SyncBackSE doesn't seem to be on the list, I use this all the time for incremental backups and folder synchronisation. Has saved me a couple of times now for getting back stuff I have lost.

Totally agree, SyncBackSE is amazing, you have to check it out to really understand how flexible that program is. (Y)

Depends on what you mean by 'backup'. If you mean image creation then nothing more than ghost is really needed. If you mean file backup then for home windows backup is fine and Tivoli/Veritas is fine for work depending on budget. Add that on top of volume shadow and you should be aces for most circumstances

hello all,

it seems acronis is the most popular, but it is too much for my needs.

can someone recommend programs that schedule, can backup open files while logged in on non administrator accounts (most important), filter files, and is easy to setup.

thanks for any help

I use TrueImage my self, but haven't tried many of the other poll options so I can't really compare.

Whatever solution I use, I'd only use the bootable CD and make complete/incremental backups.

As for installing the software in Windows, I don't bother.

What about for servers? I'm looking for a backup solution that's easy and cheap for Windows 2003 SBS. I'm currently using Windows Backup to an external device but I want something a bit more comprehensive.

FileBack PC recognizes external devices, and is capable to start automatically a backup task at media insertion.

will just say, i have recently purchased acronis true image after putting up with a mix of batch and zip files for many years.

i'm truely surprised at the speed at which true image will backup your entire system with only a slight impact on performance - you can leave it doing it in the background and still surf with minimal slow down. the compression and incremental/differential technology is good too, it seems to work very well.

the interface might be a bit confusing for beginners but overall it's very good, very robust and definitely a tool everybody should have in their arsenal.

Over the years I have used just about every commercial backup program on the market and while Acronis true image is very good I always return to Norton Ghost. Norton Ghost, now up to v.10, has been the only software to do silent backups and restores with as little intervention and repercussions as possible. Although v10. has become a bit more difficult to learn than the older versions it is very powerful and I think the best option for anyone who wants to do backups or clones.

Just my 2 cents...

www.mozy.com

This is the best free backup (2GB) service I had ever tried. All you have to do is to configure one time and Mozy will backup all your data automatically. One great advantage is, Mozy will scan and backup all new and modified data.

Retriving the data is also very very simple. If you are retriving one or two files, you get it almost immediately - this feature can be particularly useful if you realized you had forgotten to bring your thumbdrive out.

If you decided to sign-up, you can enter '[email protected]' as your referrer. By keying in my email address as your referrer, you get another 256MB of storage space. Thus, you have 2.2GB to store your documents.

I strongly recommend you to use this free service.

So far Acronis is very good. Ability to restore to different hardware, bootable media, and its very easy to use.

Question: How do I exclude files/folders when creating an image? I don't need to backup mp3, movies... it just makes the image so much bigger. Can I exclude files/folders with ability to restore windows? I know it can backup files folders, but will it restore windows?

    • Not such a great deal, Ultimate, which gives you full 5080 features is $181.99 CAD per month, that's $2183.88 per year, I can buy the 5080 for $1809.99 CAD, then it goes up to $279.99 per month after the first billing cycle. Typical cloud rental, costs more than buying the hardware.
