Rainbow Six: Vegas |x360| Early Impressions

Recommended Posts

So I picked up my preorder of Rainbow Six: Vegas earlier today.

I was not even planning on opening it honestly, as I have yet to beat Gears Of War yet and not only that I am still very much amped about GOW's multiplayer and will be for quite sometime to come, but my GF's brother, whom I game online with quite often, called me up shortly after I got home from work, and simply asked me "are you ready to do some R6 CoOp? This game kicks ass!"

I told him no doubt, I would call him in an hour because since all I have played was GOW I wanted to get reacquainted with the controls again, and then we could play.

Create A Character With Vision Camera!!!

The entire next hour I did not even touch the game. Literally all I did for an hour was play around with creating my custom online character using my XBox Live Vision Camera. I can say after playing around with it for so long, that the best time to create a character is during the day, with natural sunlight as the lighting. I had to artificially simulate light as my living room is fairly dark lit only by one floor lamp. So I plugged in another lamp and tried it in several different positions... facing towards me, then away from me, then towards the cieling, then towards the floor... Even without ideal lighting conditions, it is unbelievable how much the face recongintion software works, the character looks EXACTLY like me. It is just slightly washed out because of the image I had to settle for, but it still looks damn good. After playing with it, I know for a fact with better lighting it can look even better. Truly they nailed this whole create a character with the camera feature, it even recreated my beard exactly how it looks. I am thoroughly impressed with the face mapping feature, and look forward to when I can do it during the day so it looks even better than it already does... I also look forward to this being implemented into other games, and now after seeing it in action, I am even more upset that TH Project 8 eliminated the feature.

Onto The Gaming: CoOp & CoOp Only.

After creating myself, I finally played the game, and so far all I have tried is the CoOp mode.

I am just so excited more games are utilizing CoOp, and I can say if this was the only mode they included in the game, I would be completely content and happy just with the CoOp. It was tons of fun, ran smooth as can be, and it was only the two of us. One of his friends already as the game, and one of my friends plans on at least renting it, so I look forward to when there can be 4 of us at once playing CoOp. It is not done as well as Gears Of Wars CoOp, but it is damn close.

On Thursday or Friday when I create my character using natural light, when I am done I will snap a picture of my TV, and if it comes out decent, I will post the shot of me as a character along with a picture of me taken that same day, so everyone can judge for themselves.

Summary (For Now)

From just playing the CoOp, I can say this game has a very bright future and I will be playing the hell out of it. I have not even tried Single Player or regular old Multiplayer, and I am already thoroughly impressed. What surprised me most is I figured after GOW, I would judge every game to it and not enjoy anything else, but that simply is not the case, and I am already glad I made the purchase.

Oh one last thing, I do not think either demo released for this game really truly did it justice.

IMO this is right up there on the top of the list of must have holiday titles.

I will update this thread within the next few days when I do play some SP & MP, but I also look for others to share the opinions and experiences with the game as well.

looks like an awesome game. i loved all the rainbow six games and i'll definitely get this since i enjoyed the demo.

Thanks DirtyLarry, great impressions there, if I do decide to pick it up (need to complete GoW, SC: DA, Saints Row etc, etc) I think this will be the time for me to get the vision Camera.

A question, the create a character with vision camera, is the character used for Single player, CoOp and Multiplayer, or is it only some game modes?

Looks like a great game, I am loving all these great games.

I'll be interested in getting this if it makes it to PC. One question though; are the maps and gameplay more like RvS again (map planning, multiple routes to a location) or like Lockdown (no map planning, one route)?

It's like Lockdown in that case, no planning. Lots of it done on the fly though. Routes are linear until it comes to a room or hostage situation then planning is involved in clearing the room.

My observations are from the demo btw.

No problem. (Y) Create a character is just for CoOp and Multiplayer I believe, not 100% sure but I do not think you can use it in Single Player, which makes sense because then your friends can see you.

As far as the maps, there are several different ways to approach each situation as far as I saw last night from doing the CoOp. We put it on Realistic, and kept dying plenty, so we really had to be strategical with the routes we took, and when one way was not working so well, we switched it up to a completely different approach.

I am loving the new health system in R6, GoW, and CoD3. Health packs always felt like it took away from the immersion for some reason. I'm picking up my pre-order later today so hopefully I'll get some good time in with the game over Thanksgiving with my cousins.

And here's to hoping co-op becomes a staple in all of the future blockbuster titles. Ever since Contra, co-op through an entire game has the been the most fun.

Does R6 Vegas play more like R63 and R63:Black Arrow, or does it play more like R6:Lockdown and R6:Critical Hour. I only ask because Lockdown and Critical hour deterred way to far away from the core style of R6 play. Movement felt off, accuracy was a joke, and the graphics actually worsened. R63 and the expansion Black Arrow where outstanding games though. I enjoyed them alot. Since Lockdown, I have been throughly disaapointed with the series and have always hoped that they would return to the roots. I liked the PEC mode for the most part, but it was the actual core gameplay that has been faulty. Has it been returned or does it still stray from the path?

ehm, this vision camera and RSV 'make-your-own-character' isnt really THAT awesome..

Tony Hawks had it for the PS2 :s

The Tony Hawk create a character, which I played around with my fair share as well, is for all practical purposes a joke compared to this one. So even though you are indeed correct that it is not a new concept so to speak, the implementation of it is without a doubt the best ever done in a video game.

Wish I could answer you, but I have not played Rainbow Six since one of the very early versions, and I cannot even remember which one it was.

I had just played the demo so don't take my word for it, Look's to me just like lockdown and critical hour. Graphic wise there's a lot of improvement, but game play is not like the one on PC (I know it's for console only but new games doesn?t stick to their roots) I don't know if it's a good thing or bad. Since the developers are not the same, the young ones (looking at the developer?s video preview on IGN) are in it for money. :whistle:tle:

this facial recognition SUCKS for me....I'm not bald ffs, I want my hair!

i keep getting "invalid front picture, please take it again"....now im getting "invalid side picture, please take again" and each time i have to wait like 5 damn minutes for it to generate an "invalid" image :/

This thing is killing me, at least I got the achievement for it though, but damn, this is not nearly as cool as I hoped it would be.

    • Steam Next Fest returns with thousands of new demos to try out by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Valve has been routinely kicking off demo festivals on Steam for years now, and the second drop of 2026 has just opened its doors. It's a great opportunity for any PC gamers to find some interesting games before they release. The June edition of Steam Next Fest is a week-long digital festival including gameplay slices from a large number of indie developers, though a few major publishers are involved this time too. Interested players can use the Next Fest hub page's various sorting and filtering options to easily sort through the hordes of demos available. The top buttons offer quick access to separate and important sorting options, including "By Genre, By Theme, By Feature," with each one offering more granular settings when clicked. At the same time, the built-in Steam tags system is also available below every page to discover new games more quickly. As always, logging in will also enable Steam gamers to utilize Valve's recommendation algorithms to find game demos they might like, specifically, depending on their past play and purchase histories. This time there is even a toggle now to swap between getting a random and personalized selection as Valve collects more data on the available demos. The Charts section is where you can find the most popular demos on the platform right now, offering up the most hyped titles in a simple list. Right at the kickoff, Mistfall Hunter, Empulse, Echoes of Aincrad, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Over the Hill, Mortal Shell II, and more are trending. Expect this list to change as the week progresses. This edition of the Steam Next Fest is slated to end on June 22 at 10 AM PT. Valve's latest event is now open, and it can be accessed by going to the dedicated hub page here.
    • I lived and breathed MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger. Going to the mess.be website (still online with no changes since 2013) to download display pictures etc. I was a beta tester for Messenger Plus! and spent quite a lot of time on the MsgPlus! forums (a read-only copy is still online at https://shoutbox.menthix.net) Some old Neowin articles also https://www.neowin.net/news/messenger-plus-350/ good times but how time flies
    • Well i'll look into a docking station if needed and use that.    Normally i don't usually have all the drives connected at once,  usually once a month to sync the latest files, and then they go back in there storage area
