Logitech MX Revolution Review

Recommended Posts

Introduction

I've been using Logitech mice for a few years now, and when they released a new range my initial thought was "how can they improve on the MX 1000 laser mouse?!".

Well today I took the plunge and splashed out on this 'designer' mouse.

The Setup

As I already had the latest version of the Logitech SetPoint software installed, all I needed to do was inset the USB dongle into the PC and connect the charging base station to the power adapter.

All as easy as pie!

I launched the SetPoint software and the MX Revolution was already select, and wow are their loads of settings to play with.

Because I'm a bit tight on time, I will save talking you through all the settings, and instead attach all the screen shots of the software so you can see for yourself.

What's New?

Scroll Wheel - At last a scroll wheel I like. This time it doesn't just do line by line scrolling, but if you want it to it will scroll as far and as fast as you can flick it! (with one quick flick, I was able to get it to scroll 9,881 lines in excel). Although this seems a bit over kill, it does make scrolling up and down at Neowin a lot quicker!

Alt Tab Replacement - The thumb wheel does a very good job, and unlike its free spinning brother, this wheel is sprung loaded to return it to the centre after you have pushed it forward or pulled it back with your thumb. You can press the wheel in to call up the alt tab menu, or just push it forward / pull it back. The first time I personally saw this feature was with my MX 1000, but I never used it. Now it is located right next to my thumb I can see myself using this more often.

Search - A nice little button on top of the mouse allows one click search functionality. You can set this so it either pulls up the Windows search dialog, or my personal favourite, take you to a search engine of your choice.

Battery Life - I've only had this a day, and one thing I've noticed in the SetPoint software is that at 100% charge it calculates it will last for 15 days. I'm a bit optimistic over this seeing as my MX1000 required a charge every few days, but reading other reviews show that it can last up to 7 days.

Cost - Please Sit Down

Now you can get a mouse for ?5, this will do the basic tasks. You could buy a wireless mouse for ?25 and get a nice scroll wheel. Now you can take out a mortgage and buy the MX Revolution with a RRP of ?80!

Luckily PC World have a collect in store price of ?52, this saves you a good bit of money but it is still expensiveOverall

Now what you have to remember, although this mouse costs more than some keyboard and mice bundles cost altogether, you are getting a superb product. Build quality is excellent, it looks great, and it feels nice. At the end of the day you get what you pay for and after all, you will be using this one piece of equipment more so than any other while operating your computer.

Go on, splash out on yourself!Images - Feel free to click them to make larger

good review, i had a chance to try this at a local best buy, and despite the new scroll wheel and grip, i didnt like the scroll wheel lookalike thing on the thumb location, it just didnt feel right, perhaps it could take time to get use to, other than that its an awsome mouse, industry leader, the mx1000 feels way obsolete now (maybe not) anyways have good use with your revolution.

Yeah looks good. The only thing is I wish this and more specifically the VX version were bluetooth. With many laptops now having built in bluetooth it sort of makes sense that at least in the laptop version you use that so as to not waste a usb port and needing to plug that into your laptop every time. For those without they could throw in a bluetooth dongle. Also makes sense since so many products dont share the wireless dongles and inevitable people end up with a few of them.

But yes, this is one mouse that I am looking at getting sometime. I have the MX1000 and the middle mouse is too stiff nowdays. The only thing is I want a new keyboard, ideally in the dinovo range and atm the Edge is far too expensive but the older models ship with an MX1000 so I dont want to fork out for that AND a mouse. Hopefully they put this in a bundle with one of their higher end keyboard soon seeing as the MX1000 took a few months to find its way to the dinovo set.

What camera do you have?

It's a Canon EOS 20D, 18-55 stock lens or 50mm f/1.8 fixed lens and a 580EX Flashgun. Nice set up

And the mouse, it really isn't that small! The only gripe I have with it, is I find it too heavy. Although I've gone from a diamondback (which is supremely light) so I suppose there's room for me to get used to it yet.

If you find it frustrating that you can't fully customize the mx revolution with the setpoint software.(bad logitech! spank, spank) Download uberOptions for setpoint. It will unlock keystroke options for the thumb wheel, etc.

LEGEND! :) I've wondered if there was something like this, much appreciated bud!

I also have a Dell, 24" :D I have set my MX to ultra sensitive so I can get the mouse from one side of the screen to the other with minimal movement :D

  • 2 months later...
  • 4 weeks later...

I have tried the mx1000 the g7 and the mx revolution and they are all nice mice

the mx1000 felt heavy but I got use to it and missed it when I got the g7 and g7's battery life was not as good but it had 2 of them one in the charger one in the mouse at all times

the revolution is nice but after getting use to having 2 batterys I'm not sure I will get use to it

Unfortunatly a blue tooth mouse is out of reach for me, since they don't work with my KVM switch, Although I could hook a second mouse up to the KVM, it would defeat the purpose of having the rocking mouse.

I got one and it owns, the best thing about it is the fact that it lasts really long. I've used it 24 hours straight and it hasn't died a single time yet, so when I go to sleep I can just put it on the charger port (yea I went on a business trip and used it the whole time)
