Update for Multi-Cores/CPUs and HT systems

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

2. Right-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, point to New, and then click Key.

3. Type Throttle for the new key name.

4. Right-click Throttle, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

5. Type PerfEnablePackageIdle for the value name.

6. Right-click PerfEnablePackageIdle, and then click Modify.

7. In the Value data box, type 0. Make sure that Hexadecimal is selected in the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, and then click OK.

Note You can type 1 in the Value data box to enable the new performance state policy behavior.

8. Quit Registry Editor.

Ok, so... if I want to use this update do I set PerfEnablePackageIdle to 0 or 1? I assume "new performance state policy behavior" is the thing that gets installed with the update so... I pick 1?

Set it to 1 to enable whatever new stuff is included with this hotfix. You shouldn't even have to touch the registry after installing this.

Noticed a slight improvement in system startup and shutdown. Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne are more responsive when there are lots of units on the screen

It is only good for mobile HT and dual-core CPU with speedstep, no noticable different will be observed on desktop platform.

** www.amd.com have a new November release of the dual core optimiser (I prefer this over windows hotfix as it gained me performance on my 4200+ whereas the hotfix did not)

Anyway, I installed the crashfix hotfix and updated the dual core optimiser. 2fps boost @ 82fps in lost coast video stress test (1680x1050 2x FSAA 16xAF max everything with TSAA:SS enabled and Gamma correct AA as ell as colour correction turned on)

Windows seems to be a small bit more responsive as well?

I have a Dell XPS 410 with an Intel 2.4ghz Core Duo processor, but I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with Update Roll-Up 2. Should I install this? My guess is yes, but I don't want to mess-up what is already a fast system, especially if this fix doesn't really help Media Center Edition.

These changes make sure that Windows XP correctly functions on multiprocessor systems with processor performance states.

In case of Intel processors the "processor performance states" are called SpeedStep technology. For AMD it is called Cool'n'Quiet or PowerNow!. If your processor does not support those technologies, or you have disabled support of those technologies in BIOS - this update will be totally useless.

So laptop users may need it (if they have dual core CPU). Pentium 4 HT users need not to worry. Everyone else needs to check their BIOS settings :rolleyes:

PS. And of course this update is only for dual core or dual CPU or HT processors. Single core CPUs are not affected.

This is confusing, in the second paragraph you say Pentium 4 HT users dont need to worry, then in the third paragraph you say HT processors need this thou single core processors dont. Correct me if I'm wrong that Pentium 4 HT are single core processors unless its a Intel Pentium D. Can someone please clarify?
