Mac OS X 'Leopard'-related Discussion

Interesting. I wonder how long it will take for it to leak in Final form. I remember years past that Tiger GM leaked about 2 weeks before the release date and Neowin enforced a no screenshots / no talking about using it on the forum.

Getting close to the final release now.. I feel indifferent thats for sure.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that 599 is in fact like 1 build away from GM. Who knows, maybe final build number will be 9a600. As for seeing the GM build early... I doubt it. It's possible yes, but I think 599 will be the last seeded build on ADC until It's released when ADC members will download their copy.

9A600 would be a nice round number to finish off with.

Beautiful. Talking about polish and paying attention to detail! ;)

I'm hoping that applications will be updated faster to support Leopard, it took them quite a while after Tiger hit GM. Currently iLife '08, iWork '08 and Adobe Creative Suite 3 don't run properly.

The Leopard UI is more consistent, but not more polished, it looks far "cheaper" than Tiger did. Now Neo will most definitely disagree with me and some others will too, but comparing them side by side you will notice the difference in quality. Granted its not a train wreck or anything, but it definitely shows someone different is working on its GUI this time around. As for the statement regarding it being like Vista, thats a bit much, Leopard will be a prime OS as far as functionality and programs go, its GUI will be the work in progress imo. I like the direction they are going but they didn't quite make it yet and it certainly shows. Only downside is Apple has never really updated the theme of a Mac OS release, so don't count on it changing much until 10.6, but its very obvious whoever is doing the new work isn't as critical for every fine detail as the previous designer was. Pixel perfectionists will be upset by this, but the average person won't. I just hope they finish the resolution independence as that was one feature I was really looking forward to.

Btw the new nano is quite nice in person, in pictures especially dead on, it looks terrible, like a big crappy photoshop bevel, in your hand its quite different.

I agree with you completely, I just had to skim through to come to that conclusion.

i thought that the last released build is 559?

Probably be another special event, still annoyed with the interface - seems like a hash of everything put together. Tiger's was refined, maybe it will grow on me ....

Radish?

When does Apple intend to announce the release date of Leopard? I thought they'd do it at the Paris Expo, but apparently not.

If I remember correctly they didn't announce Tiger's precise release date until it was actually done.

People used to say the same thing about Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar while 10.3 Panther was in beta.

History really does repeats itse:p. :p

Usually, do final OS 10.X install on any (even beta) versions of previous OS X installations?

You can't update betas to GM versions. You should be able to update Tiger to Leopard. Not sure if you could update Panther, or below, to Leopard.

Well mainly it was the pinstripes that got more subtle over time with OS X revisions until Leopard came along (in that sense it was like Microsoft's Luna, it was a complete theme).

The only thing that didn't change back then was the brushed appearance itself. Otherwise basically everything saw updates or color tweaks.

Leopard finally gets rid of those pinstripes altogether.

This metal is worse, it makes me think the entire UI is made of cardboard. Can't stand that feeling, and its friggin everywhere as well!

Radish don't worry bud your not alone. Apple really got their wires crossed this time, gloss or no gloss? all metal or mostly metal, it seems they wanted consistency but got screwed up halfway through. Mail and Preview toolbars are NOT consistent, scrollbars, push buttons, checkboxes, are NOT consistent, new folders are not consistent with the other old icons and even the new ones they created for Time Machine, Spaces, ect. If it were all consistent I'd be less annoyed even with the current look (which sucks imo) but the fact that its all mixed up annoys me. I don't think it will grow on me, but its not enough to make me not upgrade. But don't worry give me a few months after its release and hopefully I'll be able to give it a consistent GUI.
