Microsoft's Revamped WGA Puts Burden On Users

Recommended Posts

People who bash the WGA remember:

MS have the right to install any software that helps prevent copyright infringement. It's all in the EULA. So that class lawsuit won't work. The judge will simply throw the Windows EULA at whoever started the suit.

Hence I would do the same if I spent years working on a good operating system only to have it stolen and put out on bittorrent with cracks.

Piracy DOES hurt Microsoft. Remember MS is a huge company and money goes to the department of whichever the money was used to buy for, so if you bought Windows, money would go to the Windows department. Yes, therefore it's MS's but it's used for that department. So if you keep pirating, Windows department won't have enough to keep it going thus the end of Windows would loom.

I spent years working on a good operating system Im sure but microsoft did not create OSX. They created crapy windows, last I heard we still get BLUE SCREEN, and lest not mention SPYWARE, and all that other CRAPPPPP

This kind of report won't help them in thier "fight" against piracy. What a fcking rip off.

Is it any wonder why people used pirate copies when M$ are ripping people off. All the pirates are doing is ripping them off? Those prices are obscene.

"Only" 70% more in the UK? It's even worse in Germany, the German Amazon already released the prices (update/full version).

Most versions are nearly twice as expensive! :crazy:

That's already ludicrously obscene!

Windows Vista Home Basic: 139€ ($185)/259€ ($345) -> 87%/73% more

Windows Vista Home Premium: 229€ ($305)/329€ ($438) -> 92%/83% more

Windows Vista Business: 279€ ($372)/419€ ($558) -> 87%/87% more

Windows Vista Ultimate: 349€ ($465)/549€ ($731) -> 80%/83% more

I think it has been established that WGA does give false warnings to paying customers and if anyone says different they are just plain wrong. That being said, how does a paying corp. customer such as myself eliminate this problem short of a reinstall?

I admit that I've run pirated copies of Windows and Office in the past, but now I have legit copies on all my computers. Even when I ran a pirated copy, though, I never had any issues with WGA whatsoever. It's within every right for Microsoft to protect their intellectual property. I'd do the same.

Obviously not :rolleyes:

Looks like piracy is really "hurting" M$ :rolleyes:

If they don't use anti-piracy measures they will get an increase in piracy and a large loss in sales.

This will result in lower revenues.

They've got to keep up the fight.

Yeah but how many people actually buy retail Windows? I would assume most of their profits are from OEM and business sales.

I don't have an issue with WGA on my own system however I have annoying gripes about the license of Windows XP in general the way that Microsoft go about forcing WGA updates on consumers, how you must call them on the telephone to activate your copy of Windows XP, how you cant just forever transfer your copy of Windows XP from 1 computer to another and the price of Windows in general is day light robbery.

They make me annoyed but they own most of the market and although how they did that is up for debate I am practically forced to use Windows XP because of the applications I use demand it. Overall Windows (XP & Vista) are not great and we get a raw deal as consumers ripped off in every way possible.

Anyway I'm running Windows XP MCE. Reluctantly.

I second that :) OEM is one of microsoft strong points :)

Anyway i have never had a problem with WGA nor is notifications 1 reason i dont have it installed :blink: is there really any need of it when there are plenty of alternatives?

But you will get the odd person complaining about it :) well if you can't live with WGA switch OS they even state that you have the choice to install it or not and say in there disclaimer if you dont agree to the terms set discontinue to use the software or don't install it sooo.

With vista they will be able to switch off so called doggy installs.

So my point is quite simple if I buy something / vista when does it become mine ? :huh:

Name any other thing that you buy (Car, Food, House) that after you buy it, it wants to make sure that you had.

If you look at how much games (Gears Of War) and films (King Kong) cost to make compare these to how much it takes for software. Yet we feel its right to pay for over priced software that one day could be removed from us!

    • OpenAI is now rolling out Lockdown Mode to more ChatGPT users by Pradeep Viswanathan Back in February, OpenAI first announced Lockdown Mode for users who want the most comprehensive protection from potential attacks. At the time of the announcement, the company mentioned that this feature was available to a small set of highly security-conscious users, including executives or security teams at leading organizations. Today, OpenAI announced that Lockdown Mode is now rolling out to all personal ChatGPT accounts, including Free, Go, Plus, and Pro, and also self-serve ChatGPT Business accounts. Users can enable the feature from ChatGPT Settings > Security when it is available for their account. When Lockdown Mode is enabled, ChatGPT limits or disables several features that connect to the web or external services. These include live web browsing, Deep Research, Agent Mode, and more. Here is the complete list of services that will be disabled in Lockdown Mode: Live web browsing: Web browsing is limited to accessing only cached content. Search results may be limited, unavailable, or stale. Image support: ChatGPT may not display images in regular responses or retrieve images from the web. Users can still upload image files, and image generation remains available where it is otherwise available. Deep research: Deep research is disabled. Agent mode: Agent mode is disabled. Canvas networking: Users cannot approve Canvas-generated code to access the network. File downloads: ChatGPT cannot download files for data analysis. ChatGPT can still operate on your manually uploaded files. It is important to note that Lockdown Mode does not completely block prompt injections from appearing in content that ChatGPT processes. For example, a malicious instruction could still be present in an uploaded file or cached web content. However, the mode is designed to reduce the ways such an attack could send sensitive information outside the conversation. Along with Lockdown Mode, OpenAI today also announced that the Active sessions feature is now available across ChatGPT accounts and workspace types. This feature allows users to review where their account is signed in across devices and end sessions if required. A session will have the following information displayed: Device or browser information. First-party app context, such as ChatGPT, Codex, or API Platform. Approximate location. Sign-in date and time. Whether the device is a trusted device. Whether it is your current session. OpenAI highlighted that the Active sessions feature will not be available for accounts linked to an organization’s single sign-on setup, including SAML or OIDC.
