Question

A fresh "Best Antivirus" poll for 2007. Please use this as a reference when researching antivirus utilities. As time goes on, the poll can be updated to add further options.

Due to limitations of IPB - this will be seen as 2 polls. Select the Antivirus program you wish to vote for, and choose N/A in the other poll.

Happy voting!

Poll choices are links to the software pages.

It's your computer and your systems safety however,

Norton is more like a virus than an Anti-virus.

It takes over your system, hogs your resources and unfortunately,

doesn't' rank very high in the protection scheme.

It is also very widely used and is one of the reasons why we have so many infected computers. IMHO

Well thats your opinion, an antivirus app is only as good as it's definition file.

Some engines do scan without latest defs, but know if something is suspicious.

My Norton Anti Virus Subscription expired should I stay with them and re-sub scrip or go with nod32 can I have reasons please thank you.

If you read these topics, and go to www.av-comparatives.org you'll find all the proof you need. Use the SymNRT tool and install Avast or AntiVir. try them out, see how you like them.

I'm afraid you're suffering from denial and have also been living under a rock for a very long time now. Norton is the absolute worst anti-virus. I've tried 20 products and Norton is in its own league of crapiness.

Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition and Norton Antivirus are two seperate things.

I have seen the "user" or "home" versions that Symantec installs preloaded on new machines. Yeah, it sucks big time.

However I see no problem with SAV Corp 10.1. Plus, try managing 1200 workstations with antivirus software with anything else But Symantec System Center. ;)

Has anyone else tried the Aol branded Kaspersky?

Yes, I have. It's exactly what you'd think it is. It's Kaspersky with AOL's name on it. The GUI is the same otherwise and so is the functionality and processes; "avp.exe", two instances as usual.

- The installer includes a "Security Toolbar" which I passed on.

- It also does not give you a custom install option so the File and Mail Protection components are installed regardless.

- The icon looks like the turnable knob you'd find on a washer or dryer.

- When you install it, it will ask to reboot, do a 5MB update and then reboot again.

- The activation code is good for 1 year, upon expiration the program will immediately become completely unusable.

- Kaspersky's trial period is for 1 month.

Conclusion: For the exact same thing for 11 additional months of it not pestering you to purchase it or whatever, use AOL's branded version.

Oh, and incase you want the installer and activation key without having to submit your e-mail address to AOL:

Activation Code: GUYP2-KJZWV-6X8ZW-ZBFQ7

+1 vote for Avast! (Home Edition)

been using it since i switched from AVG.... definitely caught more, and been a great Freeware Anti-Virus.. I also got 4 other comps using it, and anytime any of them get a virus warning, i get a Messenger Popup (through messenger service) on my comp with details... :)

I'm using Norton Antivirus and have done for a long time, although I think that there probably is a better one out there. It's pretty good with Viruses and my computer doesn't crash or anything but it has made Networking quite a tricky business.

I was using NOD32 trial version. After it timed out, i looked at the tests of the av-comparatives, and decided to try Antivir. (as it had really good results in the tests) And i gotta tell you, while i was using NOD32, i noticed no virus warnings at all, even with very high detection settings, but after a while i installed Antivir, it started to give virus warnings time to time (usually worms). So i think we should reconsider our choices.

I have now switched to NOD32!

and highly recommend it! (Y)

Same here. I switched from ZoneAlarm Security Suite as it was giving me problems. Now I just run Nod 32 with a NAT router and everything works flawlessly. Nod 32 is definitely a great virus scanner and very light on resources. It can be scanning and you will barely notice it at all. Great software.

I'm currently using AVG Free, downloaded the EICAR test file and it... PASSED THROUGH!?! I'm considering switching away, I want something light weight that doesn't hack around Windows (ahem, Norton) and has a decent detection rate. From what Im seeing in the thread its a toss up between Kaspersky and NOD32. Recommendations?

The anti-virus with the highest detection rate of all is G-DATA AntiVirusKit 2007, but it's not free and won't even let you update the definitions without having a valid registration key for it. It uses Kaspersky's and Avast's engines. 2006's version used Kaspersky and BitDefender, but BD was replaced by Avast so that AVK would consume less resources.

In regards to detection rate between Kaspersky and NOD32, Kapersky detects more, but isn't as good on the proactive side as NOD32. NOD32 is rock-solid stable, consumes minimal resources and scans very quickly and thoroughly.

If you go with Kaspersky, do a custom install and deselect everything but the on-demand scanner itself. Kaspersky has cleaned out malware from dozens of systems I've used it on. It's pretty much the only product I personally trust.
