Qatar is one of the leading countries in the development of Solar Energy... so I'm sure that even if this wasn't solar powered, we'd be using much less electricity than an average US city. However if you can find a completely environmentally solution (besides the sarcastic "just don't make an A/C like that") let me know :)

Well as a stop-gap measure they should hold off on cooling a 35km tube in a very hot place, really don't see the point. As i see it a lot of middle-eastern countries are competing with each other to build the tallest, the largest, the longest etc. Seems to me all of these things are just penis extensions.

Well if they do this right and it equates to less cars, thus less nasty gass` then great, hopefully tho they,ll see enough uptake. Also if this is running of a power surplus then thats great aswell.

But well see, it could just be a multi millio dollar screw you thats more show boating than energy efficient

In the Middle East, if you say Emirate you mean part of the United Arab Emirates.

Actually in the middle east an (Emirate) is a piece of land that does not qualify to be an independent country. But it qualifies to have a ruler!

Thats why Qatar always benchmarks itself to cities like Dubai. It will be funny if it started comparing itself to real countries.

I personally think it's a great idea. The heat is unbelievable sometimes. (an amazing 52c this year). So now people will be able to be cooled down without having to stay at home and be able to enjoy the national passtime, chilling by the sea.
