Chicane-UK Veteran Posted October 24, 2007 Veteran Share Posted October 24, 2007 I think its a little bit unfair to compare 10.4 -> 10.5 as a service pack. I'm fairly objective in that i've only recently come to Mac ownership after being a LONG time Windows user but Leopard does not appear to be anything like a service pack. I mean XP SP2 added what.. some new security features and a raft of bug fixes? And er.. what else? I personally feel that as a complete package, Leopard will offer excellent value for money. I mean its $129 for heavens sake. You could argue that if you already own Tiger its not an ESSENTIAL upgrade and i'd agree with that but if you want the latest and greatest or you are a few generations behind on OSX its a bargain. To put it on the flip side - i've never had the desire to pay for a Windows OS. Fortunately, because of my job(s), i've never had to. I have no qualms about paying for OSX though. PyX
I haven't seen this mentioned, but spotlight... is FAST.... Super super super fast. Yeah, even in the betas, I could simply not believe it. I think I mentioned it already a couple of pages ago. Even when you type, it doesn't hang, it doesn't lag and I think it even gives results. To those who have it, aqua scrollbars are still there, right? Edit : Also, did iTunes adopt the "darker" look of Leopard or it's still the same? Last one : Is there still a way to open hotmail messages in mail? httpmail plugin doesn't seem to work, and I heard about Macfreepops or something... REM2000
Volume Shadow Copying is not a backup tool, it's a versioning tool. Allowing you to go back and restore previous versions, VSC works using the same volume/drive so if there was a drive failure you would loose everything. Time Machine is a backup system with Versioning, i.e. the data is backed up to another drive/volume with users being able to restore various versions. Yes VSC can be used in conjunction with Microsoft Backup and Third Party apps, (VSC helps stop file dead locking) however you still need to perform the backup outside of VSC. Personally i can't wait for Leopard, i think the ?85 cost is very acceptable, i use windows aswell (XP, not vista) i know a lot of people say that they have not had to pay for upgrades for 5 years, however this is not by Microsoft's design, if everything went well with Vista then the upgrade would have happened a lot earlier, microsoft practiced the same upgrade path during the 90's 95 -> 98 -> ME, and currently they are set to get back into the same cycle with the expected release of the next version of windows coming in 2010. Timan Veteran Posted October 24, 2007 Veteran Share Posted October 24, 2007 Initial impressions after about 12hrs of use. - Almost everything is noticeably faster. - Mail with about 5000 messages in it, opens instantly, same with safari. - Finder still crashes when you mess with networking shares - Like divinatum said, spotlight actually works now and is instant, seems indexing takes no time now - Time machine isn't working over airport extreme (Disk) - Finder still does not remember window sizes like Tiger (let down) - You use the leopard dvd to install the bootcamp drivers. You also setup the partitions without having to restart (awesome) - Alot of legacy tweaks (cocktail, macpilot, etc) still work when you enable em, such as hidden apps in dock. - You can NOT! :( resize images in preview anymore, this is a huge let down for me, now I have to use photoshop. - iTunes caption widgets are still the old Tiger ones (seems to be the only app like this) also the slowest app so far in leopard. - Dev tools comes with LOADs more stuff than previous osx's did. - When changing icons in apps, they reflect instantly now, no more delays - Aqua scroll bars (who cares) also you can't change the finderbar transparency like some people said (looks fine). - Seems they removed alot of the stuff that was in earlier betas, screen savers, wallpapers, RESIZE (again) I'm still digging around with it, but so far so good. Since I knew leopard wasn't gonna be a big upgrade like Panther was (still my favorite one), all though it has a ton of new tweaks. I still think this is more of a service pack than a "new os". Cause majority of the changes they did, was stuff they had to do. instant.human
Wheres the option in Preview in Tiger to resize images. Never knew it was there. iirc it was stated somewhere that in preview you would be able to resize and i wouldve been very, very happy if that was actually the case. but apparently not. would be cool to have something like that built into the system-own image viewer. would be pretty handy. instant.human
^i have to agree, i use photoshop for that, but it rather sucks if you always have to fire up photoshop or pixelmator for just resizing an image, imho.would be cool if you could do it right away in preview, with which you normally open pictures to look at them. well whatever, its okay. wouldve been cool though, i repeat. =) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/521244-mac-os-x-leopard-related-discussion/page/49/#findComment-588942055 Share on other sites
crazzyyfool
In Front Row in Leopard GM. Is the transition still a boring fade to black or a desktop zoom like Tiger? Timan Veteran Posted October 24, 2007 Veteran Share Posted October 24, 2007 In Front Row in Leopard GM. Is the transition still a boring fade to black or a desktop zoom like Tiger? A crappy fade to black. It also pauses ANY media you have playing before you go into front row. Also it pauses ANY media you have playing (music) when you exit frontrow. Which sucks, since I'd usually play music in frontrow and then when i sit at my comp Id like the music to keep playing when I go back to my DT :( Seems to still open itunes, but not iphoto when viewing photos. Grrr. How disappointing. Why did Apple remove the zoom transition? Surely with Core Animation built in to Leopard they could have kept the transition in. That really sucks, I can see how they didn't keep the animation because the new front row doesn't have the same appearance. But the pausing of the media is really annoying, I'd usually open iTunes, find a playlist, jump into front row and just select now playing, it would be nice if they didn't pause it every friggin time. 10.5.1. Better come soon, there's a lot of little things that need to be fixed. Timan Veteran Posted October 24, 2007 Veteran Share Posted October 24, 2007 I'm shocked bootcamp still hasn't been improved much since the beta a year ago. Be nice if it put your osx into hibernation, then boot into windows, vice versa when you leave the os.
