Question

A fresh "Best Antivirus" poll for 2007. Please use this as a reference when researching antivirus utilities. As time goes on, the poll can be updated to add further options.

Due to limitations of IPB - this will be seen as 2 polls. Select the Antivirus program you wish to vote for, and choose N/A in the other poll.

Happy voting!

Poll choices are links to the software pages.

Symantec Antivirus Corporate 10.2 is without a doubt, the best antivirus i've used in my entire life.

I swear it's like it's not even running. More efficient than Norton, AVG, Kaspersky, and NOD32.

I'm afraid you're mistaken sir, about the part that it's more efficient than NOD32.

I've performed a comparative test in a controlled environment using VMware 6 running Windows XP SP2 with the latest updates. The system has been configured such that there are no third-party programs running. All background services (like Automatic Updates and Messenger) had been disabled.

As for the Antivirus programs, they've been installed with the default settings. All modules (Outlook, Office etc) have been enabled.

Here are the test results:

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate v10.1.6.6000 : (Unmanaged Client)

Autostart Modules - 17 modules

Installed Size - 94 MB

Active Processes - 5

Private Mem Usage - 42.8 MB

Minimum Idle CPU usage - 8%

Minimum PF Usage - 142 MB

ESET NOD32 AntiVirus v2.70.32 : (Standard)

Autostart Modules - 5 modules

Installed Size - 28.4 MB

Active Processes - 2

Private Mem Usage - 20.2 MB

Minimum Idle CPU usage - 7%

Minimum PF Usage - 105 MB

I switched to NOD32 a few months back from AVG. Mainly because its renowned for taking less resources. I have come across two problems though.

If I download any archive file (zip, rar, even utorrent.exe is a good example) the system halts for a few seconds as NOD32 seems to scan it. This applies when moving utorrent to different disks.

The second issue is the updater really does steal alot of the CPU. I can play games and suddenly watch them lock up for a few seconds. I know its NOD32 as if I check the updater it shows the time when it updated. I run mine in silent mode also.

The updater isnt an issue really. The archive stuff is annoying though. I've done searches and cant find anyone else with this issue so guess its just local to my system. Anyone else experienced the above?

Mcafee is the best because have best virus definition.I try norton kaspersky and other but after I install mcafee ver 10.0 my pc dont have any problem with virus.

Uhhuh...

Well, anyone who happens to have a broader scope / wider horizon, check out the latest comparison done by AV-Comparatives.org.

Spoiler:

1st place - AntiVir (71%)

2nd place - NOD32 (68%)

3rd place - TrustPort AV Workstation Edition (you've never heard of this one, have you? :p)

I made a account just so I could post this. This is weird but with NOD32 or any new antivirus installed my systems downloads is slow downed greatly. Downloading off newsgroups speeds would leave the file incomplete etc. Uninstalled the same files are fine.

Also with NOD32 my ftp server was not ever working right. Yes I have set them up correctly.

im sticking to my kaspersky 6.0 after all....its when i realised that it had more useful features than the others, picked up a trojan and when i picked all the modules...leaving out email protection--which i dont need....its performing better than NOD32 atm on ma pc...

im lovin the constant virus database updates and clean interface...although i've seen kaspersky 7.0...and the interface looks bloated and horrible!!!

i think kaspersky shud go minimalistic on the interface and keep things clean,, to help conserve resource usage and keep it efficient!

Nod32.

I have to say, we had NOD32 where we used to work, and the guys there didn't know much about computer safety, so it often found viruses, HOWEVER, it would never ever find one it could remove!

It always said, Nod32 has found a virus, would you like to (greyed out) delete it (greyed out) quarantine it or (available) continue!

Thanks alot!

Avast deals with everything it finds, and often finds it before it gets onto the sytems thanks to the brilliant web scanner. And its free!

    • ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE keyboard is 27% off on Amazon by Ivan Jenic The ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE is currently $159.99 on Amazon, down from $219.99. That's 27% off and $60 saved on a keyboard that combines retro and modern design, while being one of the most responsive and adaptable 75% boards available right now (purchase link down below). The ROG Falchion Ace comes with the HFX V2X magnetic switches that allow you to set actuation anywhere between 0.1mm and 3.5mm with 0.01mm fine-tuning steps. It also comes with Rapid Trigger, a feature that resets the key the moment you release it rather than waiting for a fixed reset point, which makes a noticeable difference in fast-paced games. And finally, an 8,000Hz polling rate should make the response time feel instant. The build quality is decent, with dense plastic and powder-coated aluminum, which is expected from a keyboard at this price point. There’s also the onboard adjustment wheel, which lets you tweak actuation and Rapid Trigger sensitivity without opening any software. For competitive gaming, the ROG Falchion Ace is hard to beat at this price. And those who appreciate old-school hardware, especially those white keyboards we’ve all grown up with, will likely also appreciate the looks of this keyboard. A carry case is included.
