PNWDweller
Don't really know if this is true or not as I haven't tried it, but I read somewhere a long time ago in the news paper (Before the internet - gasp!), that if you can't get to sleep, place a half cut onion in a jar and cover it up with plastic wrap for a few minutes, then remove it and take several deep whifs of the onion smell. It makes your eyes burn and water, but also supposedly helps induce sleep.

naap51stang
Benadryl usually works for me for the "quick" fix to sleep. For long term, I try to take 6mg of Melatonin about an hour before bed, and trying to get to bed at the same time every night. For college age people, I doubt that would do you any good. For us "antiques" over 40, the body starts dropping off Melatonin output, which is suppose to regulate the sleep/wake cycle or something like that. I just know that it works for me. Another thing I found out is that cutting off the intake of caffine by 4pm helps.

Laurë Veteran Posted January 9, 2007 Veteran Share Posted January 9, 2007 They did invent Nyquil for a reason Don't sleeping tablets make you groggy the next day? Or have they got over that now. I'd go for the joint personally, as a one off.

Guest
Taking stimulants 1, or 6 hours for regular users before sleeping is known as bad sleep hygiene. It is also one thing that can cause insomnia. Have a read on the sleep hygiene. If you change to have good sleep hygiene then you should sleep better. Laurë Veteran Posted January 10, 2007 Veteran Share Posted January 10, 2007 A pint of vodka?! Alcohol interferes with sleep, it's a bad idea. Also, it is highly addictive so it's certainly not a good choice as a "medicinal". I just remembered how quickly boring books send me to sleep. ZonoBurk
Just about any kind of antihistamine (Benadryl, NyQuil) can make you sleepy. Plus I assume they're pretty safe for long periods of time, and can be purchased over-the-counter. They also have over-the-counter sleeping aids, which contain antihistamine. That's what I started with. Now - I take a prescription which is alprazolam (Xanax) for anxiety which side effect is drowsiness. I also sometimes take muscle relaxer (Flexeril, Zanaflex). However, you made not want to go that far. ;) As Persephone mentioned, some "sleepy medicine" can/will make you groggy the next day (hangover). Oh yes, cannabis is sometimes good for sleeping. I know many people that smoke at least a joint before they go to bed every night. I personally only smoke it at least twice a year, but I never had a "hangover" from it. I actually felt pretty good the next day. :) Edited January 10, 2007 by MchWalte
