Question

A fresh "Best Firewall" poll for 2007. Please use this as a reference when researching Firewall utilities. As time goes on, the poll can be updated to add further options.

Due to limitations of IPB - this will be seen as 3 polls. Select the Firewall program you wish to vote for, and choose N/A in the other polls.

Happy voting!

I use AVG Antivirus with firewall, it is full compatible with Windows Vista. I have no problems.

Well I am actualy using ZA Free but it's memory footprint is huge and I have narrowed down some of my lag spikes to it. Now I just want to see if anyone else plays online games and what they suggest.

I am looking at either Commodo or Sunbelt Kerio. Not sure which is better for gaming.

I've been using Comodo on my XP install that I use for gaming with no problems whatsoever. It works well and uses little memory. I need to find a firewall for Vista though....

Can you tell me what processes are in memory while it's running and the sizes?

Thanks,

First a word of warning. If you are a user of NOD32 Anti-Virus and want to try the Comodo firewall DO NOT set the firewall to block all outgoing traffic while booting. Comodo sets it's boot priority to high and then NOD32 attempts to call home as soon as it loads and locks up the whole system. Just an FYI.

As for Comodo itself, I am trying it in place of ZA Free. First because I have read many of the dreaded "Zone Alarm slows down all online gaming" and I found the fact that it installs it's own Spam filter into Outlook annoying. With that said I see no difference in gaming speed (lag) with Comodo than with ZA Free. Comodo is WAY more configurable and in time I may get used to it but I somehow felt more secure with ZA.... *shrug*

All I need is a firewall that will stop and tell me about any traffic in or out and learn from my response. I don't want any program "calling home" without my permission as this can just lead to problems. Both firewalls seem to do this very well.

With this in mind, what would the advantages be of me say upgrading to ZA Pro or even ZA Security suite. I have a brand new copy of Norton Internet Security 2007 sitting here that I got from a conference. Is it not advisable to try it? Keep in mind I have a P4 3.0g with 2g dual channel DDR and play games.

SO thanks for any further advice and let me know if you need more specs for your opinions.

Cheers.

I tested several and between ZoneAlarm Free and Comodo, ZoneAlarm did in fact cause more lag in my online games but Comodo kept giving me the same popups time after time even if I said to remember my selection. But I guess for gaming unless there is another that comes along that is as small and unintrusive I will have to go with Comodo.

god when i had winxp i use zone alarm security suite. best security provided by any software hands down. true it slowed my sytem down but onyl very little and trust me my system had some weak specifications. now with vista i just uninstalled norton 360 which screwed up my pc after i did that. did a fresh install and am only using vista's built in firewall with nod32 antivirus. nice loooww memory footprint. and nod32's speed, efficiency, footprint, detection is unmatchable.

Sygate PF should be there... it's still fully funtional and protecting very well. I've been using it for several years, and it has always kept me safe and stealthed. :) I'm still using it, even I recently bought a router-modem with firewall.

I also have tried many different popular software walls, but none of them didn't satisfy me like Sygate does. :D

I've understood, that the Kerio is follower for the Sygate?

Personally the Best firewall out is a Hardware firewall, no holes no exploites and you can monitor it perfectly and you have more control over software firewalls Software firewalls are useless in my opinion where's the options to block network traffic? where's the option to define IP Access over your router.

Hardware Firewall for a Network

Software firewall if you just surf now and again

Hardware firewalls let outbound traffic through... So if you manage to get a trojan which wants to dial his home - nothing will be stopping it... right?

And besides that, the other reason why I use "double firewall" is that I don't want the unnecessary windows applications and services connecting over the world to other ip addresses. With Sygate, all of those can be easily blocked/allowed.

    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
    • Now disable that stupid OneDrive backup request when Windows starts please. So unbelievably frustrating to only have “remind me later” instead of “no and never ask me again”
    • Hello, The Media Creation Tool is still at v10.0.26100.7019 from October 2025. Just looks like the backend has been updated. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Since they open sourced the calculator in Win 10/11 it is much better and can do a lot, I love it.
    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
