Is my wii scratching my game discs?

Recommended Posts

So sometimes, when I'm playing wii, I hear sort of a "beep boop" sound emitting from the disc drive, especially when using my wii sports disc. On some of these occasions, I get an error message telling me to remove my disc and turn the power off on the system. I do so.

Keep in mind I treat my games very well, i don't toss them around or anything, and they're either in the drive or in their box. My discs have quite a few scratches on them, so I figure my system must be doing it.

Is this happening to anyone else? I'm almost afraid to get new games because they're gonna get scratched up, and I'm afraid to scratch up my gamecube discs.

I figure I can get one of those scratch-remover products, but my system shouldn't be doing this to my games.

What cause of action can I take to get my wii fixed?

if you updated to v2.0 the disk read error happens, i have had the same problem. The disk does not get scratched... it just has some problem reading Wii sports every once in awhile. It only happens with Wii sports.. at least on my console and i have played most if not all of the launch titles on my Wii.

and that beeping noise is the same one on the GC, it happens when the disk starts spinning or initially being read.

i haven't updated my wii's firmware at all. my wii is currently vertical; i guess i'll keep it horizontal for a while and see if the problem goes away. as for the scratches, they don't really appear orbital, however, when the wii beeps, is it possible that it's re-orienting the disc in its drive or something?

since we're kinda on the subject of the wii making weird noises.. does anyone else's wii make a funny noise after rebooting it or turning it back on? kinda sounds like the drive is about to eject the disk but then instantly pulls it back in.

I get that noise you're describing. It happens when the screen goes black and all the black and white blank Wii channels appear and suddenly fade away. That screen comes up after I exit a game using the Wii's Home button to go back to the Menu.

Well if Wii Sports is scratched I wouldn't be surprised if it came from sliding in and out of its cardboard box.

I've upgraded to firmware v2.0u and I haven't had any issues with reading games. The guys I live with play Wii Sports all day, and when I get home I put in Zelda, and none of them have any scratches (yet?)

On the other hand.. I do get the "beep" sound when the game is loading. It does take a long time to load some games though.

And today... for the first time EVER... it froze up during a game (Zelda, when I bashed an orge with my sowrd). As soon as I made contact... it just stopped...and I had to re-set it.

The only time I've gotten the whole "remove disk and restart" msg was when I tried putting a music CD and a DVD in it (tee hee).

This thing needs to play music cds. DVDs is another story and thats fine...but theres no licensing thus NO EXCUSE, and the freaking dreamcast did it.

I hear the same thing, but I believe that it might be a normal sound when you're transitioning from exiting a game to the Wii Menu -- it may be as lonelycooler said: the laser is moving, probably to its default position (maybe putting it in the optimal position to get ready to read either Wii or GC disks?).

Now, if I were hearing a buzzing or grinding sound coming from my Wii then I know I have a problem.

Ditto. That's what I always assumed it was. Similar to jumping from track 13 to track 1 on a CD, or from ending credits to opening scene on a DVD. The laser has to move.

    • Let's goooooooo! I've been loving the entries so far! I still have to finish Rebirth (things have been busy!)! Excited for this next installment.
    • "Revelation?" I was hoping for this episode to be called "Reunion". Oh, well... In a related note, the Final Fantasy VII compilation has received an EC entry, short for Ever Crisis. For those who don't know, it already had AC, BC, CC, and DC entries, short for Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus. I hope it doesn't get an FC entry becaude that would be a freakin' crisis.
    • Uh, after intense testing now, 'Samsung Browser' is not the best one outside of 'Microsoft Edge' after all. Opera Air is that. It has "some" bloat, but it's far less than what both Microsoft Edge and Brave browser have.
