"net Send" Spam!

Question

eaglebtc

I got back to my computer today and found this window on the screen: (see attached picture)

===

Message from STOCKTRACKER to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx on 11/21/2002 10:16:58AM

Check out SMNC stock!

Predicted to be one of the biggest movers this week.

Go to http://www.pinksheets.com and enter SMNC in the quote box.

Congratulations to all that got over 100% return on our last recommendation.

===

This came in the form of a "Messenger Service" notification, which can only be sent using the "NET SEND xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx message" command. This is the ultimate invasion of privacy!! I suspect it came from the mIRC window that was open at the time. Someone could easily have grabbed my IP address from that. How long has this kind of tool been available?

used to get that alot too.. but i turned the service off...

To Turn it off:

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Disable Service "Messenger"

That should do it.. :)

You can also turn on the personal firewall on (winxp only). You could also get a hardware firewall.
