Mac OS X 'Leopard'-related Discussion

Hm.. well i'm all installed and up and running.

Actually its not blowing me away quite how I hoped it would. I appreciate my Mac Mini is on the 'low end' of the hardware ladder for Apple but things like the magnify effect on dock are now stuttery slow where they were smooth in Tiger (thanks to the pointless reflections I guess) though I already do like some features that have become obvious.

I suppose I should just get cracking with it and see how it appeals after a few weeks!

Is it still indexing? It usually takes a few hours after the initial install to get it at full speed.

Did a clean install (totally wiped my system disk ready) - thinking that the 2D dock might be a better idea but it seems a shame given that its one of Leopards prettiest features! :)

I'm on a MBP and the 3D dock does feel sluggish, they need to do some optimization on it.

I guess wait for 10.5.1. Although the Dock works fine for me. I've even customized it a bit, I've replaced the white glass with black glass.

I'm on a 2.0GHz MBP and my dock feels snappy. The only thing that's a tiny bit jumpy is the expansion of a stack of my Applications folder into a grid.

Hmm, thats probably a really good idea. I've got an upgrade install and 10.5.1 would be a great opportunity to do a clean install and fix a considerable amount of bugs, anyone have any idea what kind of timeframe we expect for 10.5.1? Maybe we'll get a lesslaggy iTunes as well :o

i just don't understand all the issues you are getting, everything is running flawlessly for me.

Same here. Save for some minor UI glitches and some fluidity in the UI functions (Dashboard and Dock animations), I haven't seen anything alarming whatsoever. A huge contrast to 10.4.0, from what I can see.

Actually having spent a few hours using it now, magnification of the dock is the only slower thing i've noticed. Everything else (especially Safari!) seems to be fairly speedy - even a little quicker than Tiger in fact.. which is nice :)

I'm on a MacBook 2.16GHz with 2GB of RAM and I get lag with the 3D Dock, plus I think it looks crap, 2D dock is far better for work flow.

How does a different look change your workflow? It still does the same thing. If you complained about how Stacks changed the way folders worked, then you would be making sense.

Has anyone found performance from external (USB) drives to be... slow? I'm trying to copy my iTunes folder back from a FAT32 volume and its taking an eternity for something that is only a few GB in size!

Very hard to explain, I just find the 2D dock with it's square boarder makes things far more centred and clean, but with the 3D dock things are almost like some Windows shortcuts thrown in on the bottom of the screen with true direction. BAH, very hard to explain, but I find the 2D dock looking more professional and clean, thus it improves my productivity.

Alright, with all the Leopard talk, I had to take the plunge. I'm fully operational after a clean install and, I must say, I don't notice any real speed difference versus a year-old Tiger installation. However, my biggest surprise is the new implementation of Spotlight. I don't know what they did, but searches are instant! Besides that though, Front Row (aka Apple TV) looks like rubbish, the dock needed to be heavily modded to be usable, and the damn transparent menu is god-awful annoying. I'm using LeoColorBar now with a black background so the bar appears brushed metal and matches the rest of the operating system. Although, I really would like my wasted blurring/transparency GPU cycles back.

All in all, moderately impressed, but definitely not worth $130.

Oh, and why do the menus have round corners? It just makes them look gaudy.

Leopard runs great on my powerbook G4 1.67GHz. The only thing I noticed to be faster in Tiger than Leopard on my machine is spotlight. Any ideas on why this is happening or how I can speed it up?

If you just installed it, give it a couple hours to index your drive. That's why it seems slow right now.

    • Millions of users to benefit from Windows 11's new performance boost on Adobe Photoshop by Sayan Sen Despite the advent of AI-generated imagery, Adobe's Photoshop remains one of the most popular tools on this planet. Adobe does not have a publicly reported total user count but it's probably not wrong to assume there are millions. As of 2025, Adobe Creative Cloud has had approximately 41 million paid subscribers, many of whom likely use Photoshop. In addition, more than 166,000 companies worldwide are apparently also using the app. These figures are according to a very recent report by SQ Magazine. Out of them, it is fair to assume that many are probably running Windows. As such, there is good news for these users as Microsoft has announced Photoshop is getting a big 20% performance boost on x86-64 (AMD64) systems and a 13% bump-up on Arm devices. This is definitely great news for them as many have complained about the slow performance and general sluggishness of Photoshop on Windows 11 ever since the advent of the latter back in 2021. If you are wondering how Microsoft managed to do this, the answer lies in a combination of compiler-level optimizations and a technology called Sample Profile Guided Optimization (SPGO). According to Microsoft, Adobe worked closely with the company’s Visual C++ team and adopted the latest MSVC toolchain enhancements together with SPGO to squeeze more performance out of Photoshop’s CPU-bound workloads. Unlike traditional Profile Guided Optimization (PGO), which requires developers to create special instrumented builds and run lengthy training workloads, SPGO gathers performance data directly from optimized release binaries. This means Adobe could collect real-world usage information which gives a major advantage to this technique, as companies could leverage data collected from actual customer workloads rather than only relying on synthetic benchmark runs. In theory, this should allow optimizations to better reflect how users interact with software in the real world. Thanks to this, there are improvements to code layout, function inlining, hot-and-cold code separation, and other low-level tweaks that help processors execute instructions more efficiently. Essentially the compiler is better able to identify “hot” code paths, those which are most frequently executed, and optimize them accordingly.
    • "The 2TB Samsung 990 PRO NVMe SSD hits lowest price in over three months¨ I'd prefer to see the lowest price in over a year
    • Glad these prices are starting to come down, but that is still crazy. I bought the 2TB 9100 Pro (slightly more expensive version with PCIe 5.0) last year for $240.
    • The 2TB Samsung 990 PRO NVMe SSD hits lowest price in over three months by Sayan Sen Yesterday, we covered a really good deal wherein you can get a 4TB TeamGroup T-FORCE G50 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD for a low price of just $400 with a special discount coupon. That's just $100 per TB, making it a very good offer during these hard times. The deal is still live, so you can check it out in its dedicated article here if you do not want to miss out. Meanwhile, if you don't have that kind of budget but still wish to buy an SSD for a good price, the 2TB variant of the TeamGroup SSD at $280 its lowest price in over three months. Meanwhile, those seeking 2TB but faster performance can check out Samsung's 990 PRO, which has hit the lowest price also in the last quarter or so, as it's on sale for $370 (purchase links under the specs table down below). Thus, you want a faster drive, get the 990 Pro, or you want more capacity, grab the TeamGroup 4TB linked in the first para. The 990 PRO is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD and still one of the fastest drives available today for under $500. Speaking of fast, sequential reads and writes are rated at 7450 MB/s and 6900 MB/s, respectively. The random throughputs for reads and writes are 1400K IOPS and 1550K IOPS, respectively. The 990 PRO is based on Samsung's 7th Gen V-NAND flash, and it too is TLC. It packs 2 gigs of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, which helps the random performance. The endurance rating for this is 1200 TBW (terabytes written), which should be sufficient for most users. The Samsung 990 PRO is compatible with the PlayStation 5, but if you are going to use the 990 PRO on a PC, check out the Samsung Magician app that lets you track your drive's health, update its firmware, customize various settings, and more.
