Wii Games Supporting 480p

Recommended Posts

I thought i would give this link as i have not seen it yet. For those that have HDTVs or TV supporting progressive scan, You get much better image quality with most games they support it. (You need the Wii component cables to achieve 480p)

HDTV Arcade's list is not as extensive as the one above.

There's a big mistake on both those lists. Trauma Center is not 480p, but does have 16:9 support. I know this from playing it, since my television tells me the signal (480i, 480p, etc). And also it outputs to 16:9 with no issue whatsoever (nor any stretching).

*Nevermind. From my time playing it I never noticed that it was actually stretched and not natively supporting 16:9. However, everytime I play the game it switches to 480i from 480p.. So if others are managing to get 480p, I have no idea why I'm not. Other games have no trouble with 480p, such as Zelda/Excite Truck/Wii Sports.

I wonder about this because red steel says it supports 480p and 16:9 but it sure don't look like it on my TV. And there is a small boarder on the sides. But Zelda looks great and so does wii sports. I think some games may say 480p but they did not do it very well for that particular game. Metroid Prime for GC looks amazing on the Wii in 480p, but resident evil 4 fir GC looks terrible (it says it supports 480p, does not look like it.) It may also be the TV. I have a 52" 16:9 RCA HDTV, i think its an older one because it supports 480p and 1080i and thats it. No 720p. And there is massive underscan on the HD resolutions.

Resident Evil 4 never says it supports 480p (I have it and the box doesn't say anything).

You might be confusing the PS2 version, because it DOES support 480p (and widescreen), but the actual graphics are less impressive.

I looked it on several sites (Nintendo.com had no information) as there are many games that don't say it on the box but support 480p. Rogue Squadron (the first one for GC) is a good example. Several sites listed RE 4 as 16:9 and 480p compatible. I really don't know for sure. Like you said, it dont mean it looks better.

I was actually a bit incorrect. RE4 for the Gamecube does support 480p, however it does not support 16:9. It's actually odd because the game purposely appears in a "widescreen" format even on 4:3 televisions, however there is no option for widescreen 16:9, so you simply get the same image (with black on the top/bottom) stretched on a widescreen set.

Btw I tested all of this on my Wii and television (with component cables attached).

do GameCube games that support 480p work at 480p on the Wii?

if so, how do you switch them to 480p mode?

i know in games like Tekken 5 or Guitar Hero II, you just go to Options and change it. but in games like Soul Calibur 3, you have to hold down certain buttons during startup.

I'll use Smash Brothers Melee as an example.

When you start Melee in a Wii with component cables, it asks you if you want to enable progressive scan. You hit Yes, the screen flickers, and 480p becomes enabled. Melee on a CameCube you have to hold B on startup for it to ask you, but on the Wii it asks you when you first turn it on.

Melee is also only 4:3 no matter what format it comes in (480i or 480p). However, 480p looks good enough stretched out to 16:9 to my eyes. 480i stretched out just looks bad.

    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
