Update for Multi-Cores/CPUs and HT systems

Computers that are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and that are equipped with multiple processors that support processor power management features may experience decreased performance.

Computers that are equipped with multiple processors that support processor power management features, such as Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) processor performance states, require Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Additional updates are available to optimize performance and behavior on computers that are running Windows XP SP2. Without these updates, computers that are equipped with these power management-capable, mobile, dual-core processors may experience decreased performance or unexpected behavior.

Install this update to fix a situation where your Windows-based system that supports processor power management features, and is equipped with multiple processors, may experience decreased performance.

Yes I suppose, it's version 5.0, it updated some files (I had installed all prev. updates including Dec. patchs), for example "system32/ntoskrnl.exe" now shows version 5.1.2600.3023 instead of 5.1.2600.27xx something.

From the KB article it sounds like this will also only affect systems with Speedstep/Cool 'n Quiet in use.

You mean version 4 ... WindowsXP-KB896256-v4-x86-ENU.exe.

Previous patch was version 3 and wasn't available to the public (at least not from MS.)

Ok I only have one P4, with HT. I am able to install this? Or does it have a thing that when you run it, it will say you cannot install or whatnot?

Everything seems to open up a little faster. Not a huge difference, but still a difference nonetheless.

No, if you have a multicore processor and ACPI, then you should install it :)

Why you don't just install it? :) if it wont benefit, it wont hurt either.

I have a P4 HT too, installed it, got 50 points more in PCMark05, so I'm not complaining.

Just installed on my p4 HT, don't really notice much of a difference, but things seem to open just a little faster.

Sorry, I should have added in that as well. Any multicore or HT system with ACPI will benefit.
