Question

A fresh "Best Antivirus" poll for 2007. Please use this as a reference when researching antivirus utilities. As time goes on, the poll can be updated to add further options.

Due to limitations of IPB - this will be seen as 2 polls. Select the Antivirus program you wish to vote for, and choose N/A in the other poll.

Happy voting!

Poll choices are links to the software pages.

Nod32 is nowhere near as good and has a ugly Gui :x

Its a good thing that NOD32 is eons better than its GUI will make you think it is.

I think we all know what happens to performance when a company makes an attractive GUI instead of working on their bread and butter.

nod32 and kapersky aren't even free are they? i thought this poll was only for FREE ones...

The topic title is "Definitive Best Antivirus 2007". "Free" doesn't always necessarily mean "Best".

NOD32!11111!!!!!!

And why so many guys choose "N/A"?

Because they feel that their hardware firewall and computer sense are enough to prevent infections in the first place.

And why so many guys choose "N/A"?

To make it clear.. when voting you have to choose one application in EACH of the two polls. If the one you want is in poll 1, you select it there, and choose NA in poll 2 - hence why there are so many N/A's. You should ignore this option when comparing popularity.

My vote goes to NOD32 too.

Light (uses 10-12mb of RAM on my machine), responsive (won't slow down the computer), virus signature updated many times a day, neat and minimalist interface (no useless crap), easy to use (you install the software, let it to it's job, and forget it), etc.

I've been using Kaspersky and Avast for 5-6 years before switching for NOD32 last year, I'd never go back

I thought NOD32 offered a free home version . I doubt most of you actually paid for it since it's so expensive. I think AVast is the best since it's not a resource hog and has so many protections and it's FREE!

People always compare anti-virus based on memory usage. This is because everyone knows how much Norton consumes. I read "I switched from <anti-virus> because it was resource-heavy" or "I like <anti-virus> because its light on resources". Just to clarify, most of today's anti-virus programs are nowhere near as bad as Norton.

AntiVir, Avast, AVG, BitDefender, ClamWin, F-Prot, Kaspersky, NOD32, and Sophos (and likely others I haven't yet tested) don't take up nearly as much as Norton.

If you have 512MB, 1GB, 2GB or more RAM, let an application use your RAM. It's one thing to complain that an application is using 50 MBs of RAM because you're picky, and another to notice potential memory leaks/poor coding.

While doing system scans (some examples of approximate/rounded-off numbers):

NOD32 = 45 MBs

Symantec 8.5i = 55 MBs

Norton 2003 = 65 MBs

Norton 2006 = 120 MBs

So instead of "going with the crowd" and believing what others say, anything can be better or worse than anything else. If you actually take time each day to see for yourself, only then will you know the truth about these programs you swear by. One thing is for sure; most anti-virus programs are as light as a feather when compared to Norton 2006.

I used Norton 2003 and 2004 when they came out. They were resource hogs, and couldn't even get rid of the threats/viruses that it managed to detect.

Since then, I joined Neowin, got smarter and started using Avast because it was free.

Switched to Kaspersky, somehow I didn't really like the interface.

Now I'm using NOD32 and there is NO looking back :p

NOD32 (Y)
