mouth shut 'cause we don't really need to use IE to access the 'Net (read, FireFox is already doing my browsing). ;)

On a side note... I expect Gandolas to drop by with good news for us Portuguese users.

If it's on windows update, it should be in autopatcher, and probably in the case of IE it should be selected by default.

Us Fx users can uncheck it, but I think you'll find most security experts will recommend updating even if you use it for nothing besides windows update.

October Dutch released!

I am curious how it decides what items should be installed by default. I think it does a great job but have some registry tweaks I'd like to add which leads me to my real question. Is there a way I could create a text file or something to go along with AutoPatcher that would automatically select certain items? I would like to run this after a fresh format and at that point, I can easily be assured that everything should be the same on the computers. Therefore, a simple way to automatically check certain registry tweak boxes would be great!

Thanks for a great program, too!

Yes, you can create a defaults file. check out this thread for details

Although for us dialup-users, how much more bigger will that make the download. I mean XP updates don't have IE, but Win 2k updates do.

The IE7 installer from the MS website is 14.8MB, I'm not sure how compressed that is, so that size may decrease when it's packaged with APXP.

1st for all connected with this exceptional program.... thanks.

Now for a possible add-on to the next update. There have been isolated reports that the installation of

Crictical security update KB917422 (MS06-051), causing some isolated problems with programs that some people might have to run. Especially, some Electronic Arts games (check their website for updated info) and

some other programs (as listed in Microsoft patch update info to fix it).

Apparently, this is not available via Windows Update... but, only to resolve issues related to specific problems you might have running certain programs?????? So, possibly can be added to the Recommended Updates area, if you are so inclined?

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
    • I wonder if "put it back the way it was for decades" ever crossed their minds? 🤣
    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
