Mac OS X 'Leopard'-related Discussion

Does anyone know what "Home Sync" is?

post-61366-1193990952.png

Go to;

/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras

there are lots of Menu Extras which don't appear by default.

The Scripts Menu still has old-style folders too.

I added that home sync and other icons to the menu bar how do i remove them now? :p

It's not here?

/System/Library/CoreServices/Archive Utility.app/

It's there for me but when I do a Spotlight search I get nothing.

... Strange. It seems that anything in the System folder Spotlight won't index. The privacy tab in Spotlight is empty so I didn't manually set it to not index it either.

Same thing happened with me. It appears Spotlight won't index there, and there's no way to change that. Not that I mind.

Is there anyway to change the display DPI in Leopard? I really want to use 120 DPI instead of 72 (I think that's the default).

I like to use my computer at a distance and everything is just too small. In Windows I can adjust the display DPI to make everything larger, but there's no way to do this in OS X??

And where is the resolution independence I heard that's supposed in Leopard?

Resolution Independence will be coming in the next few updates as goes the roamer flying around.

As for the DPI, Go into System Preferences then click Universal Access, you should find something in there.

Are you guys getting a huge performance hit while Time Machine is doing its thing? I am.

Only when it first does its thing. After that, the incremental backups are fluid and I don't notice a performance hit at all.

Hey Xero, any more news on your Leopard theme?

Radish?

At the moment it's impossible to theme Mac OS X Leopard beyond tweaking some of the default colors.

Extras.rsrc isn't being used anymore, instead all of the resources are moved to AquaUI.bundle. The really fun part is that only a slight fraction of "Aqua" actually consists of image files (PDFs/PNGs/TIFFs). The majority is drawn from code, located in .xml files.

For example the default checkbox uses myfigure.pdf for it's check symbol and its blue color from aquamaterial.png. The actual shape, shade etc. of the box is generated by 2800+ lines of code inside the .xml files. Currently there's no application that can read/edit those .xml files properly. Rumors are that Apple used a in-house application to create the interface.

if you're interested, here's an article about the subject:

Same story here.

Anyone figure out how to make it so that the Stack icon displays the folder and not all the crap in the folder? I have seen some basic automator things but nothing to great yet

I believe you can achieve this by going to ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and change the "tile-type" string to "folder-tile". Save it, and relaunch the Dock.

Haven't tried it myself though.

After the initial backup (which is long and processor intensive), it literally takes seconds for Time Machine to complete its hourly backups for me, then it lies dormant until the next hour. Amazing. FSEvents is brilliant.

Time Machine alone makes Leopard the 2nd best Mac OS I've ever used.

Yep, it works. Although, you can't browse the contents of the folder through right click which is what some people are really wanting.

Do you know of any other tile-types?

Nope none other than you already posted. :)

The thing I miss is some functionality the betas offered at some point. You could select a bunch of applications (the .app files, not the folder that contained them) > Drag them to the Applications part of the Dock > And they would form an application group/stack.

Yeah. I would love to have that.

Looks like Spotlight skips out on searching Library and System from the menubar on / for security reasons. I'm fine with it though.

My Spotlight seems to index system files ;)

I've done some digging around and it seems that there is no way to change the display DPI in OS X, not even in Leopard.

Resolution independence seems to be unfinished, at least its not usable to the end-user. The only way to scale the UI is through AppleDisplayScaleFactor which has been there since 10.4. And it's still buggy - I tried changing the scale to 1.5 (which I really liked, everything is big and smooth), however there are some major issues with it. Not everything is scaled properly, not even the Finder.

How long do we have to stick with 72 DPI!?

    • The problem isn't with Epic, it's with the platform holders like Steam and Nintendo, they should be a lot more strict in their review process.
