Mac OS X 'Leopard'-related Discussion

Recommended Posts

Well, Yeah I knew all of those were German Tanks as well, Call of Duty FTW. It just seams a little bizzare that they'd chose these names.

Maybe this would be more interesting, Mac OS X.6 Chimpanzee

Then again it'd be very hard to have a decent convosation with a name like that. Now that makes me wonder how many more years it'll be before we see OS 11.

Anyone know if WAP 802.1x is working yet? It was borked on my macbook for the last two builds. I'll probably just wait until it's gold.

Wi-Fi worked fine for me on the WWDC build, I haven't tried any of the recent builds, though.

I think 10.6 will be Lynx and 10.7 will be Cougar.

You really think they're take OS 10 as far as 10.7? 10.5 is like, overstaying its welcome! We need something completely new built from the ground up for complete awesome-ness in 64-bit flavor only.

And by built from the ground up I dont mean Microsofts "Built from the ground up" yet it still has a 3.1 font box.

No Dock, No Menus, Something Bizzare that you'd expect Nintendo to come up with.

Thats just my views anyway

Except Microsoft never once claimed Vista was built from the ground up... But that's another story.

Anyway, the reason Apple made OS X in the first place was because the classic Mac OS lacked things like protected memory, preemptive multi-tasking, etc. There's nothing wrong with OS X, so why ditch it for something entirely new? That just means that all the software we use now will have to be completely rewritten all over again.

And so what if Apple continues to build upon OS X? It's nothing new. System 7 had releases all the way up to 7.7.x, if I recall correctly. Look at Leopard, it's vastly different from Tiger, and (likely) the only reason it's still part of OS X is because it still uses the Darwin kernel.

Jobs said that OS X would last them for at least 10 years. Considering development schedules 10.6 should be the last revision of OS X (released 2009). The again, Jobs could now feel that OS X is good enough for the time being and there is no reason to move over to a new architecture.

Good point, there isnt anything wrong with OS X... Still, it's just a little weird. The Kernel is the same but the GUI and whatnot has changed alot over the revisions, so, why not call it a whole new OS.. maybe thats just my microsoft side talking.

Otherwise, OS X FTW

But the GUI isn't the OS. Leopard may use a drastically new interpretation of Aqua, but it still has the same Darwin kernel that's been there since Cheetah. Thus, until we get a brand new kernel, we won't see OS 11 any time soon. We will eventually, but we don't need it yet. In a lot of ways, Mac OS X is still ahead of its time. Leopard is now an officially licensed Unix OS, and keep in mind that Unix has existed for over 40 years.

ThinkSecret has put up a gallery chock full of screenshots from the latest build: http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/leopard9a527/

Most icons have been updated to 512px. The detail is amazing. There are also other visual enhancements.

They're really going all the way with this "out of this world" theme aren't they?

It's to match Time Machine. You'll notice that each new release of OS X typically has one new, major feature that receives major focus. Cheetah was more or less the Aqua user interface. I guess Puma is an exception, it didn't have any major breakthrough features. Nor did Jaguar. But Panther introduced Expose and the brushed metal take on Aqua. Tiger had a few major features, including Dashboard and Spotlight, as well as bringing us the unified Aqua theme. Leopard brings Time Machine and Spaces.

Time Machine is going to be wonderful. I may get one of those Airport Extreme routers just so I can have my external HD and printer hooked up to it. Then I can use my Macbook anywhere in my apartment and not have to worry about cables (outside of when using the scanner), with Time Machine backups happening hourly.

It's more Leopard than Tiger that brings a unified Aqua interface... It's even Jobs who said that.

That whole "space/universe" concept with Time Machine, a darker interface, the new intro movie and some other things is gorgeous though :)

They really nailed it, because they took a theme that nobody can actually dislike... or maybe someone in the world is not fascinated at all by the universe, the stars, the sun, the other planets, time travelling, etc. but I doubt it.

    • I am not a fan of haptic feedback touchpads. I've owned a Surface Laptop 7 (Snapdragon) with one and a Lenovo Slim (Intel), and I hated both to the point where I purchased different laptops. It's not that they don't work most of the time; it's that they don't work 100% of the time, and there is no advantage from a user's perspective over a good mechanical trackpad like what's on a ThinkPad X1 or a Yoga 9i. I do not believe that I'll buy another haptic feedback touchpad laptop again in the near future.
    • Works fine here too. About this build, I don't like to download any kind of Windows, from any site except Microsoft. The mod might work, but I don't know what it's inside. Can contain malware, backdoors... Long time ago I've used something like this but reversed - it was 98se with the look and some functionality  of XP. Or, later XP with Vista look. But I made it myself. Not downloaded from obscure sites.
    • Rockstar gives last-gen GTA V players free upgrades tomorrow by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Rockstar is preparing to launch Grand Theft Auto VI later this year, but ahead of that, the company has revealed a new offer for some Grand Theft Auto V owners. It today announced that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version owners of the 2013-released title will soon be receiving a free upgrade to the current generation version. The studio released the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto V back in 2022, bringing significant upgrades to the original console editions. This included 60 FPS gameplay at up to 4K resolution, as well as major upgrades to textures, draw distance, and audio. Faster load times, ray tracing elements, and HDR support were also added with it. While this new and enhanced version needed a new purchase of the game to jump in, now Rockstar has decided to make it a free upgrade, dropping the $40 price tag entirely on consoles. "Beginning tomorrow, those who own any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions at no additional cost, and experience the best versions of GTA V and GTA Online," said the company in an official blog post. The free upgrade offer will be released tomorrow, June 18, for all Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners of Grand Theft Auto V. Players who will be jumping in on the offer will want to check how to migrate their GTA Online profile from last-generation to current-generation consoles by heading over here. The offer lands ahead of The Kortz Center Heist hitting Grand Theft Auto Online, where players and crews will be tasked with stealing priceless international art from a prestigious gallery in Pacific Bluffs. It doesn't look like Rockstar plans to stop updating its previous game even with Grand Theft Auto VI being on the horizon. The latest title is slated to launch on November 19, 2026, across Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
